Which CB Will Replace Fox?

Hodge...Fox did make some great plays in that game. As did every Buckeye defender. Sick or not he still was the weakest link in the secondary that year. Teams picked on him a lot on purpose. And you know what??? He still did one heck of a job! As I said...the weakest link on the 2002 Buckeye secondary isn't saying much. It was one hell of a defense that held some of the best offenses to season low point totals. My point was that at one point he was picked on a lot...and some fans began to not like the play of Fox so much because of it. But to start as a Sophomore on that defense says a lot. I tried to take that and show how he has become a great corner. But the fact does remain that I don't think we lost much...not because of how bad Fox is...because I think Fox is one of the best DBs in the big-10...but because of how good I think Ginn and Youboty can be. When you have a football team where if a star player goes down, you know that you won't lose a step, then you know you truely have a great team. I think that is what the Buckeyes have. You can thank the coaching staff and recruiting efforts for that. Please don't take this as a knock on Fox, but instead realize that I am just trying to say that Ohio State has been and still is full of defensive secondary talent as good as Fox...which is DAMN good!

I couldn't agree more! Only problem that I really see is that it is very young and unproven talent. Having Fox on the other corner to stabilize E.J. as a first year starter was key. Now we have two brand new starters on the corners, 3 on the defensve line, 2 in the linebacking corps and a safety. That is a LOT of new blood, and I just would've felt better having Fox to stabilize the DB's kinda like Hawk and Fraser do for their units. In my opinion, as long as their confidence doesn't get shaken, this could be better for OSU in the long run. Right now, however, it cannot bode well for our defense to lose our most veteren player right before the first away game...against a team that is known for spreading the field. It takes us one DB deeper.

I could just be paranoid though.

Exactly! This game is the key to the Fox situation. I've got my fingers crossed and I believe in these guys. I wish I could be there to root them on at the top of my lungs. Instead I'll be in front of the TV still screaming at the top of my lungs. Am I the only one who does that when I'm not actually at the game? When it's 3rd down I'm standing up and screaming at the TV like I would at a game. I think I'm just nuts. Go Ashton! Go Teddy! Go E.J.! and GO BUCKS!!!!!

I do the exact same thing! I get so pumped! If we get through this game, I think the younger DB's will mature quicker and when Fox comes back we only get deeper. Lets hope all goes well...I'm nervous.

Besides, if you think that he's not very good at covering the opposition why do you want to use him to play CB/nickelback in spread attacks or in passing situation.

First off very good post, I appreciate you sticking to the issue at hand. Usually we have a safety play nickel back anyway. Usually that is to help out on tackling. If a safety plays the soft coverage that he tends to play, I really don't have a problem with it. It is smart. Doss wasn't very good at coverage, but he was a safety so it is easier to forgive. IMHO Fox would be better than most safeties because he has worked so much at his technique and has been focused on it for two plus years.

So... what about the 2 years prior... when Fox STILL started? Too loyal to his Sophs, too? I don't think he's out do damage himself by starting inferior players like Fox.

No but at the time he was our best option. His coverage is better than Cie Grant's was, that is for sure. Cie did what I thought Fox should have done. Fill a void, as the next best option, until someone better comes along then move to the position you were made to play. In Fox's case that is safety. If he plays in the NFL that is where they will want him.

as we're discussing Killers football knowledge

Congratulations, but it is a long season, Steve McNair let me down big time, Keenan McCardell still is sitting home, and Baltimore's Defense 3 points? That is not going to happen that often. Just a bad week, I'll be back.

Johnathan XC very good post, hard to pick out anything you said there to respond to other than I disagree with you Fox Assesment from last season, and I feel that Nate Salley is by far the strongest member of our secondary. I think Fox At CB is our weakest, but at safety he would eliminate our other biggest weakness and make it a strength. The most honest opinion I have heard yet, and I am glad you don't have your blinders on. I don't agree, but I see your statements as at least having some sort of fairness behind them.

Since Fox sucks so bad, I expect Parcells and every other "expert" in the NFL to leave him undrafted.

No I really do think they will draft him, to play safety. It isn't like I am saying he doesn't have any talent, if you will go back and read I have given him all sorts of complements, some people can't seem to see the forest because of all the trees?

Also...lay off of Grad

I wasn't looking for one that is for sure. Better to stop there.

I doubt KillerNut is black

I hate to continue to have to say this but, Milliani you are right I am a white guy, I am not even a white guy who tries to "act black". Also I haven't watch BET since Rap City used to be on when I was 16/17. Every once in a while I will check out a black college football game however, I think that is on there.

I PM'd Mili about that post...Killer and I may disagree severely but I cannot agree with those types of statements. Discussing football should not bring out those types of emotions

Thanks I guess.

Hopefully now this thread will work its way away from me, and focus on the good discussion that JohnathanXC and Oiler have started.

fox didn't get picked on early in his career because of skill level, it was because he was inexperenced, second alot of schemes we run on defense dictates that a qb throws to the side the blitz is coming from and since fox played boundary corner and we stunt and blitz from the boundary alot your cb has to make sure he doesn't get burnt deep 1st, second make sure tackles in open field.

Is Fox Springs or Winfield. NO. Is he an All Big Ten Corner, 3 yr starter, captain, owner of a national champsionship..., YES. In no way does losing him help our defense. Yes we are deep and the experience the youngins get will be great. But if Carpenter went down we wouldnt say that putting in Freeman will improve our defense. If Hall goes down, putting in Ginn full time wouldnt improve our offense. Just because you have depth doesnt mean it improves your squad when you lose someone. It is just a blessing. Fox wasnt gonna win the Thorpe but he wasnt gonna hurt our YOUNG defense either. Getting younger will not help us right now.

I also dont get all the bashing of Fox. He isnt the same player who got picked on as a soph. But then again who do u pick on that year, Gamble or Doss, please. It wasnt because he wasnt good, it was just because everyone else was great. I cant wait to get him back.

I've never put anybody on my ignore list, but after this thread Killernut may have leapt past Tibor and NDChief as nominees for that list.

I think that we all agree that Youbouty will be manning one corner spot next season.

Who will the other one be? Will it be Ginn? He has proven that he's an offensive weapon and he needs to have the ball in his hands 10 times a game.

Can he be a shut down corner while playing significantly on offense as well? I don't know.

Underwood has not gotten it done, unfortunately. So if Ginn isn't going to be the mainstay at the other corner, who will be?

I think Youbouty will slide over to Fox's spot. I think EJ is in the dog house and will get passed by (What do you have to do to get your number pulled midseason?). Personally if Ginn is as good of a CB as people say he is I would like to see him be a shutdown corner and 3rd or 4th WR. If not Ginn I would look for one of the other youngins to take over the spot.
