Been hearing about this one for years, not sure why I resisted reading it...hell it's awesome. Plus it is ripe with Ohio/Columbus references throughout..including a special extensive tribute to Middletown, Ohio of all places! It's filled with a massive amount of great 80's references, and is about to be a big time movie directed by Spielberg.

Read it now if you haven't already, then you will likely be pretty pumped for the upcoming movie.

Currently reading the classic 1884 book for "outers", Woodcraft by the mononymic Nessmuk (aka George W. Sears).

Great line from one of the early chapters: "We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it."

I read this book last week:

It's not your typical athlete autobiography story. There is a little about his playing at FSU and the NFL, but it is mainly about his dealing wioth his mother's death and his struggles with life:
a. it's oldest son of single mother (who has 6 kids, different fathers, never been married, is a police officer in Baton Rouge, works extra to makes ends meet, could never afford to buy a house, gets killed (i.e. ambushed) while on special duty),
b. his father takes zero interest in him and he's envious that some of the fathers of brothers/sisters are involved in their lives,
c. becomes guardian to 5 siblings, goes off to FSU on a scholarship, siblings live with grandma and have problems, moves youngest 3 to Tallahassee with him, one doesn't speak to him for 6 months,
d. next youngest brother is mad that he went to Florida, etc. instead of staying in LA (go to LSU) so he could help out.
e. wants to meet mother's killers who are death row and ask them why, etc., when he does the murder claims he's innocent.
f. goes to the NFL (Tampa bay and then Atlanta) and gains over 10,000 yards rushing,
g. has a "mother fixation" and can't get into a relationship with any girl/woman, gets help from a psychiatrist,
h. starts charity to help poor single mothers (like his mother) buy a house.
