Ohio State Dealt With Pronounced Obstacle
By Larry Stewart, Times Staff Writer

So how is it that Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, of Findlay, Ohio, ended up at Miami of Ohio instead of Ohio State? Chalk it up to a recruiting mistake by the Buckeye coaching staff.

"We had a lot of bad experiences with Ohio State," Roethlisberger's father, Ken, told The Times' Sam Farmer. "If we got any phone calls at night, after 10, the latest one would be from Ohio State. He's got school the next day, the phone is ringing after 10, and we're saying, 'There's Ohio State calling.' "

According to Roethlisberger's mother, Brenda, the Ohio State recruiters also had trouble pronouncing the family's last name.

"They'd say, 'Mrs. Ro … Mrs. Roeth … ,' " she said.

Add Roethlisberger: He said he almost ended up playing football for Duke. Why Duke? "I figured I'd get good seats for the basketball games," he said.

I guess Ben is pretty close to Mike Oxley, who is also from Findlay as well as a Miami (OH) and OSU alumn. Mike said that in spite of the whole Tight End, late call and what not, Ohio State still made a strong push for Roethlisberger at the end. Evidentally the deal was sealed when Ben ran into coach Cooper in an airport and Coop didn't know who he was.

Sounds kind of like when Anthony Gonzalez went on a visit to michigan and the coaches thought he was a kicker. Glad we knew he was a receiver with wheels.

Oiler did Findlay's coach get sacked for the worlds worst case of nepotism?
Findlay has a great team nearly every year so his job was pretty safe. The thing you don't realize is that Ben was a heck of a receiver as well. With his height, hands and athletic ability he could've been a pretty good college Tight End as well. I don't know that he had any experiencing with blocking and his speed probably wasn't what you'd like out of a receiving tight end...but this kid flat has skills. I'd venture to guess that the coach knew Ben was a better QB but wanted to get both kids out on the field at once to squeeze what he could out of the team.

Still a boneheaded move in hindsight  .
