Why Notre Dame Can Win

Carmen Ohio

All-American
How about an optimistic thread on this game.

The scenario: Michigan is starting a freshman quarterback in one of football's most heralded rivaries against a pissed-off, jacked-up and disrespected Irish defense. The U-M runing game is anemic so if it's stoppped early the Wolves will have to count on an inexperienced leader to air it out.

The Irish offense that was supposed to be much improved was written-off after just one game. Maybe the BYU game showed them what they need to do to get to the next level... and maybe they'll employ those changes against U-M. Hopefully they'll have their starting running back for the game.

The coaching staff knows a humiliating loss could mean their jobs. They play it close to the vest in a grind-it-out, ball posession type game. A touchdown and 3 field goals. Michigan scores twice and has the ball at the end of the game, but Henne's inexperience comes through and they run out of downs.

The optimistic final score: Notre Dame 16 Michigan 14.

You forgot to mention a biggie...turnovers. Michigan had a bunch in opportune places, which led to the score being a blowout last week. If the Irish can at least punt instead of fumble or throw picks, and they can get 2-3 Michigan turnovers, they have a shot at keeping it close, anyway.

... an excellent point!

It is hard to believe that Michigan's kicking game could be worse than it was last season. 2004 looks to be even more adventureous, and if ND capitalizes on this phase of the game, it has a good shot at shortening the field and getting some points.

ND always seems to play Michigan tough. With the exception of last year's blowout, ND hasn't lost to Michigan by more than 10 points since 1981. They play Michigan even tougher in South Bend...they are 6-2-1 since 1980.

"PUNT BLUE PUNT"

nd can very well win this game, just check out scUM's most recent out of conference road games results

2000- @UCLA LOSS
2001- @Washington LOSS
2002- @ND LOSS

Lloyd decides to break the streak and works tirelessly on a exotic new punt formation unlike anything college football has ever seen.. Result:

2003- @Oregon LOSS
2004- ?

New qb or not, a huge edge in turnovers or not...scUM wins this game big.
ND looked absolutely horrible vs BYU last week (and BYU is not that great).
If ND is to have even a small chance, it had better improve 500% from last week

that be true, Milly, but for most of those years, ND had a good team, at the worst, respectible. that's not even close to being the case this year...or last.
