Surprising, Strong was having a....strong camp. Seemed almost a lock. Braxton has to be in great position. Kitchens seemed to be a big fan after the game talking about him.

They might be looking to use Braxton for some of the end-around plays that they miss a guy like Callaway for, at least the first four games. Kitchens definitely has a diverse offensive playbook, so they are probably willing to use his speed and athleticism for much more than just regular WR plays. They might be interested in having him throw some trick play passes as well.

Braxton Miller "picking up" on Cleveland Browns' offense

Since leaving Ohio State, former Buckeyes star quarterback and two-time Big Ten MVP Braxton Millerhas had an interesting go of things in the NFL. Converting from quarterback to wide receiver, Miller became a solid contributor to the Houston Texans' receiving corps from 2016 to 2017, but did not play in the regular season last year after failing to make the Texans' roster. After a year on the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad, Miller is now about a week into an opportunity to make the Cleveland Browns' 53-man roster. And it seems as though he is setting himself up to potentially be successful.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday in advance of the Browns' preseason finale against the Detroit Lions, head coach Freddie Kitchens offered an update on Miller's progress as he attempts to earn and keep a spot in Cleveland's wide receiver sroom.

"He's picking up the offense, so that tells you a little bit about his learning ability. And then we'll see if we can put him in some positions to make some plays Thursday night," said Kitchens. "He's doing well, though."

While Miller is expected to contribute on offense, Kitchens stated that the coaching staff has yet to decide whether or not he will also serve as a punt and kick returner.

"We've talked about it. We haven't decided. We've got some other guys we want to see back there too," said Kitchens. "So it would have more to do with that than not letting him catch them."

Miller was signed by the Browns last Wednesday to join a wide receiving corps that is rather top-heavy: Although the Browns pulled off a blockbuster trade for superstar wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. during the offseason, Beckham, fellow LSU product Jarvis Landry, and veteran Rashard Higgins are the only three wideouts with extensive NFL experience that will begin the year on the Browns' active roster. Antonio Callaway, entering his second season out of Florida, will be suspended for the first four games of the year for a violation of the NFL's policy on substance abuse.

Though Miller joining the Browns late in the preseason put him in an unenviable situation as far as making the roster was concerned, a path seemed to open for him on Tuesday when Cleveland waived Jaelen Strong, opening a potential spot for Miller. In Thursday's preseason finale, Miller will try to make his case over the Browns' other receivers on the roster bubble, such as Dorian Baker, Ishamael Hyman, Damion Ratley, Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi, and Derrick Willies.

Being a native of Huber Heights and a star with the Buckeyes, there will be plenty pulling for Miller to make the Browns as a local favorite. And speaking after joining the Browns last week, Miller expressed how at-home he feels in Cleveland.

"I did have a couple choices and I think this fell in my lap. This is the one I really wanted to go to," said Miller in a report by Matthew Florjancic of WKYC. "Being close to my son, my family. Being able to play for my home state, that’s one of the accomplishments I always wanted to do. I’m just happy to be here."

Browns’ Freddie Kitchens opens up about tough decision to cut Braxton Miller




The Cleveland Browns recently trimmed the team’s final 53-man roster down from 90 players, leaving many on the outside looking in on what could be a memorable season in the AFC North division. The Browns notably parted ways with former Houston Texans wide receiver Braxton Miller, who was unable to make the cut.


However, first-year Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens has since made a point to praise Miller as he believes that the former collegiate quarterback-turned-NFL wide receiver still has a chance to make it at the highest level.



Per Jeff Risdon in USA Today Sports’ Browns Wire:

“Braxton is not here anymore so I do not want to spend a lot of time on it, but Braxton has a future in the game,” Kitchens said. “He is a good player. It is just you have to make tough decisions, and it may not be the best spot for us right now and that is what we basically decided.”

In Miller’s defense, the Browns are currently stacked at the wide receiver position. With former Miami Dolphins wideout Jarvis Landry coming over to Cleveland last season, the Browns then acquired former New York Giants star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. this time around. Adding this tandem is rising sophomore pass catcher in Antonio Callaway. The Browns also elected to acquire yet another wideout in Taywan Taylor from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a future draft pick this past week.

Panthers make moves at wide receiver

CHARLOTTE -- The Panthers have placed cornerback Natrell Jamerson (foot) on injured/reserve, promoted wide receiver DeAndrew White to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and signed wide receiver Braxton Miller to fill the practice squad opening.

Jamerson played in five games for Carolina this season. He tallied one tackle on defense and two tackles on special teams. He joined Carolina in the opening week of the season after being waived by Green Bay. The second-year cornerback has played in 17 games in his career and tallied 13 tackles and one pass defensed.

White, who recorded six catches for 122 yards during the preseason, joined the Panthers in 2018 as a practice squad receiver. He originally entered the NFL in 2015 with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama.

Over the last four seasons, White has spent time with San Francisco (2015), New England (2016), Houston (2017), Denver (2018) and Carolina (2018-19). He has played in six games with one start and has recorded three receptions for 42 yards. He also has returned six kickoffs for 142 yards.

Miller comes to Carolina following a brief stint with Cleveland during the preseason. He spent the entire 2018 season on Philadelphia’s practice squad.

Miller entered the NFL from Ohio State as a third-round selection (85th overall) by the Houston Texans in the 2016 NFL Draft. In his two seasons with the Texans, Miller played in 21 games with nine starts and tallied 34 receptions for 261 yards and two touchdowns. Miller was a standout dual-threat quarterback with the Buckeyes as their three-year starter.
