Why does NONE of this surprise me!

I'm willing to bet YOU'RE WRONG about the check!

If you live off-campus, you get a monthly check of about $1350 to cover living "expenses" and food, etc. If you live with a couple guys, you're paying about $400/month in rent & utilities, and maybe $100 in food. Trust me, they have plenty of money left over every month for clothes and beer.

This isn't a case of a poor kid seeing $$$. It's about a greedy kid that didn't think he'd get caught.
I use to collect those and it was, may be $600 a month. And it is NOT enough money for everything. You can't tell me the cost of living in Columbus has gone up that much in 10yrs ($1,350/month for a scholarship check)! I WILL find out exactly what the checks are now, but just got off the phone with a player from last years team and he said the checks were in the $800 range per month. Mind you these checks ONLY come during school qtrs where a student-athlete is enrolled full-time. And if a student lives on campus (in dorms)...his check is not nearly equal to that of being off campus. Why do you think they all go "off campus" after their freshman year? To get that check...

On another note: My parents helped me out with my rent off campus and extra food money b/c it WAS NOT enough! I was one of the lucky one's who had parents that could afford a couple hundred dollars/month for food and extra expenses. A lot of these guys are not that lucky.

Cleve Bucks needs to get his facts straight before making such statements!

Strohs...you wouldn't get those 80 cases of beer after all expenses with the current scholarship check either...sorry!

If the stipend is $1350, I could easily get 80 cases!!
If its $800, then not quite 80, but enough for a month!
*edit*
If its $850 a month, its plenty to live off of.
Plus remember they set these guys up with good jobs over the summer,
if they cant save some money then, that thats their fault.

OK, let me get this straight. If I'm a scholarship football player, living off campus, I get $850 a month. I have essentially no expenses school-wise (tuition and books are paid for). Also, I get team meals (breakfast and dinner?). So, the only real expenses I have are that of rent/utilities and getting to/from class. I would imagine I could get a decent place for me and a roomie for around $600 a month. At $300 for my half of the rent, that would leave me with $550 for the month to futz around with. And that's if I don't have a job during the off-season. Now, do football players still get team meals during the off-season?

I remember I didn't have enough after the check ten years ago and well, I'm willing to bet I wouldn't have enough today with $850/month. Probably just squeak by...(I'm diggin into this one...stay tuned.) This is a big issue with me obviously!

keep in mind utils heat a high speed internet connection food and such, its not all that crazy. i still am not willing to admit 850 i cant get ahold of anyone to confirm it at this point but i believe this is the number, also you only get it when you are in school full time (sept-june) though some go to school full time inthe summer

intresting considering it is an "athletic band" also if the cheerleaders are athletes the bandies should be too

Room, board, and meals is $2857 per quarter. They also get an allowance for misc expenses like travel. If it is anything like some of the other varsity teams at OSU, they also get some cash before they go on a trip for food.

The quarter is less than 3 months long. 11 weeks actually, including finals week. Do the math.

Oh yea, they also do not pay for books. That saves a good $300-400 a quarter.

They also get some meals at the WHAC.

It all adds up, and it's a lot more than 850 per month. When all is said and done they're clearing a nice chunk of change.

I will see if I can get a copy of one of my buddy's old checks.

Details here they are:

Just got confirmation from a current player via the phone. Checks are $940/month.

I then asked about rent, utilities, food, gas, and other expenses. Basically, you're out of money towards the end of the month!

He pays about $700/month in rent and once all the utility bills are paid. The "left-overs" goes to paying his cell phone bill (these can vary), car (gas, up-keep, payments?, insurance) and food (to pay for two meals a day and all meals on Saturday's and Sundays)! Seriously this is barely enough. The $1,350 Cleve Buck was quoting (by the way...totally off dude!) is fair in IMO! I wouldn't be bitching about that!

So there it is...the FACTS. $940/month...barely enough IMO!

Why do you think most guys live 15 mins off campus? Much nicer place and much cheaper as long as you have more than 2 people.

Some of the guys do live just off campus; Mangold, Hawk, Carp, D'Andrea, Pitcock, etc. The houses they're living in are around $350/month rent, maybe $450 total if you have a high heating bill. $400 on average.
