That misguided “loyalty” was my biggest (only?) issue with Urban. As successful as he was I can’t help but wonder how much more he would’ve done with less of that.
They win it all in 2015, that's for sure. Also don't get embarrassed in 2016 and are in the playoffs most likely in 2017 and 2018. Oh, and while I still believe he would have retired soon, he wouldn't have retired in 2018.

So, maybe a little more?

Edit: imo, they're Clemson. Unfair to say they're Bama, but very realistic they are Clemson. Win it all 1, maybe 2 more times the past 4 years, and in every playoff.

I’ve seen it posted here a few times and I agree, Clemson currently is where I thought Ohio State would be when Urban was hired; 1-1a with Gump.

If OSU didn't get in because of a tougher schedule, I'd agree. But they didn't get in because of losing by 60 combined points to IOWA/PURDUE. Lose to those teams by a combined 20 points and they're in 5 straight playoffs imo.
Both of which are a byproduct of a 9 game schedule and having their flaws count more than others.

I disagree. Losing those games, yes. But not losing those games by 30 points each.
There's a 1/3 chance that neither is scheduled in a 8 game schedule. That's an enormous advantage.

It's not that the disqualifiers are undeserved. It's that they do not apply to others.

Getting blown out in one playoff game after a long streak of post season dominance? Not a problem, if you're Bama. Or Clemson.
Have a bad D? Not a real problem, if you're Oklahoma.
Lose to a terrible in conference team? Not a problem, if you are Clemson.
Losing one game and division? Not a problem if you are bama, even if you aren't the defending champs and didn't beat anyone all.

If OSU were getting punished for losing said "9th conference game" I'd agree. They're getting punished for losing by 30. While obviously it's a hypothetical, if they lose by 10 against each team, they're in both years imo.

See the edit.

I am actually fine with them missing all of those three years. I would just like to see others face consequences too when their resume is similarly flawed.

Name a tougher team on the road than Iowa, MSU, PED, or even Purdue for that matter.

What a VT squad without it's starting QB? What maybe TAM who hasn't done shit since we beat them in 1999?

What people fail to understand is the weekly grind that takes place. We don't get a week off but they do.

GT, SC, FURMAN, Georgia Southern, BC, FSU, NC State, Louisville, Duke, Wake, Pitt, Syracuse and TAM?

When the best you play is Syracuse then your schedule is shit.

They almost lost the one test they had before the playoffs.

We only have Rutgers, Maryland and Illinois as shit programs now in the BIG.They were on the ropes vs A&M who lost 4 games and should've lost a 5th to LSU. When you have no concern to your own conference that's some bull shit.

Again, it's not the loss. It's the LOSS. If OSU was left out after losing by 10 at Iowa or Purdue, I'd be 100% in agreement with all here.

I love hating on Alabama as much as the next man, but let's not pretend that anyone had as horrific a loss as us. If they'd have lost to Vanderbilt or Tennessee by 30, they wouldn't have made the playoffs either.

Want to bet? Who would have gotten in instead of Bama if they lost to UT by 30? Ohio State? Yeah right. UGa who they would have just beaten? Now we are down to number 7, Washington, UCF, LSU, Florida, Michigan.

Bama would have still gotten in.

I can hear the ESECPIN narrative now. "You can't expect any team to do what Bama dos week in and week out, especially in the gauntlet called the SEC. They just didn't have a good game and it is hard to get up for every opponent when they all circle you on their schedule."

Take that to the bank.
