BUCS' MILLION DOLLAR MAN
Joey Galloway remains a nemesis to Saints
By LARRY HOLDER
[email protected]

Tom Benson's title might read "owner of the New Orleans Saints."

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Joey Galloway might have a stake of Saints ownership on the field.

The speedy veteran has regularly torched the Saints' secondary twice a year for the past few seasons. Galloway, in seven career meetings, has 31 catches for 612 yards with nine touchdowns and a punt return for a score.

Bucs coach Jon Gruden said without Galloway's presence, he's not sure how successful this season would have turned out.

"He's a guy that just went over the 10,000 yard plateau in his NFL career," Gruden said. "He's had two serious knee injuries and a horrific groin injury in 2004. For him to overcome those three injuries at this stage in his career and still play with the speed and precision is something I'm very, very impressed with. We're going to need him to win another game. He's certainly a guy we're going to use as much as we can."

Galloway Has Shot At Pro Bowl
The Tampa Tribune
Published: December 13, 2007

TAMPA - Thirteen seasons and more than 10,000 yards later, Joey Galloway still doesn't regard a paid trip to Hawaii as validation of an accomplished NFL career.

Tampa Bay's 36-year-old WR has never made a Pro Bowl appearance, but Galloway would appear to have a credible shot at the NFC squad this year, with an average of 17.8 yards per reception that tops all players with at least 35 catches.

"It wouldn't mean as much as a Super Bowl," Galloway said of his Pro Bowl chances. "Playoff are more important than other stuff I can't control. It Pro Bowl is recognition, but if I wanted recognition, I'd probably talk more about myself. Winning games is really what matters."

Bucs coach Jon Gruden doesn't mind talking about Galloway, whose career average of 15.79 yards per catch leads all active players.

"Guys don't come on this planet like Galloway very often," Gruden said. "Hopefully, he makes it. Hopefully, our voters out there will head to the computer and type his name in there, because he is one heck of a football player. I'll tell you that."

Galloway is only 22 yards from his sixth 1,000-yard season, and he is the only NFL player with eight catches of 40 or more yards this year.

Galloway Has Shot At Pro Bowl

Gruden touts Galloway for Pro Bowl

TAMPA - Fan voting for the Pro Bowl ended this week, and one player who figures to be a long shot based on early returns is Bucs receiver Joey Galloway.

It's a familiar feeling for Galloway. The 36-year-old in his 13th season has never been to a Pro Bowl despite 10,536 career yards and five 1,000-yard seasons.

He needs just 22 to make 2007 his third consecutive 1,000-yard campaign.

So why no love for Galloway? No one seems sure.

"He's had some physical setbacks," coach Jon Gruden said Wednesdayof some injury-plagued seasons. "He hasn't had a quarterback of any consistency. Guys don't come on this planet like Galloway very often. Hopefully ... our voters went to the computer and typed his name in because he is one heck of a football player."

The Pro Bowl, which also takes into account voting by coaches and players, is not the end-all, be-all, Galloway said.

It doesn't mean "as much as a Super Bowl," he said. "Playoffs are more important. That other stuff I can't control. It is recognition. But if I wanted recognition, I would probably talk more about myself."

Galloway is the oldest receiver among the league's top 15 in yards, tied for 10th with New Orleans' Marques Colston at 978.

Galloway shies away from self-recognition

TAMPA ? Joey Galloway, the gray in his goatee glistening in the camera lights, grinned when asked what a Pro Bowl spot would mean to him.

"Not as much as a Super Bowl," the 36-year-old Tampa Bay Buccaneers' wide receiver said. "Playoffs are more important. That other stuff is stuff I can't control, and I'm not going to worry about it.

"It is recognition. If I wanted recognition, I would probably talk more about myself. It doesn't matter a whole lot."

Indeed, Galloway keeps his interview sessions with the media short. Sometimes, he avoids the media altogether, but he did speak for a few minutes Wednesday.

Galloway has caught 55 passes for 978 yards and six touchdowns this season. His 17.8-yards-per-catch average leads the NFL among players who qualify for the leader list. He ranks 10th in receiving yardage.

In his 13th season, Galloway never has made a Pro Bowl team, despite posting five ? and almost six ? 1,000-yard seasons.

"I've said this before, and this is just my opinion," Bucs coach Jon Gruden said. "He's had some physical setbacks, and he hasn't had a quarterback, really, of any consistency.

"Guys don't come on this planet like Galloway very often."

Gruden concerned about Galloway

Jon Gruden says receiver Joey Galloway (shoulder) is doubtful for Sunday's regular-season finale against Carolina and added that he was "concerned" about Galloway's status going forward, too. But don't lose sleep over Galloway possibly missing the first-round playoff game against the Giants next weekend. Frankly, this sounds like a bit of drama from Gruden, who probably never intended to play Galloway against Carolina, anyway. Still, the coach is sticking to his story.

