Ok, My mom and I are planning on getting my dad a tablet for Christmas, my mom has the Ipad 2, and he loves to play with it.

Mainly he's just gonna use it to read books, surf web play apps, the basics. Ipad is out of the question since my mom already has has one, and no point in having 2 in the same house.

We were looking at the Kindle Fire HD ($50 off today only) but I got to thinking, if he doesn't get amazon prime and use the kindle library seems no point in getting that if I can find a tablet that's better and same or cheaper price

I'm not too familiar with tablets out there as I just stick to phones. Basically the max I'll spend is $250

the Kindle Fire HD would be good
or
Nexus 7 - 16GB $199 ... however if he's use to the Ipad & Apple environment I wouldn't mess with that karma

I'm getting a Nexus 7 for xmas ... already have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (which if i had paid for would be used for target practice).

I don't think you'll go wrong with either a Nexus 7 or the Fire HD... only thing i don't like about the Fire is with most highly customized android devices.. updates take a while, where as the Nexus 7 is pure android so will receive updates the quickest.

yea, and I also read with the Fire, you don't have access to the google play store?

I believe this is correct, in that Amazon has set the Fire up as an Amazon shop ... however

xda is a wonderful place for people who try to close down androids open garden :)

The Nexus 7 is the first truly worthy competitor to the iPad, and is superior in some areas. The fire is playing catchup and proprietary app access is pretty weak sauce.

The previous kindle fire was the tablet equivalent of a NetBook. It was cheap, had enough functionality but wasn't a complete device. the only thing it had going for it was price, an advantage it no longer enjoys thanks to the nexus tablet.

Personally I prefer a larger screen like the nexus 10 or iPad but many people love the portability and one hand usage.

I can't think of a compelling reason to get a fire over a nexus tablet.

What's the price range on the nexus line? Looking to get my baby mamma's eleven yr old a tablet. We were gonna go wit dat fire, but if the Nexus is similar in price...fuck it.

Also, can I purchase the nexus offline? Not trusting a warehouse and the usps this close to xmas.

Nexus 10 starts at $399 ... Walmart has them but they don't get very many in stock at a time.

just bought the nexus 7 at office depot today for my dad, saves money on shipping since I was about to buy it online, was surprised they had some

read may not be all that great for reading books, but whatevs, I'd rather get him a product overall tablet for a good price than spend $50 more for a bigger screen but worse tablet

Before:

$199 - Nexus 7 Tablet w/ 8 gb ... at first it came w/ $30 google play credit
$249 - Nexus 7 Tablet w/ 16 gb

Now:

$199 - Nexus 7 Tablet w/ 16 gb
$249 - Nexus 7 Tablet w/ 32 gb

Search slickdeals for nexus 7

- Many recent 32GB deals for around $230

- Some recent 16gb deals for around $165

Nexus 10 is the iPad competition. Nexus 7 is the iPad mini & Kindle fire competition.
