Meet a Buckeye: WR Devin Smith

Wide receiver // Devin Smith

Year: Sophomore

Vitals: 6 feet 1 inch, 200 pounds

Hometown: Massillon (Washington)

Major: Undecided

By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Thursday September 6, 2012

Devin Smith showed the college football world last Saturday he is capable of seizing the moment, his leaping one-handed grab of the first Ohio State touchdown of the new season making all the highlight shows, such as those on ESPN.

But it wasn?t Smith?s first starring role on ESPN in the past month. The sophomore wide receiver from Massillon, Ohio, showed off his comedic skills during a couple episodes of the ESPN All-Access series during preseason camp:

Q ? Folks who watched that series saw the segments in which you were doing impersonations of teammates and coaches. How long have you been doing such things?

A ? I started doing it when I was little. I just wanted to see if I could sound like someone else.

Q ? What was the impetus?

A ? I?d see Aries Spears and Mike Epps doing those things on TV. Mike Epps is my favorite comedian ? I think he?s the funniest guy on Earth. And to see and hear them sound just like another celebrity, I think it?s hilarious. I try to do the same thing. I know why they do it, too, because there?s just this special kind of feeling you get when you can make people laugh.

Another improvisation

A sophomore from Massillon, Smith seems to be emerging as the master of improvisation, scoring the game-winning touchdown on a 72-yard pass from Braxton Miller with 3:26 remaining. Smith was not the intended receiver, but Miller found him about 5 yards behind the Golden Bears? defense.

As offensive coordinator Tom Herman explained, the primary receiver was Corey ?Philly? Brown on an option route to the boundary, and Smith?s job was to clear out. Cal safety Alex Logan, whom Miller juked on his 55-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, was reading Miller.

?I looked at Philly, he went to Philly, I went to Devin,? Miller said of Logan.

Asked what he was thinking, Miller said, ?Just lay it up, make sure it?s there. Don?t fire it or nothing.?

Herman said, ?Braxton looked at Philly and realized ?Holy smokes, the guy who?s covering him is the one who?s supposed to be covering Devin.? I wanted to make sure he didn?t a) overthrow him, b) he didn?t throw it out of bounds and c) he didn?t underthrow him enough so somebody could catch up to him. He did a good job putting the ball where it needed to be and letting Devin run with it.?

Smith said as soon as he caught the ball, he thought of his mother.

?My mom tells me every time I catch the ball, run like a dog is catching me,? Smith said. ?When we got in the locker room, Philly was like, ?You?re Teddy Ginn down the field.? I thought that was pretty funny.?

This kid is going to be a star, imo! He has speed, athleticism and great acceleration. Just needs to work on staying focused all game long and avoiding stupid drops. He and Braxton will be quite the tandem for a while.

Yup, best offensive player besides Braxton in my opinion. Might become the best B1G receiver eventually, maybe even this season.

Receiver Devin Smith is Ohio State's go-to guy for big plays
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
on October 05, 2012 a

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? No single play can define a player. Anyone is deeper than one moment, more well-rounded than one catch. But the thing about Devin Smith's one-handed touchdown catch against Miami that knocked the college football world on its heels in the first week of the season -- that's exactly Devin Smith.

The Ohio State sophomore receiver might as well wear a loop of the play as a video nametag.

Nice to meet you, here's what I do.

Jason Hall, Smith's high school coach at Massillon High, missed the play live, but watched it on replay after a couple of his assistants told him he had to see it.

"Most people are probably in awe," Hall said. "To me, that's Devin Smith. He's been doing that for a long time."

Like against Wisconsin with a game-winning 40-yard touchdown catch a year ago. Like against Cal in week three with a 72-yard touchdown to break a 28-28 tie with less than four minutes to play. Like against Michigan State last week with the 63-yard touchdown that put Ohio State back ahead during the third quarter in a game the Buckeyes won by a point.

Asked about his strength as a receiver, Smith said, "My ability to make plays." That question and answer came before the North-South Game in Ohio Stadium in April 2011, when Smith was still a high school senior.

Ohio State has 18 completions of 30 yards or more in the past two season. Seven belong to Smith, and no other Buckeye has more than three.

"I always dreamed of making the play in the big game," Smith said, then ticking off those four show-stopping plays of his career. "Ever since I was little I dreamed of doing stuff like that."
