Just call him an Eagle
Wide receiver Bam Childress has a moniker a coach can remember.
By Kate Fagan
Inquirer Staff Writer

A few times yesterday at the NovaCare Complex, David Culley, the Eagles' wide-receivers coach, didn't see precisely what he wanted.

Sometimes a cut wasn't crisp enough. Sometimes a player's eyes weren't turned back on the ball. Sometimes one of the men in Culley's charge - a youthful stable of aspiring Eagles receivers - just didn't sell the pattern.

Culley would step forward to speak. But sometimes, the name of the man beneath the helmet would elude him.

Such is life at the Eagles' minicamp for rookies and selected veterans: make a name for yourself or pack your bags.

While wide receiver Bam Childress is still trying to prove he belongs, the one thing he doesn't worry about is Culley forgetting his name.

"I think Bam is his favorite word," Childress said.

"I could have came back to the Patriots right after the Super Bowl, but my agent was telling me a couple teams were interested," Childress said.

Childress asked, "Who's the most interested?"

"He told me the Eagles were the most interested, that they wanted me to play in the slot, make plays," Childress said.

After going back and forth between returning to the Patriots or taking a shot with the Eagles, Childress said he believed his best chance to make a roster was in Philadelphia.

Childress said he hoped that versatility would help him snag a spot with the Eagles.

"The thing that I liked the most was [the Eagles] were saying I could play anywhere: inside, outside, return man," Childress said. "I don't want to just play one position. I want to play everywhere: return man, in the slot - wherever - offense, defense. It doesn't matter."

For a little guy, 5-10 receiver Bam Childress sure can take a hit. The free agent out of Ohio State popped right up after getting drilled by safety Sean Considine on one play and Mikell on another. They were both the biggest hits of the day.

The Day at Lehigh | Philadelphia Inquirer | 08/02/2008

Safety Quintin Mikell had the lick of the day, flooring second-year wide receiver Bam Childress on a route over the middle. No player has gotten up from more big hits at this camp than the diminutive Childress (5-10, 185), who also has shown the ability to hold on to the ball after the collisions.

Bam Childress and Jamal Jones are both free agents with previous NFL experience. Childress played three games with the New England Patriots from 2005-06 and was a member of their practice squad. Jones had six catches for 108 yards and a touchdown in 2006 with the New Orleans Saints in the year they reached the NFC title game.

Gone, not forgotten
Lost in the all the hype surrounding the return to Gillette Stadium of Asante Samuel was the fact that another former Patriot was also returning to his old stomping grounds as a member of the Eagles, Bam Childress.
"It was kind of like, 'I'm on the other side,' " said Childress. "It was cool though. I still went out there. I still tried to make plays. That's not ever going to stop.
Childress, who was signed by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State in 2005, spent most of his time in New England on the practice squad and was there for the entire 2007 season. However, he did appear in three games with the Patriots, making five catches for 39 yards and was a locker room favorite of many of his teammates.

Childress, who had two catches for 13 yards against his former team, said he talked to almost all the Patriots before Friday's game and spoke with Belichick afterward.

Riders sign a pair of receivers
January 12, 2009 - Canadian Football League (CFL) Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan Roughrider General Manager/Vice President of Football Operations Eric Tillman announced today they have signed import receivers Brandon "Bam" Childress and Johnny Quinn to one-year plus an option contracts. Financial details of the signings were not released.

Childress (5'9 - 185 lbs) played four seasons at Ohio State and was a member of the 2002 BCS National Championship team. He finished his collegiate career with 33 catches for 392 yards and added 159 yards on nine punt returns. Childress signed with New England following his collegiate career and spent three seasons on the Patriots practice roster. He dressed in one regular season game and recorded three receptions for 32 yards. He signed with Philadelphia in 2008 and attended training camp with the Eagles.

"Bam was a part time starter at Ohio State, but his athletic ability made him one of the surprises in New England's training camp back in 2005," stated Tillman. "He was a long shot to make their team, but the Patriots loved his speed, intelligence and versatility and, as such, kept Bam for two seasons."

