Both were really enjoyable reads. Good plots, interesting concepts. I expect Christopher Nolan could have a blast turning these into movies.

Oof. This was not nearly as much fun. So well written but so awfully painful. I had high expectations for this and was not disappointed.

Something a little bit lighter after a story set in war-torn Afghanistan. It's really quite silly. I can't say I loved it, though.

And then back to the depressing stuff. A really interesting retelling of the story of Achilles -- while it was really good, it was not as captivating as I expected it to be. Everything I read about it suggested it was one of the saddest books people have read and I just never got there with it.

With all of the wacky events of the past few years, this has been an interesting time of transition (and the fun may have just begun!). Transition brings upon many new innovations, and with innovation there's tons of hype, hysteria, and scams. So it seems appropriate to revisit this classic right now.

In particular, I find the whole phenomena around Crypto-currency interesting. Not so much that I think Crypto is the next big thing (it could be), but how many parallels there are to the mining boom of the 1800's. Even much of the jargon around Crypto (e.g. "mining" crypto) comes from gold/silver mining lexicon. As well as while there are probably legit coins that will help certain individuals get rich, like the mining boom of the 1800's, there are likely more scams and bullshit out there.

And this book covers many great schemes and crazy over-hyped commodities from the past, perhaps bearing lessons for similar circumstances that could come in the future.

Just finished the Dexter series. The books probably ended better, but overall the show was much better. The books ran into some of the same problems the show did.

Dexter says for most of the books how much he liked kids. Especially Cody and Astor. He specifically targets people who do bad things to kids. Then he has a daughter and the entire book is dedicated to him wanting to stop killing people and stop being a monster because of his daughter, and he's finally having feelings because of his daughter. And then in the final 2 books he's like "fuck them kids. I'm out"

It's also a bit repetitive. There's a bad/crooked cop who suspects he's involved with killings, his kids get kidnapped, the bad/crooked cop ends up dead and he gets the kids back.
