WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba (2022 Rose Bowl MVP, Seattle Seahawks)

"I'm coming with something to prove!" Smith-Njigba wrote when he posted the video of the catch to his personal Twitter. "Believe that."

All week, that's what Smith-Njigba did, standing out at The Opening finals, an invite-only event for the best recruits in the country. In 7on7 play he had 23 catches and four touchdowns, according to 247Sports, the best among all receivers and tight ends.

The craziest thing about Smith-Njigba's performance: it almost didn't happen.
After the state 7on7 tournament, Smith-Njigba and his family got on a plane and flew to Charleston, where his brother, Canaan, plays for the RiverDogs, the single-A affiliate for the New York Yankees.

Once he landed in Charleston, Smith-Njigba said he got a phone call from Ronny Torres, the director of player personnel for The Opening. They didn't have a spot previously for Smith-Njigba, but now they did. Smith-Njigba said he didn't even leave the airport.
After almost not being invited to The Opening, Smith-Njigba - an Ohio State pledge who caught 97 passes for 1,828 yards and 20 touchdowns last year - is leaving as confident as ever.

"Going against the best defensive backs in the nation and you're just doing your thing, it builds confidence going into the season and going into Ohio State," he said.

JAXON SMITH-NJIGBA
Like Fleming, Jaxon Smith-Njigba is putting together a career of video game numbers at Rockwall High School. As a sophomore in 2017, he posted 83 catches for 1,328 yards and nine touchdowns. Then in 2018, he topped those numbers with 96 receptions for 1,819 yards and 20 touchdowns. The sky's the limit for Smith-Njigba in 2019 as he remains one of the most physical wideouts in the country.

First Game: vs. Highland Park, Aug. 30

Game to Watch: at Longview, Sept. 27

Longview is coming off of a state title in 2018, but it only beat Rockwall by seven points. It will surely be a shootout, as No. 4 dual-threat quarterback Haynes King and Smith-Njigba will be battling with powerhouse offenses.
