Why is this news?: Ohio State's Corey Smith waiting for final ruling on 6th-year eligibility, effort paying off for walk-ons

Ohio State wide receiver Corey Smith, a fifth-year senior this past season, was injured in early October against Indiana. The injury was to his leg, which was rolled over on a play where Smith was blocking. The broken leg was unfortunate, as Smith was ruled out for the remainder of the season. Now, Smith and the Buckeyes are hoping to get a final ruling on the status of his application for a sixth-year of eligibility from the NCAA, in hopes of playing one more season at Ohio State. Nothing official has been ruled per a spokesman that the Bucknuts staff talked to, though Dontre Wilson made a post on Instagram that Smith would be returning for another season.
Whether or not Wilson's post was accurate, Ohio State could certainly use Smith back next year if at all possible. With nine Buckeyes opting to head to the NFL after their Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame -- including wide receivers Michael Thomas and Jalin Marshall -- Ohio State would no doubt be thrilled to have Smith back in 2016. The wide receiving spots seem to be wide open for the most part, and Smith would have a strong case to be one of the starters.
"I think myself and Joe (Burger) have kind of set the bar pretty high for walk-ons, and I take pride in that. Going through it together I think is probably a huge part of being where we are today."

A pair of linebackers for Ohio State, Joe Burger and Craig Fada, have worked their tails off for the Buckeyes for the past three seasons. Now, it looks like their hard work will be rewarded as the two walk-ons were told by Urban Meyer that they would be receiving full scholarships for at least the spring semester (and could be more, depending on how the 2016 recruiting class pans out). Though nothing has been promised their entire careers at Ohio State, the scholarships weren't important to the two. With the Buckeyes facing reduced scholarships back in 2012, players like Burger and Fada were key members of the team that were there because they loved being a part of something special.
Both linebackers have earned letters for the past three seasons and could earn their fourth as seniors in 2016. Burger has played in 21 games for Ohio State and is an Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree. Fada has played in 26 games the past two seasons and has earned one Academic All-Big Ten honor so far.
"I want to see them fight. I want to see them come back and play a little harder in practice, a little bit better. Hopefully not only those two (Lyle and Thompson), but everybody says this practice thing is for real. We're not gonna come in wasting time, we're gonna compete and get after it. I think with that said, hopefully we're moving in the right direction."

Ohio State basketball has had an interesting journey so far this season. A rocky start was smoothed out by a big win over a top 10 Kentucky team, and the Buckeyes have shown flashes all year that they can be solid. But inconsistency seems to be the largest issue for Thad Matta's team as of late, though the recent practices have had Matta uncharacteristically changing the lineup and expanding the rotation. After the Gray squad (normally the bench players including A.J. Harris, Kam Williams, Mickey Mitchell, Daniel Giddens, and David Bell) continually won in scrimmages against the starters, Matta took the initiative and tinkered with the lineup. The result was Harris and Giddens getting the start over JaQuan Lyle and Trevor Thompson, who moved to the bench.
Following the move, Monday night, the Buckeyes rolled to a 66-46 win over Penn State. Keita Bates-Diop scored had a game-high 22 points and seemed to get an expanded role with Harris' pass-first play style as opposed to Lyle's. Either way, it's interesting to see Matta shake up the lineup when he's usually pretty reserved about having a deeper bench or rotation.
