Ayers joins Wizards' staff

Washington hires ex-Sixers coach as an assistant
The Associated Press 2:30 PM EDT, July 24, 2007 Ayers fills the slot that opened when assistant coach Tom Young retired in June. Tom Thibodeau was hired as an assistant in early July, but he left the team just days later after having what Jordan called "a change of heart."

As an assistant to Larry Brown in Philadelphia, Ayers helped the 76ers reach the playoffs five times, including making the NBA finals in 2001. He went 21-31 as the team's head coach in 2003-04.

Ayers was Ohio State's head coach for eight years, and was The Associated Press Coach of the Year in 1991.

Mike Malone left Monty Williams' staff last week to join Mark Jackson in Golden State and on Monday Williams announced Randy Ayers has been promoted to the lead assistant coach.
"It's an easy move for us because he's been a head coach and a lead assistant," Williams tells The Times-Picayune. "But losing Mike is a tough blow for us because he meant so much to our program, teaching every day and his ability to communicate. You don't just try to replace guys like that quickly."
Williams doesn't have a timetable for filling the vacancy on his staff and his goal is to hire someone who wants to be with the team long-term.
