Woody Hayes Quotes (Official Thread)

I watched him at practices twice. The phrase that sticks in my mind is, "Level off. (expletive deleted) Level off."

Anyone here who ran the ball for the Buckeyes heard that expression a thousand times. He wanted all of a man's energy aimed directly into the men who would try to tackle them.
anyone who ever saw a woody practice knew well woody wasnt afraid to kick his players butt's, literally...

The reason I started this thread was to put all of Woody's great quotes in one place. I am also providing the reference link for each message. If the Mods feel that this is not proper, please feel free to delete this thread.

Quote of the day for May 6, 2008:
"Some people change, and some people change too late, and then you have a problem. Like the one we had back home in Newcomerstown when they had to give up driver's ed in the high school because the horse died."

Reading these quotes/stories makes me sad to have never lived through his era.

Those "good 'ol days" seem so distant as well. The game has gotten too big for people to recognize the kid's in equation. Woody saw the college kid's for who they were and took care of them in ways I can only imagine. He was a great man.

Kuhn eating glass, while a punter/recruit is in a bar on a campus visit? Just won't happen anymore...:(

These quotes are great.

Bucknuts.com - Morning Woody Quote: May 7

Quote of the day for May 7, 2008:
"You know, most players hate coaches. In a coach-player relationship, you just get to the point where you hate him, but Woody was different. He would make you want to kill him.
"I planned to kill him one time. I said, 'He's gone, he's gone. That (expletive), I'm gonna lay him out.'
"I had planned this murder plot. What happened was my father had never seen me play football, never in my whole career. On Dad's Day, he came up to see me play. The only game I missed in my whole career at Ohio State was that particular game, the only game I ever sat on the bench for 60 minutes. Woody said I was hurt. I wasn't hurt. We had a pushover that week. We were playin' somebody we could kick the (expletive) out of, and he benched me for 60 minutes.
"After the game, I proceeded up to where he was holdin' his press conference. I said, 'I wanna see you.'
He said, 'Just a moment.'
I said, 'I wanna see you now.'
"I was gonna kick his (expletive), we was gonna rumble.
"He said, 'I'll be with you in a moment.'
"When he finished his press conference, he came over and said, 'I wanna take you and your father and mother out to dinner. After you get dressed, meet me downstairs.'
"Now he done talked himself out of this ass-whuppin'. I want him to explain to my father and mother why he sat me on the bench for 60 minutes. This is the way he controls you. When we got to the Faculty Club for dinner, I couldn't eat nothin', I was still mad.
"He told my mother, 'We're savin' Jim for the Wisconsin game, for Alan Ameche. We didn't want to take any chances.'
"He told that damn lie -- I figured it was a lie -- to pacify me. I'm still sittin' there with murder in my heart plannin' what I'm gonna kill him with. That was the second biggest hurt I ever had, because I was all geared up to have a great game for my parents."

Bucknuts.com - Morning Woody Quote: May 8

Quote of the day for May 8, 2008:
"Yeah, he would punch us in the stomach, but it didn't hurt us. We would just laugh about it. You know that coaches couldn't do that today, because all the players' parents would be suing them. Hey, if he didn't punch you, he didn't want to make you better and he didn't care about you.
"I skipped class one day, and one of the professors called him. The next day, Woody woke me up and went to class with me -- all day. Can you imagine the kids' reactions to see Woody Hayes walking in and sitting down in their classroom? I told him that I would never miss another class. Coaches today wouldn't do that for you."

Bucknuts.com - Morning Woody Quote: May 9

Quote of the day for May 9, 2008:
"We all know Woody hated to lose. Once, he almost attacked the USC Trojan mascot riding the white horse in the L.A. Coliseum when they scored a late touchdown in 1963. 'I am going to knock that (expletive) off that (expletive) horse if he comes around that (expletive) track again,' he said. Another time, I intercepted a pass in a scrimmage at the stadium, and as I was getting tackled, I lateraled to Paul Warfield, who ran it in for a touchdown. I thought we made a wonderful play, and all of a sudden, Woody came and kicked me in the butt. 'What is a smart guy like you doing making a play like that?' he said. 'You could have fumbled!'"

Great "Woody Story" On Bucknuts Today

Quote of the day for July 9, 2008:

"Everyone knows that Woody was famous for his practice eruptions. My first year when I was a sophomore -- remember that freshmen could not play back then -- on a Thursday afternoon, we were practicing for The Game. Michigan. We were practicing punt returns. Back then it was standard to employ two return men, and I was one of them. The other was Matt Snell. Now, it was a whale of a windy day. Matt went to field this punt, and it was blowing so hard, there was no way he could catch it. He dropped the punt. "Woody came running down the field, and he referred to us as 'jackasses.' This was Michigan week, so everything had to be right. So we lined up and did it again. Matt said, 'You take this one.' So I dropped it, too. Woody was beside himself. This was the week before my 19th birthday, and Woody came running down the field, ripped off his hat, and started jumping up and down on it. Then he ripped it apart at the seams. I was thinking, 'Wow, how could he be that angry to rip that hat apart at the seams like that?'
"Now fast-forward to 20 years after that day. A friend of mine who worked for an NFL team would go to Ohio State to scout players. He always spent time with Woody. One day, they were talking for about an hour and Woody got up and said he had to get ready for practice. He reached in his desk and there were about a dozen of those black hats with the Block "O." He grabbed one and grabbed a razor blade and started to slit the seams. He wanted it to be ready in case he needed it to prove a point. It took 20 years, but I found out how he ripped that hat apart so easily."
