WR Garrett Wilson (All B1G, 1st Team All American, 2022 OROY, New York Jets)

Ohio State football | Garrett Wilson envisions starring role as freshman receiver

Garrett Wilson watched the College Football Playoff championship game with a different perspective than most.

One player in particular caught his eye. Receiver Justyn Ross caught six passes for 153 yards and a touchdown to help Clemson dismantle Alabama 44-16. Ross was just as impressive in the Tigers’ 30-3 semifinal victory over Notre Dame (six for 148, two TDs).

Ross was a five-star freshman. So is Wilson for Ohio State.

As Ross made catch after spectacular catch, Wilson was already thinking about the possibility of making a similar impact in his first season.

“Watching that, that’s super motivating to see people my age making plays on the highest stage,” Wilson said.

Those who have seen him believe it’s possible. Wilson is the highest-ranked Ohio State receiver recruit since Ted Ginn Jr. in 2004.

“His skill set is off the charts,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “His ball skills, adjusting to balls down the field, route-running ability and length (are) as good as I’ve been around.”

Day said that Wilson does need to get stronger, and Wilson is already making progress under strength coach Mickey Marotti since enrolling in January. Wilson said he added six pounds to his 6-foot-1 frame in his first month on campus. He now weighs 186 pounds.

“This is really the first time he’s being challenged in the weight room,” Day said. “Coach Mick and his staff is all over him.”

Day noticed Wilson while recruiting the receiver’s teammate, current redshirt freshman quarterback Matthew Baldwin, who was a year ahead of Wilson at Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas.

“I see this wide receiver drill going on,” Day recalled, “and I see a wide receiver drill a guy and then drive him into one of the trees and just start yelling and barking at him and I said, ‘Who is this kid?’ ”

He knew of Wilson, in part because Wilson spent his early childhood in Dublin before his family moved from Ohio to Texas. When Day spoke to Lake Travis coach Hank Carter, he became even more enamored of Wilson.

“He had nothing but great things to say about him, and then his film spoke for itself,” Day said.

K.J. Hill, Binjimen Victor and Austin Mack return for their senior seasons. Sophomore Chris Olave, who made a major splash late in the 2018 season, leads a group of talented younger players at the position. Wilson’s potential is as great as any of them.

“This is what I dreamed of growing up, and it’s here now,” Wilson said of playing for Ohio State. “It didn’t seem real to start, but it’s awesome.”

In a perfect scenario, Wilson can have that storybook freshman season. He knows from watching Clemson’s Ross that it’s possible.

“I think of myself as I am that caliber of player,” Wilson said. “Now it is just time for me to prove that every time I am out on the field. Hopefully, I am doing the same thing next year.”

Morning Constitutional: How Good Is Garrett Wilson As a Prospect?

2019-wide-receiver-Garrett-Wilson-Ohio-State.jpg

Wide receiver Garrett Wilson is the second-highest-ranked signee in the 2019 class for Ohio State. And in being the No. 2 receiver in the nation, he is the highest-ranked receiver signed by the Buckeyes in the internet era.

Anybody who has watched him can conclude quickly that talent is not an issue. In high school, he was dynamic with the football and just as dynamic in his quest to catch it.

Talent, however, is rarely ever enough to succeed in big-time college football, and recruiting rankings are littered with guys who never came close to panning out.

So while putting together recruiting classes and targeting prospects, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is first looking for the kind of talent that can play for the Buckeyes, but once that talent is found, the rest of the player must then be discovered. Are the grades right, is the character a good fit, is the effort where it needs to be in all things?

The answers must all be in the affirmative in order to fit what Day and Ohio State are looking for.

Those first impressions, however, have a way of lasting.

On a recruiting trip to Texas in 2017 to get a look at quarterback Matthew Baldwin, Ryan Day also caught his first glimpse of Garrett Wilson.

“I was watching Matthew Baldwin, so I went down to watch Matthew throw, and I see this wide receiver drill going on, and I see a wide receiver drill a guy and then drive — I told his dad this story — drive a guy into one of the trees and just start yelling and barking at him,” Day recounted back in December.

“And I said, ‘Who is this kid?’ And they said, ‘That’s Garrett Wilson.’ I said, ‘That’s Garrett Wilson, the one who grew up in Dublin?’ They said, ‘Yeah.’ And then from then on, I just followed him really, really closely, studied his film, got to know him. Hank Carter down there is one of the more talented coaches in all of America. He had nothing but great things to say about him, and then his film spoke for itself. As talented a young man as I’ve been around in terms of ball skills, speed, changing direction. He could be a Division I basketball player if he wanted to be.”

The fact that Day noticed Wilson’s effort before his ball skills could be an indicator of things to come. For everything that Wilson can do when the ball is headed his way, it is telling that Day’s first impression of him came from a blocking assignment.

And with all of this information at his disposal, and getting to see Wilson work out first hand this winter, nothing he has seen to this point has him doubting any of the information he was given or has gathered himself.

Which begs the question of just how good Garrett Wilson is as a receiver prospect.

Morning Constitutional: What Is a Typical Day Like For An OSU Freshman?

“Your workout can be anywhere from 6 to 10 in the morning,” receiver Garrett Wilson explained recently. “So this morning we had the 6 a.m. workout, we were all here at least probably 5:30. Get some breakfast, head to the workout, and the breakfasts are mandatory so you can’t not eat. Then once you go through the workouts it’s usually about two hours, hour and a half, and you get some more food after that. Head back to the dorm, hopefully if you have time after that you take a nap. If you have one of the earlier workouts, you usually can take a nap before your first class.”

Naps are at a premium, just as in any walk of life, provided there is time for one.

Of course, the days are so long that the nights become less appealing. It keeps the focus where it needs to be for young athletes, even if it sounds a little bit less than fun.

At this level, however, embracing the hardships is necessary if a player is going to get to where he wants to be.

“Nah, I love it,” Wilson said. “I mean, this is what I dreamed of growing up, and I mean it’s here now. It didn’t seem real to start, but it’s awesome.”

Baldwin, working with the No. 2 offense, hit 20-of-36 throws for 246 yards with two touchdowns and two picks. One of his touchdown throws was actually a better catch, hauled in by Ohio State’s other impact addition in 5-star wide receiver Garrett Wilson. Again, it was the spring game, but it would be a modest surprise if the freshman from Austin catches less than 50 passes in 2019.
