'PROGRAM GUYS': PARRIS CAMPBELL, TERRY MCLAURIN DOING ALL OF THE LITTLE THINGS FOR OHIO STATE
Every Monday, when Urban Meyer takes the podium for his weekly press conference, Ohio State’s head coach lists the top performers from his team’s previous game.
You know the names. J.T. Barrett, Raekwon McMillan, Curtis Samuel, Gareon Conley. There are others, too, at times, but there is usually a core of four or five names listed every single week.
They’re the best players on the team, so this is far from abnormal.
But there is also a pair of offensive players that often sneak onto the list Meyer rattles off. A pair of guys who maybe Ohio State fans wouldn’t expect to be named as top performers — ‘champions,’ as the Buckeyes call them.
Wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Parris Campbell always seem to earn praise from Meyer, but perhaps not for the same reasons as those other players.
“Parris Campbell is one of our most valuable players just because of his value in the special teams,” Meyer said Monday. “I mean, he makes tackles on kickoff, he is one of the best gunners in the country. … A lot of respect for Parris.”
“Terry McLaurin is also a program guy,” Meyer continued. “Very valuable player for us.”

Terry McLaurin Passed on Easy to Do Things the Buckeye Way
When players come to Ohio State, they know it will not be an easy path to playing time. Many players don’t see the field on game days until a few years after arriving to the program because of so much talent and competition in each unit.
For redshirt sophomore wide receiver Terry McLaurin, that challenge was what he looked for coming out of high school. An Indianapolis native, McLaurin knew that if he came to Ohio State, his path to the field wouldn’t be as quick as if he stayed home and went to in-state programs like Purdue or Indiana.
According to head coach Urban Meyer, McLaurin’s recruitment is an interesting story.
“He came to camp and he wasn’t quite good enough in our opinion and I said, ‘Here’s what you need to work on exactly,’” Meyer explained. “His top end of routes and his ball skills, hand-eye, just the catching a football in traffic.”
McLaurin took what Meyer said to heart and used that motivation to make himself a better player. But it wasn’t easy.
“That’s kind of challenging because you’re coming from high school and you’re getting interest from all of these places and then you come to a place like Ohio State, which is top tier,” he explained, “and when he asked me to come back, he asked me to catch 200 balls a day and I did that and came back and that really made me a better player.”

OHIO STATE WIDE RECEIVER TERRY MCLAURIN EXCITED FOR SECOND CHANCE TO PLAY FOR KEVIN WILSON
A member of the 2014 recruiting class, wide receiver Terry McLaurin was the third-best wide receiver in the state of Indiana, according to 247Sports. It was only natural that the Hoosiers would recruit him hard.
A 6-foot-1, 204 pound wide receiver, McLaurin was naturally drawn to Kevin Wilson's Hoosier squad, with its success throwing the football. In 2013, McLaurin's last high school football season, Indiana led the Big Ten in passing offense (306.7 yards per game) and was second in the conference in total yards per contest (508.5) behind only Ohio State (511.9).
McLaurin, now a redshirt junior at Ohio State, said Wilson's recruiting pitch at Indiana was simple.
"Come catch a lot of footballs and be a leading receiver (for Indiana)," McLaurin said Monday when describing Wilson's recruiting pitch from a few years ago. "Play for your home state and be a part of the Crimson and their tradition. He was a good dude and he was honest, but when Ohio State came calling, I couldn't walk away from that."
Instead of traveling just more than an hour south of his hometown to play for Wilson, McLaurin landed at Ohio State, where his career has yet to take off.
After redshirting the 2014 season, McLaurin played mostly special teams in 2015. He recorded his first catch in the 2016 season opener against Bowling Green, but managed just 11 catches for the year.
When it was announced this offseason that Wilson was going to join Urban Meyer's staff at Ohio State, McLaurin immediately did his research on the coach that had tried to keep him in his home state of Indiana.
"I knew he put his athletes in a position to make plays, but I went back and did my research," McLaurin said. "His top three or four wide receivers the last three or four years he was at Indiana caught 60-plus balls. We have really good athletes here so we are just hoping that he can bring that from Indiana to Ohio State."

Urban Meyer is excited by the playmakers potential for Ohio State’s offense
- In the game, McLaurin picked up two 15-yard penalties on the same play, but still graded a champion, and Meyer explained that it was a head coach’s decision, “because I like Terry.”
- Meyer added that they don’t condone those types of things, but that he had a talk with McLaurin about it. He also mentioned that the receiver had been the victim of a pretty nasty cheap shot earlier in the game, and that stuck with him longer than it probably should have.

Meyer should have explained: "There was not one goddamned thing wrong with that hit. We teach our kids to go hard from A to B for 4 to 6 seconds and that's exactly what Terry did."
