  • One day soon, definitive proof came out that there is no heaven, hell, or afterlife.

Would the world immediately turn into anarchy?

Would those of you who consider yourself religious start engaging in behavior that your formal religious self would not have?

You don't reach heaven or get 'eternal life ' through obeidience or doing good works. Eternal life is a gift of 'Grace " from God. If God does not exist and we base the world on science alone. Then Gays are abnormal, alcoholics are abnormal and why spend any time worrying about them. Survival of the fittest...Consicence would not exist...Morality would not exist.

*Not being a dick with this response*
Non sequitur. Proof of the metaphysical is next to impossible if not absolutely impossible.

In my personal experience, "no" on both accounts.
I left the church, consider myself "agnostic" by the most direct application of the term, and find that I respect the varying aspects of all of humanities whims much more now.
As for what I engage in, that hasn't really changed much. I just have less anxiety about the potentialities even when I just think about out-of-my-former-box shit.

Other than that I would continue to be who I am because I would still believe that how I treat people is my greatest legacy. (other than my life insurance policy)
Kind of like the golden rule right. Treat others like you want to be treated....

Personally, I kind of relate to REM and "Losing My Religion". I still believe, but I don't know what that means to me at this point....

my first take on this is to agree with the person who mentioned that these things would be virtually impossible to disprove. but I like playing the what if game so.... the world would not immediately turn to anarchy. though very large sections of the globe certainly would. looking at you middle east and Africa. while I think all first world countries (us included) would without question see a decent amount of lawlessness as a result. I personally don't believe the average American relies on religions existence as the supreme foundation of their day to day lives.

while it is certainly true that many of our laws and customs, either directly or indirectly, trace back to religious sources. shooting people in the face doesn't stop being "bad" if religion is a hoax.

will a lot of people have serious questions about things they considered "taboo" prior? absolutely. but outside of prostitutes getting far more popular (or at least more mainstream) not much would change in the long term in a negative sense.

to sum up, short term would be pretty messy with a decent amount of lawlessness everywhere. but the super messy stuff would largely be restricted to the countries that are already super messy. long term life would settle back to being pretty close to where it is today. only with fewer "my imaginary friend can beat up your imaginary friend" arguments outside of persons 4 years old and younger.

Consicence would not exist...Morality would not exist.

so..... agnostics don't have a conscience or morals..? from a legal point of view wouldn't that technically mean they wouldn't understand right or wrong the way the average person would be expected to? in such a case I would suspect they would fall outside the realm of being held legally responsible for their actions....

hey dragon, wanna make a couple bucks? =D

based on the above... I would have to assume you currently can not be held legally responsible for any of your actions as you seem to have no conscience or morals... though I admittedly am not a lawyer and neglected to stay at a holiday in express last night :(. so with that said.... I have a piece of paper with a bunch of names on it. see, its not that I want them dead.... its that... I don't want them to be alive... anymore....

For all the crap religions get for violence atheists have been responsible for many more deaths. Hitler Mao and Stalin for 3.

    interesting response...

atheist definition - a person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods.

my understanding of hitler is that he was definitely NOT an atheist. can't say I know as much about mao or stalin. but I would be surprised to hear that either were truly atheist in their beliefs...
