Will scUM even compete for an NC in the next decade?

Did they play Michigan? You see, a tough choice indeed. :wink2:

EDIT: BTW, you're welcome 21. Next time don't dig the hole so deep and get out of it yourself.
Personally, I root for the weasels against ND, since it should help the strength of the Big-10 and the perceived strength of our opponents. But I don't have a problem with tOSU fans that root for ND in that game - but only that game.

And I made a mistake while giving grad some grief - ND only played 13 games in 2002. When you go 5-7, like they did in 2003, you don't get invited to a bowl game.

And even though I'm about half-Irish, and it's St. Paddy's day, I still hate ND today!

Grazie...good to know you have my back.

Chief, that is the difference in us...you are telling your son what a nice man the tOSU fan really is...I would be telling mine how much I despise the Domers

Here's Fiu's take about Carr, scUM and NC chances, from CFBNEWS.com:

http://www.cfbnews.com/2005/Ask_CFN/Ask_CFN.htm

In response to last week’s discussion about Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr being overrated …
I just got done reading your mailbag, and I understand you are probably not a diehard Michigan fan and can't really understand our grievances with Carr, but here are mine, and they seem to resonate throughout Michigan's diehard fan base. We consistently rank in the top 10 in recruiting, year after year, yet we have not even CONTENDED for a national title under him except for 1997. We are consistently not prepared for road games or running quarterbacks. Last year should have been a wakeup call for all Michigan fans. We faced 3 running quarterbacks, and consistently displayed an inability to stop them. Against Texas, we had a month to prepare, knew Vince Young can't pass and would try to run first, and he gets nearly 200 yards and 4 TD's? They have both been living off 1997 and Charles Woodson for far too long. Their grace period is up. Losing 3 games a year with the ELITE talent we have is unacceptable. With Carr, we will NEVER have an elite program. We will have a good, but not great. We will never reach the level of a USC, Miami, Oklahoma, or the like with Carr at the helm. We consistently go into other teams stadiums who have far lesser talent and due to our conservative gameplanning on both sides of the ball come out with a loss. It's unacceptable. And for my fellow fans to say that going to Rose Bowl's is the standard bearer for big 10 coaches is exactly the mindset that will keep us from being a great program in the near future. I don't think Pete Carroll is sitting in his office planning out how to win his conference, he's planning to win a national title, and we need a coach who wants to do the same.
– MCJ

A: Once again, I received a stunning number of e-mails with a “Carr must go” theme and only a few that came to his defense. MCJ’s e-mail pretty much summed up the 60+ complaint responses in an important study of fan bases and expectations.

First of all, let’s address this “reaching the level of a USC, Miami or Oklahoma.” Quick, how many national titles has Miami won since 1991? Three? Four? Nope. One. That’s just as many as Lloyd Carr has won. Quick, how many national titles has Oklahoma won since 1985? Yup … one. How about Florida State since 1993? One. What happened to the elite of the elite Nebraska program? Don’t forget that this USC dominance is a recent thing after decades of being above average.

The “Carr must go” attitude is unappreciative at best and spoiled at worst. You say Carr is living off 1997? At least he won a national title. Ask John Cooper and Mack Brown what it's like to try to play for national titles year after year with teams full of superior talent.
Would you rather have the Bo era back? Talk about underachieving with elite talent, Michigan wasn’t within ten miles of a national title chase after the early 1970s and routinely spent the first few months of the off-season trying to walk correctly after the atomic wedgie applied by the Pac 10 in Rose Bowl after Rose Bowl (Bo was 2-9 in Pasadena). The gold standard for college coaches is to win the conference title, and yes, Pete Carroll’s first goal is to win the Pac 10 and hope everything else falls into place. Michigan has gone to two straight Rose Bowls. Everything past that is gravy and requires a ton of good luck.

Finally, don’t assume recruiting is so easy. I received several e-mails saying Michigan recruits itself and Carr is simply along for the ride. Doesn’t Notre Dame recruit itself? How about Penn State? Washington? Carr and his staff consistently get top ten classes and consistently have top ten teams. You have to get the talent first before you can win championships. At least Michigan is in the ballpark.
