Wisconsin may change admissions process to help recruits

On the one hand, Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez insisted Thursday that his program's tougher admissions process for athletes compared to other schools has not competitively hurt the Badgers. On the other hand, Alvarez said Wisconsin is discussing a return to its old process so recruits could appeal verbally to their individual college at Wisconsin, making a case for why they should be admitted.

“I'd like to do it the old way because I think it's only fair to our coaches and to some student-athletes that their stories should be heard,” Alvarez said at Big Ten media days. “They should have the right to have an appeal.”

Gary Andersen told's Dennis Dodd in January that he made the surprising decision to swap his post as Wisconsin's coach for the same role at Oregon State because of the admissions process. Andersen said it was “highly frustrating” that he lost some recruits to academics after telling them they would be able to enroll.

Most recently, highly-touted Dallas running back Jordan Stevenson signed with Wisconsin and qualified under NCAA standards but was not admitted into the school. Stevenson announced Thursday on Twitter that he has been admitted to Big Ten rival Nebraska and will play there this season.

“I feel bad,” Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said. “The kid did everything we asked him to do. … There's a big part of me that's happy he landed at a good place.”

Alvarez said he is hopeful a new admissions process will be in place for the 2016 class. Wisconsin's admissions process changed about five years ago, according to Alvarez. Previously, the athletics department would take appeals to individual colleges rather than first through the admissions department.

    1. It's not fair? Each year, millions of kids submit applications to LOTS of schools and only get a "nope" letter to show for it. Since when do those kids get to fly over and start arguing, because "nope" letters are not fair?

    2. It is Gary Anderson's fault for telling them they would be able to enroll, not somebody else's fault.

    3. So you didn't get accepted? Just DEAL WITH IT!

Wisconsin new home for former Clemson/Oklahoma/Michigan LB

Kellen Jones began his collegiate career in the Big Ten… continued it in the Big 12… continued it further in the ACC… and will now, reportedly, finish it in the conference in which he started. reported late this past week that Jones has decided to transfer out of the Clemson football program and transfer into the one at Wisconsin. Jones made his decision after taking an official visit to Madison earlier in the week.

Because the linebacker has already graduated from Clemson, he will be eligible to play immediately in 2015 as long as he enrolls in a grad program not offered at his now-former school.

And, speaking of now-former schools, Jones has a boatload of them.

In February of 2011, Jones signed on as a three-star member of Michigan’s recruiting class that year. Six months later, Jones announced that he was transferring to Oklahoma before ever stepping foot on the field at UM. Seven months later, Jones decided to leave OU and, one month after that, he reunited with defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

Jones did manage to play 12 games for the Sooners before transferring to the Tigers. At Clemson, he played in a total of 16 games, including 13 in 2014. He was credited with 29 tackles, one forced fumble and a half of a tackle for loss.

LOOK: 4-star WR uses Monopoly board to make verbal commitment

It's an unofficial count, but I believe there are roughly 400,000 different versions of Monopoly being produced today. There's the classic version, and then there's The Simpsons version currently in my basement, and a whole lot of others.

And now there's a Make Your College Choice version. This latest edition was created by four-star wide receiver A.J. Taylor, who used a Monopoly board as a prop while announcing that he'd be attending Wisconsin.
