Who will be the new coach?

I think Knight's to be making 300k or so.

EDIT: Sorry he WAS making $250k... new terms not disclosed.

No Prob. I don't think that he was making as much as O'Brien. Even a new contract isn't going to touch what O'Brien was making. Now. What would you do? Stick around Texas Tech and get pretty good talent because you're Bob Knight or go to Ohio State and pack the Shot every single game with all kinds of rowdies who are going to worship Knight the same way they have come to worship Tressel. This is the only way we pack that arena game in and game out regardless of accomplishment, which, is inevitable. I think they packed it last year just to watch him as the opposing coach. If I'm Knight, I take a long look at OSU. I'd even call Mr. Geiger up and let him know that I'd behave and I'd love to end my career at the school that I love, that brought me a National Championship as a player. That I'd love to bring OSU National Championships in Basketball while it is also winning Football championships. That I want to make tOSU the most dynamic university ever thought about.

If we don't get Knight. I don't think we're going to be as appealing. We can be as successful or more without him. But. Nobody's going to care, initially.

I admit my hopes are up, but I don't think it's going to happen. You have to aggree, however, that we'd draw serious interest. Somebody already mentioned that we'd be televised for every game on ESPN. That'd be huge for recruits. That'd have my interest! I'd get the college basketball gameplan on my DIRECTV and my wife could BITE ME, because she really, really, really (doesn't even let me watch NBA Finals on 61") hates basketball.

Geiger's got to think about the money. Plus. I honestly don't even think we'll get sanctioned because-as of now- it's all on OB.

Another thing people are not really mentioning about Knight is he has absolutely no pressure to win at TT, he can basically just go status quo until the end of his career and as far as people in Lubbock are concerned he is doing a good job.

On the other hand at OSU he is going to be under a pressure cooker, no matter if he is Bob Knight or not. He wont be able to just kick back and get by, he will be expected to win. Plus who is to say that he would want to come back here anyway? Basketball plays second fiddle to football at OSU , and I am not so sure Knight could handle not being big coach on campus, because that would still belong to Tressel.

did anyone see the article in the Dispatch today? Robert Montgomery Knight is still a Buckeye, always has been, and always will be. he has made himself available for the Ohio State job every time it has come up... RMK loves Ohio State, and REALLY wants to finish his career as the Head Coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes... Bob Knight is good enough for me.

BTW, Jim Cleamons told the LA Times today that he is VERY insterested in the job, and wishes to contact Andy Geiger as soon as possible...

RMK would put butts in the seats..

When your avg attendence is down 3500+ and the only game that sold out this year was Texas Tech....

I know for a fact that Sports Marketing had a meeting a week or so ago called by Gieger dealing with the problems of losing money in men's basketball.

Knight would be a huge splash. I am torn if I want him or not, but I wouldn't mind Thad Matta, or possibly George Karl.

I am not big on Cleamons.. I know he is an ex-Buckeye, but I just don't think it would be that huge of a hire..

As I have thought about this I have somewhat come to two conclusions. I think that Geiger will end up hiring someone like Matta, or another great coach that will fit the ideals that Geiger usually looks for in a head coach.

When I first began thinking about this, that would have been the direction that I too would have gone. However; the longer I think about it the more I tend to believe that the best choice very well could be Bob Knight.

Everyone knows that OSU is football first, and pretty much all of our fans think that way as well. Especially when the basketball team is struggling. This backetball season I found myself more interested in football recruiting and speculating about next football season, rather than how the basketball season was going. The more the team lost, the less interest I had. Yes I am kind of a fareweather basketball fan, but not in the sense that I root for the team that is winning, but in the sense that when my team is not winning I tend to lose interest in the sport entirely. I didn't even fill out a tournament bracket this year for the first time in many years.

I think that Knight is the one coach that could be chosen that would naturally demand the attention of OSU fans. He would draw our attention at least for a while whether the team won or lost. Knight is the one coach who could propell basketball into the OSU limelight and grab the attention of all OSU fans. There may be issues with his on the court antics, but off of the court, he would run a clean program that OSU couldbe proud of. Knight runs a clean program, and really cares for his players, but his coaching antics are what gets attention and gives him a bad image. Kind of reminds me of a former football coach. I personally would love to have a coach in any sport that would bring to mind such a comparison.

Too bad it probably won't happen.

Yeah, I know about Knights contract ext. and I think that heis a man of his word, but I also think that the OSU job is the only job that could ever cause him to go against his word. Probably just hopeful thinking though. I just hope that this whole mess gets cleaned up with minimal damage done to the program.

I am discounting that contract extension talk from Tech. Tech announced that agreement while Knight was out of pocket and did so IMO to accomplish expressly what they have accomplished - make it look like Bobby is more obligated than he is and discourage OSU publicly. And they did it immediately after the OSU job became open (the very next day in fact) because they KNEW Knight would be interested. All that really says is that they have been talking about an extension. (I don't think Bobby gave them a verbal, let alone signed the LOI.) Regardless of what they agreed to if opportunities come up before the contract is signed there is nothing unethical about changing one's mind.

As regards Cleamons (with whom I shared at class at OSU many years ago - one in which I don't recall ever seeing him open his eyes) other than being an OSU grad is there ANYTHING that he has done to distinguish himself as a candidate?

That agreement means jack shit until Knight puts pen to paper. F**k Gerald Myers. TT wasn't in a big hurry to extend his contract, but after OB gets canned they're panicking. Check out this quote from the article:

Athletic director Gerald Myers told The Associated Press on Wednesday the agreement probably will be signed next week. Knight's contract pays him $250,000 a year and runs through May 2006.

The asshole purposely made the "announcement" during the time that OSU appears to be making grounds on snatching Knight away from them. Probably signed next week? Keep dreamin', cow "poker"...