"Playmaker is the first word they used to describe him in our discussions. The second comment was about his intelligence. Those are pretty good starting points. We will initially look at Bam at wide receiver, but he has the ability to play corner, too, if called upon. The Patriots gave him a lot of snaps in practice at corner. So, combined with his return skills, Bam is an ideal candidate to help us in many ways."

Cornerback Champ Bailey eager to win another championship
By Greg Harder, Leader-PostJune 4, 2009

REGINA ? Brandon "Bam" Childress has the pedigree of a champion.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders' hopeful, a cousin to Denver Broncos All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey, has been associated with winners throughout his football career. From capturing a national title with the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2003, to his three-year affiliation with the New England Patriots, it's an indisputable fact that where Childress goes success usually follows.

"I'm all about winning," offered the speedy receiver following Day 2 of Riders rookie camp at Mosaic Stadium. "I hate losing. I don't have a bad attitude when I lose, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I love to compete. I wanna bring that here too, but they already have it here. Whatever I can do to help the team win a Grey Cup, I'm there."

When it comes to winning, Childress has been there, done that, on the grandest stages in American football.

Childress was with the Patriots from 2005 to 2007, spending most of his time on the practice roster. New England won the Super Bowl in his rookie campaign and ? two years later ? had the first 16-0 regular season in NFL history. The team posted two more playoff wins before its quest for a perfect season ended at the hands of the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLIII.

"I've been fortunate," said the native of West Palm Beach, Fla. "In high school we were undefeated, in college it was a national championship. To be part of the 18-and-0 team, it was a blessing. Now being here, it's a blessing too. We have a chance to do something special. Everywhere I go I've been fortunate being in good positions on good teams."

A 5-foot-9, 185-pound "playmaker," Childress earned his nickname as a kid from imitating the character Bamm-Bamm on the Flintstones cartoon. That tough-guy persona transferred well to the gridiron, helping him emerge as a surprise fan favourite in training camp with New England, where he drew comparisons to versatile receiver/cornerback/returner Troy Brown.

"My agent told me about Saskatchewan," explained Childress, 27, who attended training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles last season. "I didn't know a whole bunch about the CFL but he told me Saskatchewan was real good and the coaches were real good. They're kinda like the New England Patriots, so I'd get comfortable real quick. I was, 'Yeah, I wanna go.' Right now it's just getting adjusted on the field but that's coming along great too."

For all he has seen and accomplished, Childress admits he would have liked a better crack in the NFL. That said, he has "no regrets" and is thankful for every opportunity he received, especially his time mentoring under the likes of Tom Brady and Randy Moss in New England.

"Even though you're not out there every game, you're still getting better and better because you're going against the best every single day in practice," added Childress. "Those guys were humble. It was never like, 'I'm too good to talk to this guy.' When I first got there, Tom introduced himself to me. I was just like, 'I know who you are; You don't have to introduce yourself to me.' That's how they were.

"It was just a great experience. Wherever I've been, I took something. Whatever I learn, I take it with me and be humble about it."

Time & Change: Bam Childress
Former receiver now tutoring receivers at Cleveland Heights High School
Updated: September 25, 2012
By Brad Bournival | BuckeyeNation

Success has always seemed to follow Brandon "Bam" Childress.

He was named Mr. Football in 1999 as Ohio's best player as a wide receiver for Bedford St. Peter Chanel. He won a state championship with the Firebirds on the basketball court, a national championship with the Buckeyes on the gridiron and was on the roster with the New England Patriots for Super Bowl XLII.

Childress closed his career at Chanel as the school's all-time leader in receiving yards (2,258), touchdowns (33), touchdown receptions (21), points (202) and all-purpose yards (7,103).

Signed as a cornerback by John Cooper, Childress spent five seasons with the Buckeyes. He switched over to wideout, where he made 33 receptions for 392 yards at Ohio State.

Undrafted in 2005, Childress played professionally for New England, Philadelphia and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Childress, 30, lives in Bainbridge, Ohio, and is an insurance agent for State Farm in Bedford.

He is also the wide receivers and defensive backs coach for Cleveland Heights High School.

Childress is a cousin to Champ and Boss Bailey.

BN: You went to Chanel and now your office is back in Bedford. What is the pull for you with Northeast Ohio?
