WR Ray Small (official thread)

I would like to see his film?Does he look like more of an offensive weapon ala Ted Ginn Jr. , or could he be the true lockdown Corner that we've been looking for?
Most of his film he was offense, but the plays when he was on defense it looked like he was at a safety position, playing about 8 yds. off the los and making some nice hit.

I don't know how to describe it but once he is moving(not quite the acceleration as Teddy he has great vision and is very quick in and out of his cuts. If there is a seam he gets through it.

Also did a nice job of running routes and catching the ball in traffic.

I think he is at the top of my list for skill players.

So do u think that he is worthy of a top 100 ranking, top 50 ranking, or dare I say 5* top 25 talent?
I would put him in a top100 ranking as I don't think these videos showed enough of his ability as a DB. He was a speed freak, but his small stature will probably hurt his rating. Also, when in full stride he seemed to make cuts and jukes effortlessly, but it seemed to take him a long time to change directions (ie run a sweep, slow down, turn around and run around the other way)... but he looked real dangerous on offense. I think TG Sr said he thought he'd be an offensive player in college.

Cleveland Glenville is home to one of the state's most exciting players in ATH Ray Small. Small can play any number of positions well and is electrifying on the field. He's the complete package, which is what we have for you today as we continue with our Ohio High Top 100 countdown -- Duane Long's capsule on Small, a new article on Small, and a video interview conducted this past weekend in which Small talks about his favorite schools.
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
I think that says it all...he is listed as having offers from Ohio State, USC, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Iowa.

Ray says his decision is basically between his childhood favorite USC and tOSU. He loves the speed at USC but says tOSU has his former teammates, Columbus is his hometown, and Coach Tressel is his "dude." Ray plans to take all of his visits and then announce on NLOID or at the Army AA Game if he is selected.

Eh, he's probably never heard of Teddy Ginn and Freddie Lenix...

Don't forget about Jamario. I think when all is said and done Small is a Buckeye. Those comments about the speed thing just may be to say something nice about USC. However, in the end, he's got his friends in CBus just awaiting for his arrival.

Here's to hoping my assumption is correct.

Just saw his video from yesterday.

Small says his top 4 are USC, Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State.

Most likely will be a Buckeye in the end. Couple of reasons.

a) OSU is the hometown school

b) lots of high school teammates at OSU; Troy Smith, Ted Ginn, Donte Whitner, and Jamario O'Neal (if I recall correctly that is all but there could be more)

Watching his film I think he could play DB or WR easily. Small has good hips, pretty good size, and lots of speed. Has very good speed and a level below Ted Ginn. I think he will end up being a mid to high 4* Top 100 kid with a shot at a top 50 ranking.

These are his measurables from the Army All-American Combine in San Antonio for the top underclassmen in the country.

<table style="border-top: 1px solid rgb(192, 192, 192); border-left: 1px solid rgb(192, 192, 192); border-right: 1px solid rgb(192, 192, 192);" border="0" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0" width="100%"> <tbody><tr><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">Location: </td><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">San Antonio</td></tr> <tr><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">Height: </td><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">5-11</td></tr> <tr><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">Weight: </td><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">170</td></tr> <tr><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">40-Yard Dash: </td><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">4.49</td></tr> <tr><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">Short Shuttle: </td><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">4.25</td></tr> <tr><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">Vertical Jump: </td><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">32.5"</td></tr> <tr><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">3-Cone: </td><td style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(227, 227, 227);" width="50%">7.34</td></tr> </tbody> </table>

Definetly has good measurables. That 40 was electronic and that is blazing. Hand timed that's a sub 4.4-40 easy and the surface they run at that AA combine is considered a slow surface. Shuttle time is good as well. I think he projects better as a CB than WR. I don't think he is anywhere near as dangerous with the ball in his hands as Ginn was. Think Small would make a great CB. He could actually play both ways- certainly has enough athleticism to do so.