JG sure has shown a propensity for coming back strongly from injuries so hopefully, even if Chucky is telling the truth, Joey will be back for the playoffs. I just love his intensity, abilities and love for all things tOSU.

Galloway Healthy, Ready To Go Versus Giants
By: Scott Reynolds
January 3, 2008

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Joey Galloway, who was bothered by a shoulder injury over the past game and a half, practiced on Thursday and declared himself "good ? ready to go" against the New York Giants. Galloway, who is still looking for his first career playoff victory, sounds off on the Giants defense.

New York will be relying on its dangerous front four to get pressure on Tampa Bay quarterback Jeff Garcia, but the Giants will also be mixing up their looks defensively with a myriad of blitzes. The test for Tampa Bay, according to wide receiver Joey Galloway, will be to pick up the blitzes and protect Garcia. The reward for passing the test? Perhaps a big play from Galloway in one-on-one coverage.

"They are a tough defense and you have to protect your quarterback," Galloway said. "They fly around and give you a bunch of different looks you have to prepare for.

"We hope to pick up their blitzes. We hope to be prepared. If we can stop them from getting to our quarterback then it will give us half a chance [to hit some big plays against single coverage]."

Galloway, who has missed the last game and a half due to an injured left shoulder, pronounced himself "good - ready to go" on Thursday, a day in which he returned to practice. Galloway missed Wednesday's practice, but the 36-year old receiver has not practiced on Wednesdays all season.

Success in postseason eludes Bucs' Galloway
Despite his regular-season numbers, the Bucs wide receiver is 0-3 going into Sunday's playoff game.

TAMPA - Joey Galloway's playoff media opportunity lasted about as long as it takes the Tampa Bay wide receiver to score on one of his big plays. Then again, when it comes to postseason experience, Galloway doesn't have a whole lot to talk about.

Especially when it comes to winning.

"I'm pretty excited to be in the playoffs again," the Buccaneers speedster said during a two-minute interview session at his locker. "It hasn't happened much in my career."
Three times. Three games. Three losses.

That's Galloway's playoff resume.

Since entering the league as a first-round draft pick -- the eighth overall selection in 1995 -- Galloway has played in one playoff game with each of the three teams for which he has suited up. He lost with Seattle, lost with Dallas and lost two years ago with Tampa Bay, the last time the Bucs reached the postseason.

"He's due," teammate/wideout Michael Clayton said.

The back of Galloway's football card is too impressive to be so void of the success that athletes so often are measured by.

Galloway's 669 career receptions rank 13th among active players while his 77 touchdowns rate fifth behind a quartet -- Terrell Owens (129), Randy Moss (124), Marvin Harrison (123) and Isaac Bruce (84) -- likely headed for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

His career average of 15.8 yards per catch ranks first among all active players with 500 or more receptions. In 2007, Galloway caught 57 passes for 1,014 yards and six touchdowns, with his 17.8-yard average tops in the league among 1,000-yard receivers.

Final Thoughts From Tampa
Posted By Anwar S. Richardson at Jan 06, 2008

After taking a 7-0 lead, Tampa Bay struggled heavily and was defeated by the New York Giants, 24-14, in the NFC Wild Card game.

After doing a little more research, officials say Tampa Bay WR Joey Galloway left the game early because of a shoulder injury. What is interesting about that is most players immediately walk into the locker room after their injury, but with 5:37 remaining, Galloway was still on the sidelines with a towel over his head and watching Tampa Bay?s offense. Then at 3:16, Galloway walked off the field into the locker room.

I spoke with Galloway after the game outside of Tampa Bay?s locker room and he declined to comment about leaving early. He carried a garment bag over his shoulder as he walked away.

Bucs coach Jon Gruden did say he and Galloway had a disagreement on the sidelines, but would not elaborate about what happened.

Galloway: Buckeyes Will Win
The Tampa Tribune
Published: January 7, 2008

TAMPA - Bucs receiver Joey Galloway has spent more years engaging in systematic activities than making radical statements.

Galloway spent months with his business partner creating original smoothies before opening Clearwater's Smoothie Junction Nutrition Outlet in September. He worked several months to build an elaborate koi pond in his back yard. Galloway is equally meticulous when it comes to making personnel decisions as part-owner of the Columbus Destroyers Arena Football League team.

However, when it came to predicting who would win tonight's BCS Championship Game between Ohio State, his alma mater, and LSU, teammate Michael Clayton's former squad, he had no problem predicting a winner.

"We'll win. I'll go with 32-20," Galloway said.

Galloway's shoulder repaired
Bucs receiver Joey Galloway had successful surgery Wednesday to repair his shoulder injury, according to general manager Bruce Allen.

PHOENIX - Bucs receiver Joey Galloway had successful surgery Wednesday to repair his shoulder injury, according to general manager Bruce Allen.

