Whats next for Notre Dame

If they want BCS bowls they should hire John Cooper! Sure he is old and hasn't coached in years...but he must already know a lot about Notre Dame, because that was the only team he could dominate in a big game. lol. Just make sure you are really satisfied with 9-2 seasons with loses to USC and scUM. Don't expect to win many of those BCS bowls either.

From what I remember, the press talked about Gruden. I don't think anybody seriously thought that was realistic. Then Stoops was another that was talked about because he was an Ohio guy. I don't know how serious that was either though. He had just won a Nat'l Championship at OU. I remember talk of the Oregon Ducks coach (can't remember his name damnit!). Then Tressel. I don't know if any of these guys were approached officially other than Tressel though. Others may know more about it than I do. Being a Y-Towner, Tressel was always my first choice with Stoops being second because he is a Y-Towner as well.
I think the main discussion at OSU was Glen Mason or Jim Tressel. Stoops was out early and was in a really good position (player and pay-wise) at OK and OSU was a problem child that had players with a bad attitude getting their asses kicked by a vertically-challenged Ohioan playing for SC. The press did try to make it look like Geiger couldn't get anyone to sign on, which is why I was urging we be a bit reserved. LOTS of coaches would still kill to coach at ND and someone always thinks HE'S the guy who can fix it.

If anyone got egg on their face during our last search, it was Mason and that was unfortunate because he is a good guy. But, as ND once again shows, never count your chickens before the eggs hatch! Also, remember, there are a few ugly ducklings in the world!

Let's see what I remember from our search.

Gruden was pretty much just a big rumor and a pipe dream. There was even one ru,pr he was on a plane to Columbus, but he had never left CA.

Stoops was also just a short term rumor because he wasn't going anywhere.

Walt Harris said he was not interested early, but I am not sure if anyone even contacted him.

Belotti (Oregon) came in for an interview and was considered serious, but I think his lack of knowledge of even the michigan rivalry hurt him.

Mason was a serious candidate and really stuck his neck out for the job, but did not get it.

Tressel was my choice once I learned more about him. He was a Buckeye, son of a coach, had coached at OSU, played college ball, won multiple national championships at YSU and seemed to address the off-field character issues. I figured he would ultimately lose to Mason, but AG once again landed the right man.

ND will end up with a decent coach, but it just won't be their first choice. I am curious if Weiss will wait to see what happens at the pro level before doing anything with ND.
