I ripped off the idea for this thread from a poster over at BN. There, I said it.

Now that coaches can call recruits again, if you were Ohio State's recruiting coordinator who would be the first 5 recruits you would call?

If they were my first five calls, I'd swing for the fences. I'd give Justin King and Derrick Williams love until they told me "No". And I'd call Jonathan Stewart and Javon Ringer, to increase my chances of having an A+ running game for the next five years. Then I'd call Dan Doering, because if we got him we'd have an O-line for the ages. My daughter could run behind 'em.

Here's my pitch to the five:

Justin King: "Justin, none of the other programs recruiting you can offer more to advance your football career than tOSU ...period!"

Derrick Williams: "We'll stack our record of turning out Heisman trophy winners up against anybody's, Derrick. We think you're in that league."

Jonathan Stewart: "Jonathan, you could be on National Championship teams here at Ohio State and we think you could star on them."

Javon Ringer: "Just wanted to touch base, Javon, to remind you how special we think your are and how much fun we think you'd have playing in the Horseshoe next year. Are you hittin' those books?"

Dan Doering: "Dan, we want you to attend tOSU because we think you can be a big part of one the greatest offensive lines in college football history."

I am fully aware that this is an offense-heavy top five, but that's where I think the most effort should be made right now -- to turn around the bad rap JT is getting nationally for anemic offensive play.

First, I'd call Derrick Williams -- regardless of whether or not people here think we have a chance, we're in his final 8 and he's a STUD. Absolute stud. 'Schoenhoft to Williams.... TOUCHDOWN!' sounds great. I'd let him know that he's a top target of mine for the year.

Second, Mo Wells. The guy already loves us, we love him, just re-affirm the love, let him know he's wanted, and what he could do here.

Third, Justin King. I know we've got CBs out the wazoo, but he's special and I think you gotta let him know the love is there.

Fourth, Doug Worthington. Tell him about Vernon Gholston being in the two-deep, and how Simon Fraser (another very tall and quick end) has succeeded. I see Worthington becoming a Simon clone (hopefully more productive, but Simon's still a great player), putting on 30-40 pounds in college and not losing any speed. This guy is somebody I *really* want, but he's not getting the love of the top 3 guys, so we don't need to tell him how great he is immediately. Sometime around noon would be fine.

Fifth, Javon Ringer. Re-affirm what I've told him before. 'Javon, this school year is it. You perform in the classroom this quarter, you've got an official offer, just keep up the good work'. I think he will. I'm sure the staff is showing a lot of love and encouragement to Ringer to keep his grades up.

I'd call Taz sometime on this day, just not right away, because he doesn't seem like the type of kid who's excited by when a team calls.

Worthington
Stewart
AMW
Lymon
Hight

My reasoning is, first, defense wins championships, so I want to call at least 3 defensive guys.

Worthington - Tall, quick DE from NY state. The last DE we had for NY was pretty decent.
AMW - Probably the best safety in the country. From Ohio. Tall and fast. No need to say more.
Hight - Need a solid DT to go along with Worthington at DE (and I actually misread the choice as Callahan Bright, not Hight).

Second, we need a great RB and one more top WR to go along with Hartline.

Stewart - Possibly the best RB in the country. Likes the Buckeyes a lot. Style similar to Clarett (minus the problems).
Lymon - 6'5" with 4.4 speed and great moves. 'Nuff said.

Lord Jeff:

I like your five very much. And, as always, you are very rational and realistic in your point of view.

But signing day is not till next February. Methinks you're giving up on some of the superstars too early. We've got 5 months and a whole season of football to covince the great ones that tOSU is where they ought to be. A great year by Zwick could get the attention of a Derrick Williams. Some electric play by Teddy Ginn might start a buzz in Justin King's thinking. So I say, put in the call and show 'em some love. It can't hurt.

And besides, it's only a day-dreaming exercise -- dream big!

Go Bucks!