Galloway caught just one pass in the Bucs' 24-14 loss to the Giants in the NFC wild-card game before being forced to leave late in the fourth quarter.

Allen, who would not provide details of the injury, said the surgery will not prevent Galloway from participating in the offseason workout program that begins in March.

"I know what it is, but I won't give it to you," Allen said. "He should be fine."

Galloway Speaks
Contributed by Mike Cobb - Posted: June 5, 2008

Tampa Bay wide receiver Joey Galloway said one of the hardest things he had to deal with is being injured before the Buccaneers' NFC wild card playoff loss to the New York Giants and not being able to go.

Galloway suffered a left shoulder injury in the first half of a 21-19 loss at San Francisco in the next to the last regular-season game of the season. He missed the following game against Carolina before trying to play against the Giants.

"It one of those things that is difficult to explain," Galloway said of his frustration. "To go into the biggest game of my career and not be able to go the way I wanted to is kinda hard to put into words. To have it end the way it did is tough to explain. But that is one of those things is part of the game you sort of have to deal with it and move on.

"I knew it wasn't going to be good leading up to the game," he said. "I knew that. It was a matter of just how good it was going to be. You come into the game you try to give everything you have."

It wasn't good. After leading the Bucs in receiving, Galloway had just one catch for nine yards in the contest against the Giants.

He said the surgery was successful and is working himself back into shape in preparation for training camp in July. He's being held back in the organized team workouts but expects to be full go by training camp.

"We're all pretty excited right now," he said. "I think we're coming off a pretty solid season, of course we wanted to go a little forward than we did. I think at the beginning of last season if someone would have said we would make the playoffs everyone would be surprised by that. Well, we did it and now we need to build on that."

The Ledger

Galloway will turn 37 in November. Not many receivers play at his age, let alone produce as highly as he has in their mid-30's. Galloway became the first Buccaneer to produce three 1,000-yard seasons. Last year, Galloway made 57 receptions for 1,014 yards and six touchdowns. Galloway is fifth in Buccaneer history with 29 total touchdowns, and his 28 touchdown receptions are third in team history. With seven touchdowns in 2008, Galloway will be the team's all-time leader in touchdown receptions. The savvy veteran did not have a reason for his staying power in the NFL, and why he hasn't hit a wall in his production.

"I don't know to be honest with you because I haven't been faced with it yet," said Galloway. "I can't say I avoided it because I don't pay attention to it. The only time my age comes up is when [the media] brings it up. There's a certain amount of aches and pains that go along with playing this many years in the NFL, other than that I don't look at it as I'm trying to accomplish something that's never been done before. I get up and go to work everyday like I always have. As long as I continue to do that then I haven't faced that wall yet, if I do then I'll let you know.

"Number one I've been blessed. I've done a pretty good job of taking care of myself. I work extremely hard in keeping my speed and strength in certain times of year. Right now is where I will hone in on where I want to be when I go to camp, and that's just part of what I do. It's my job and it is what I've always done."

Galloway Declares Himself 'Ready To Go'

The Tampa Tribune

Published: June 6, 2008

TAMPA - Joey Galloway isn't seeking sympathy, just a little understanding.

The last time Bucs fans saw the game-breaking wide receiver on the sidelines, Galloway and Coach Jon Gruden appeared to be involved in a heated conversation during the late stages of Tampa Bay's 24-14 playoff loss against the Giants.

Thursday, the 36-year-old speedster declared himself fully recovered from offseason surgery to repair a left shoulder injury that rendered him ineffective and frustrated in that elimination game.

"It's fine, it's ready to go," Galloway said. "I have a lot of confidence in our medical staff here. It was pretty smooth and the rehab was pretty smooth."

Galloway injured his left shoulder at San Francisco on Dec. 23 and was inactive in the regular-season finale against Carolina.

He was limited to one catch for 9 yards in a playoff setback that ended Tampa Bay's season at 9-8 and dropped Galloway to 0-4 in the playoffs.

"A lot of people saw the exchange between me and Coach at the end of the game and sort of made that into something between me and him - when really it was something between me and myself," Galloway said. "I was disappointed in the way it ended. To have to go into the biggest game of my career and not be able to go the way I wanted to is sort of hard to put into words."

Following surgery to repair some tearing in the labrum and rotator cuff, he is eager to defend the NFC South title.

"We're all pretty excited right now," he said. "We're coming off a pretty solid season and we need to build on that."

Although Jeff Garcia is bristling about his current contract, Tampa Bay's starting quarterback continues to participate in the offseason program at the team facility.

"We all understand the business of the game," Galloway said. "As much as you see in the papers about what he's saying, Jeff's out here working as hard as anyone, so it hasn't disrupted anything we've done on the field. We know he's a winner, how badly he wants to win."

What if Garcia stages a holdout at training camp?

"We would be disappointed if he's not there, but we would understand if he's not there," Galloway said.
