Buchtel coach Ricky Powers planned to use his wide receivers, including junior phenom Corey Smith, along with quarterback Stephen Parker to his advantage. That played out exactly the way he wanted with Parker completing 7-of-13 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

As for Smith, try four catches for two touchdowns and 67 yards.

''He finally showed what he can do. The kid is special,'' Powers said. ''The only thing we ever want him to do is show that. Big players play in big games, and he did that.''

Smith, who is being recruited by a host of big-time Division I colleges, said that he had to step up.

''The seniors told me all week: We need you to step up and play to your ability,'' Smith said . ''I promised them that I was going to do it and I did it.''

Buchtel wide receiver Corey Smith prepares to celebrate a touchdown grab on Friday much to the dismay of Firestone defender James Coleman. The Griffins defeated the Falcons 38-25 to win their second straight City Series title.

AKRON, Ohio -- Wide receiver Corey Smith and defensive back Marlon Oden said they had to make big plays if the Buchtel Griffins were to repeat as Akron City Series champions, and they delivered as Buchtel came from a one-point, third-quarter deficit to beat Firestone 38-25 at InfoCision Stadium on Friday night.

Buchtel finished 6-0 in the City Series and improved to 7-3 overall as it awaits details of who and where it will play in the state playoffs. Firestone completes its season at 6-4 overall and 5-1 in the league.

Smith, who is at the top of a lot of major college football programs recruiting lists as only a junior, proved why, catching three touchdown passes, including two spectacular grabs while tip-toeing just inside the out-of-bounds marker.

Buchtel's Smith Catches Eye of Ohio State

by George M. Thomas on November 21, 2010

Akron Buchtel wide receiver Corey Smith has caught the eye of the Ohio State Buckeyes. After receiving offers from Michigan State and North Carolina, Smith is now on OSU's radar said Buchtel coach Ricky Powers.

Whether the Buckeyes offer him depends on his grades and college test scores. Smith has also drawn interest from LSU, their program is apparently waiting for game film from the entire season.

The Buchtel boys basketball team is off to a 6-1 start, but the Griffins will have to go on from here without junior Corey Smith. An All-Ohio wide receiver on the school's Div. III state runnerup squad, he is quitting basketball to focus on his football recruitment.

Ending a basketball experiment

The attempt by Buchtel's outstanding wide receiver, Corey Smith, to also play basketball has ended. He decided a second sport wasn't for him. There are some observers who say the junior has been deluged with so much recruiting interest from universities across the nation that he's had to devote his time to scheduling campus visits, as he makes a decsion on where his football career will continue. There's been intense interest from a number of SEC schools, as well as other college football powers.

Speaking of recruiting, East defensive standout Trevoris Bell has been generating growing interest while he awaits the results of his ACT score. East football coach Damon Beasley says Ohio University, Eastern Illinois and Hampton University are among the schools interested in Bell.

The Akron Beacon Journal is reporting that Kent State has offered Buchtel (Akron) cornerback Chevin Meadows and wide receiver Corey Smith. While Meadows is a senior, Smith is a junior who already has received interest from top programs in nearly every BCS conference including Ohio State.

Corey was at a bowl practice while Doran and Curtis Grant were on their official visits. He is good friends with Doran. Doran tries to take him under his wing to help him succeed. Corey has to focus more on the weights and perfecting his craft. Corey can be a very good wideout.

In the first post it says he is Doran's cousin?

HITTING THE GROUND RUNNING: New Kent State football coach Darrell Hazell is wasting no time. SportsInk.com's Brian Dulik reports that Hazell has already offered Buchtel cornerback Chevin Meadows and blue-chip Griffins wide receiver Corey Smith. Hazell's pitch is that both players would have a chance to play near home. Smith, a junior, has drawn interest from many of the top college football programs in the nation, including Ohio State. Smith was to make unofficial visits to a number of top Southeastern Conference schools this week.
