The answer to the poster's question, "When was the last time we beat an undefeated/top-20 team on the road?" looks like ND in 1996.

2001 scUM was ranked, but not undefeated.

These are our road victories over teams ranked in the AP poll in the last 9 1/2 seasons. They are in historical order, and exclude neutral-site bowl games. If somebody was ranked in the Coaches poll, but not in the AP poll when we played them, I haven't listed that since I only looked at the AP poll.

N.D. was 3-0 and #5 (AP, tOSU was #4) when we beat them in South Bend in 1996.

Iowa was a 5-1 #20 (AP) team when we beat them in Kinnick in 1996.

Michigan St. was a 5-2 #21 (AP) team when we beat them in East Lansing in 1997.

West Virginia was #11 in the preseason poll when we nailed them at Morgantown in the 1998 opener (a 0-0 record is technically undefeated).

Minnesota was a 5-1 #24 (AP) team when we beat them in the Giant Baggie in 1999.

Wisconsin was a 3-2 #24 (AP) team when we beat them in Camp Randall in 2000.

scUM was 11th (AP) when we nailed them in the Pig House in 2001, but they weren't undefeated like the poster is asking. That was their traditional 3rd loss in 2001.

N.C. State was a 1-0 unranked team when we beat them in Raleigh in 2004. They had only beaten Richmond, and would have been #29 if the ranking went that far. So they were not ranked when we played them.
