that's true, I should have said it better. there has been nobody even close to jackson since he played... other than redd, and I'm not sure he compares. Which is why I heard so much about him even tho I never saw him play (hopefully there will be some espn classics as our program continues to rise)

I wasn't trying to vault him above Hav and Lucas.

I was at an OSU game JJ's Freshman year vs Louisville and "the 'Ville" as my high school phys-ed teacher like to call them, were ranked that year (they had Felton Spencer and a guard named LaBradford Smith?, I believe). OSU was down big at half, maybe 15 or 16. But then the super sophs (Mark Baker, Chris Jent, Jamal Brown) along with Jimmy Jackson just caught fire, hitting threes, second chance put-backs. The game came down to Jamal Brown on the foul line, needing one more shot to tie the game up with just seconds remaining. He missed...but Jimmy Jackson came flying through the lane as the ball was just falling off the rim to tip back the game winning bucket. It was one of the most fantastic games I've ever seen.

Then two years later I was at the OSU vs. Indiana double o.t. win where freaking Damon Baily was unstopable, but so was Jimmy Jackson. And in the final seconds of the second overtime of a tied up game as JJ drove the lane and all 5 Hoosiers seemingly converged on him a beautiful dish to Treg Lee standing @ the "around the world" 1st position gave an easy (but still nerve racking) bunny shot to win.

What a team! Find replays of this team and Jimmy Jackson, SNG77. It will be well worth you while. They were a thing of beauty.

My brother was a manager for the team during those years. He's shown all throughout the game that the scUM 5 beat OSU in the tourney to the Final Four that year.

Scoonie Penn was just as important to those teams as Redd...Ken Johnson was as well but didn't receive as much love.

I was a bigger penn fan than redd, but in terms of national recognition, redd was the man (especially due to his NBA career). Actually, people should call Oden the best shot blocker since Johnson :p It just wasn't fair how long that man's arms were.

I knew two people in michigan who idolized jackson growing up, and continued to do so during their HS bball career. It was those guys that turned me into a serious OSU bball fan.

Have that game on VHS somewhere. Damon Bailey had to be the biggest whiner in college BB since magic johnson I could not stand him. He got every ticky tack foul all the time.

The thing that made JJ great was that at the end of the game, you'd think he only scored about 6-8 points, but he'd really have 25. He just made everything look so effortless out there, and it seemed like he was always trying to pass the ball and involve his teammates. What a great Buckeye.

You're absolutely right about J.J. looking to pass alot and getting his teammates involved. Even though he lead the Bucks in scoring in all three seasons he played he ended up 8th in career assists! That's SICK! since #1, he was a shooting guard / small forward, and #2, he only played until his Junior year (only 3 years to get to 8th all time in assists!) before leaving for the NBA.

Also incredibly impressive to me is that Jimmy was the team scoring leader all three years he played (yes, even as a Freshman), but still owns a career shooting % of over 51%. This man was not one of those "rock and fire" the ball up 40 or 50 times a game to get his 20-30 pts. He was incredibly efficient. 51% for a guard is awesome, and he did this even as a Freshman.

This guy is a true tOSU all-time great.

You're losing me here.

Redd wasn't even close to JJ while at OSU. He's gotten better since he left.

Personally, I thought Penn got more pub than Michael Redd while at OSU.

I saw Jimmy Jackson play in HS when they played Zanesville in the regionals and the guy dominated, I mean granted he was able to take about 3 steps on every drive w/o being called for travelling but still was a man amongst boys.

You guys are forgetting about Jay Burson as well.

I never could forget about Jay. He is the first player that really turned me into a Buckeye basketball fan (college basketball as well actually). That guy was pure "heart". What incredible effort he gave. That was the Buckeye team my dad first took me to see.

But as far as my personal favorite, Jimmy Jackson is it by far...not comparing him in terms of any of the other Buckeye greats, just as my all time favorite. Though I'm sure no one would argue that J.J. is easily one of the top 10 best Buckeye baskeballers if not top 5.
