Who had the biggest impact on 2002 season

Who was the main reason the Buckeyes won in 2002?

To me, when you say "Who" had the biggest impact, that implies one person. That would have to me Coach Tressel. He set the groundwork for the 2002 NC in the previous season, with his recruiting, his building of team camaraderie, his calm yet confident sideline demeanor...everything. While I'd pick Krenzel as the offensive MVP (barely, over Clarett) and Smith as defensive MVP (barely, over Wilhelm), there's no doubt in my mind that it was Tressel who instilled that "little extra" in every player which got them over the hump.

BUT the true answer is it is a team game, teams win championships...
I agree.. the OSU TEAM won that championship. Not Tressel or Krenzel or Doss or Wilhelm. But that just seems like a sneaky way to dodge the question. Like Mili said, "who" implies one person. At least, that's the way I understand the spirit of the question.

what/who did we have in 02 (NC year) that we didn't in '03 (11-2)? and you should get your answers.

MoC?
Doss?
Home game w/ SCum
Gamble?

I think coaching always plays a big role in Championship teams. So, I'm not gonna count the coaches into this answer.. cuz they are automatic. Entire team who won is in there too. but if I have to choose one player then I'd pick MoC. We missed him in 03. I am not saying MoC was that great. Any other good RB would have been enough too.

Gamble?
Gamble was there in '03. He left after the K-State Fiesta Bowl game.

And according to your logic, if the games were played 10 times, or 100 times, or an infinite number of times, 2002 Ohio State ALWAYS beats 2002 Michigan, because the players are always the same. 2002 Ohio State ALWAYS beats 2002 Wisconsin, and 2002 Miami, and 2002 Purdue. And 2003 Michigan ALWAYS beats 2003 Ohio State. All because the players are the same.

I think the games are more than just the players/coaches involved. The differences between 2002 Ohio State (14-0) and 2003 Ohio State (11-2) are more than Doss, Nickey, Wilhelm, Vance, etc.

I am not even gonna argue that.

What? I don't even understand YOU'RE question.

I understand the point he was making - something changed from 2002 to 2003 to make a 14-0 team into a 11-2 team. So the biggest change in that time would be the biggest impact for the 2002 national championship.

My opinion, though, is that games are more than just the players involved. A lot of timing, circumstances, luck, decision-making, and probably a hundred more things are involved in a game. I don't think there was much difference between the 2002 team and the 2003 team. A couple plays get changed in 2003, and that team is undefeated. A couple plays get changed in 2002, and that team has 2-3 losses.

Good point. Likewise, I can't argue FOR "if."

I think a better worded question would have been:

"Which one player had the biggest impact on the Buckeyes 2002 NC season?"

That would seemingly take out the abililty to say the coach or the whole defense or the entire team. And nobody should pick 'other' as a choice to the 'which one player' question without naming a player.

And since I said JT to this thread, I would have said Krenzel without that option.

In retrospect, you have a good point. I should have said "biggest impact" instead of "main reason", but I wouldn't have said "player". JT was obviously instrumental, so it wouldn't be much of a poll without him as a choice. My wording did let in the "whole defense" argument, so I can't say people are ducking the question by responding with it.

This was my first poll (and it took me 2 tries- feel free to make fun) and it'll be a good learning experience for my "Who was the most instrumental person during The Ohio State University's 2005 National Championship season" poll.

I chose Craig Krenzel for two main reasons that pop in my head:

1.) His bomb to Jenkins to beat Purdue 10-6.

2.) His play in the National Championship.

His leadership, his control of the offense, just everything about the way he conducted himself makes me say that we wouldn't have won the title without him.

Based on the wording of the post I'll hands-down say Doss. The kid gave up the shot at being a fairly high pick in the draft to come back with a 7-5 team that he obviously believed in, when maybe alot of others around him did not. Then, he had what alot of posters on BN at the time were considering an "average" senior year and debate was going on about whether or not he would even make All-American for the third time. Come time for the scUM game, the biggest game of his career, he probably delivered his best performance ever in a Buckeye uniform, and followed it up with another great performance in the Fiesta Bowl.

As for the biggest impact angle, again I'll say Doss. The defense of 2002 was the reason this team won the NC. The defense that year was anchored by a 3-Time All-American who had a great year and made everybody around him play better, but none better than him.
