Worst sports injuries of all time

Anybody see the dude from St. Joseph's who was playing basketball a few years ago? He came down on the gound and looked down, and his entire leg bone was sticking out of his where his knee should have been. It was horrific.

ESPN also showed a guy playing in Greece on SPortscenter one time who got pissed at a foul call and banged his head into the backboard support in frustration...breaking his neck, and turning him into a quad. That was also bad.

I can't think of anyone who took the puck in the eye recently but in the last NHL season before the lockout Jeremy Roenick took a slap shot in the face breaking his jaw and a bunch of other bones in his face. Not the worst injury ever but one of the worst in recent years in the NHL. Awhile back I saw a video of an Australian Rules Football game where a player jumped to catch the ball and his leg shattered in midair and then when he landed, well you can just imagine what it would look like when someone lands a jump after breaking their leg. Another really bad one i saw was a skateboarder did a railslide and landed flat footed hyperextending his knee so much that his foot ended up at his shoulder.

I think for all Ohio State fans, the Willis McGahee hit stands as a benchmark for all future injuries. Case in point, I'm sure you've heard the following:

"I hope someone puts a Willis McGahee on Chris Perry."
or
"Vince Young is gonna get a Willis McGahee."

That senior big-back (Powdrell?) from USC had a pretty nasty one last week, I believe dislocating his ankle. They carted him off and his foot was just lolling 90 degrees to the right of where it should have been.

Surprisingly, not a serious injury:

But Ronnie Harmon broke my heart that day.

Assuming that the critical factor here is immediate grossness, as opposed to long-term consequences, I'm hard pressed to think of anything that tops the Malarchuk (sp?) incident. I wonder what actually happened to the "agony of defeat" ski jumper, 'cause that looked like it really sucked too . . .

'89 was definitely a bad year!

Malarchuk, Dravecky & Krumrie.

...and I watched all three.

What wasn't mentioned in the article is that there was a large fight behind the night as it happened and most of the players didn't notice. Malarchuk was just hunched over kneeling on the ice with a pool of blood quickly growing beneath. I can remember thinking that he was actually going to die on the ice before anyone got to him.

:(

Sadly, I knew exactly what it was going to be, and I watched it anyway.

blech

I think it is Tim Brown you see at the beginning of the video running away from teh pile with his face in his hands....he had to have know exactly what happened. McCallum actually almost had to have his leg amputated from all the damage done.
