Woody Hayes Athletic Center (Official Thread)

WHAC Hours and Stadium Tour?

When is the WHAC open for public viewing of some of the trophies? Mon-Fri 8-5? I know it is closed during gamedays. I read that the coolest trophies are off to the left in an authorized personnel area only. Anyone with authorization want to give me a tour?

I read in a post by Thump that there is a tour of Ohio Stadium for $2-3 per person for a group of 5-8 people. You get to see the luxury boxes, lockerroom, recruiting room, band room, and even down to the field, but not on the grass. Anyone have details on how to sign-up?

I haven't been there this Spring yet, but as of late last year all the main trophies and awards (NC trophy, major bowl trophies, heismans, etc., even some of the major individual player awards) were still in the main loby of the WHAC.

I have no idea about any tours or such but there are a lot of other neat awards and Buckeye memorabilia hanging on the walls of the halls in the "resticted" area (the hall to the locker room, coaches offices, film room etc.) like Coach T's coah of the year awards, I believe pics of the all Americans, etc.

If the school doesn't already have some sort of tour opportunity set up for the general public, then I think it would be worth while to do.

The March after we won the National Championship I was on my way to Disney with my family. We stopped in Columbus and went to the WHAC. There were all kinds of players coming out, ie Gamble, Lydell etc. Well I walked up to Lydell and told him how proud I was of the teams accomplishment, and I asked him if the NC trophy was inside for public viewing. He had Josh Huston hold the door for me and my family. We went inside and viewed all the AA pictures and I saw Mike Doss go into the weight room. Saw Coach Heacock also. Got to the atrium and there were all the Heisman Trophies and the NC trophy. The only thing that would have made my day would have been to run into Coach Tressel and have my daughter sing the Buckeye Battlecry to him. I don't know if I was just there at the right time or if they have toughened up on entering but I definately had a ball that day.

I have been in the building myself also. I was there this summer(july) for a OSU Football Camp. Its a great building, i actually got to work out in the weight room. Didn't notice the poster showing the weight records, but i did see the poster/wall hanging that showed what former buckeyes had came back to lift weights there. I'm drawing a blank on the name right now, but the top name had a span of like 17 years of coming back after he left OSU. They had two count-down clocks one showing how much time until the next game(Miami OH at that current time) and how much time until the Michigan game. They also took us to the film/video room, VERY NICE. They showed us a highlight clip of ohio state over like the last 20 years up to last year. We never saw the locker room, but i didn't really see the need for us to be there, but i would have liked to see it.

Also i heard the player that holds the bench press record is now Mike Kudla at 610 lbs. My max is like 185, i can't imagine trying to do 610.

If you look at the date of the original post you'd realize Kudla was still in diapers way back then :)

Imagine what the WHAC will be like once they renovate it (I've heard tlak of this, but nothing definite)...it seems like it is a very nice facility as is

Well remember the building was built when Woody was around, about 30 or so years ago. My grandpa used to work for the University. He worked in maintence and spent time at the Fawcett Center. He said at one time that some of the upper floors of the Fawcett Center was a hotel. And that Woody was always worried about Michigan spying on their practices. And that is why the indoor practice field was built. He also said that the University busted into a room in the hotel and found spies from Michigan looking down on the practices.

Now also remember the building has been renovated before. I know for a fact that the lobby was re-done when Cooper was there. When you walk in the lobby and look straight up you'll see a kinda of tinted window and that was at one time Cooper's office. Would have been Tressel's office but he has a smaller one down the hallway with the other coaches.
