Doug Nester (OL Virginia Tech, transfer to West Virginia)

The most meaningful comment I've heard lately was by Steve Wiltfong on the BN Morning 5 podcast. Wiltfong was not encouraging, and he's usually got pretty good G2.
Things were extremely discouraging, then not quite as bad, then maybe promising, then pretty promising, then uncertain but not done either way (and now whatever we'll start hearing with his weekend festivities). All of that is in the last 3-4 weeks.

Man, I can’t think of a player in a while that seems less excited to be a Buckeye if he does in fact sign. Makes you wonder if he will be fully invested.

Hope I’m wrong but it just doesn’t feel quite right. I mean, tOSU has a very favorable depth chart, puts guys in the league and has tons of advantages off the field. I know Day is new and Stud has some uncertainty but everything collectively has to look good compared to Penn St and VaTech.

Plus C-Bus is closer to home and he’s been a verbal such a long time. Yet despite that he’s still searching? I’m less than enthused regardless of whether he signs honestly. I guess he’s just doing his due diligence but dang man........what gives? I hope he’s not a Rashan Gary type looking for a chill vibe.

Apparent concern about the long term stability of his position coach at Ohio State.

+

Penn State being another major suitor.

It’s not hard to add things up and understand what is happening.

If I’m not spelling it out enough, Penn State is doing a massive amount of negative recruiting around Studrawa’s future at Ohio State and Nester is deciding how much that matters to him.

Regarding the ups and downs:

Huge valley in optimism during the height of the coaching transition/uncertainty, rise in optimism when Studrawa was retained, lingering concern and uncertainty around Studrawa’s future at Ohio State beyond a year.

Pure speculation on my part, but...

He does see the 20 guys... incl starters... in the transfer portal from PSU ?

That goes one of two ways. He could look at that and wonder what is going on in Slappy Valley where all these players want out. Or he can look at it and think that there is tons of departing depth up for grabs. And methinks part of their pitch is negative recruiting and dishonesty, which leads me to think that they are promising something to him that maybe they really can’t promise. Maybe promises have been made in the past and not kept, leading to that large transfer portal number.

I guess.... i only see 1 way to read that kind of mass exodus.
But then i only see 1 way to read the revolving door of corp officers at TSLA and the cult is going strong there too.

Who knows what's going on, but I'm with you on that. Even if there is concern about Stud being around for more than a year, one has to weigh it out. What I'd be thinking, and yeah... I'm 48, I'm a man... is, "If my position coach is replaced in a year, do I have more confidence in tOSU to replace him with someone who's going to get me to the league than I have in Franklin being able to fix whatever bad stuff is going on in the locker room that is causing this exodus?"

I'm just confused as to why keeping Stud is the desired result.

Day spent so much time revamping the defensive staff and trying to hold this '19 class together that I truly feel he just ran out of time or didn't have a better option than Stud for 2019 when it came time to announce his final staff. The longer the indecision about Stud for next year, even more doubt creeps in. Most position coaches are yr-to-yr anyway, right (asking a friend)?

So, he's going to give him one more yr to see if he can figure it out and it also gives Day an entire yr to court other options as well. I do think it's going to hinder OL recruiting until it gets settled, which is not good bc it's probaly position of need #1 as far as numbers/depth/talent that needs restocked.

Nester would be a really tough loss...OL is a giant concern and while getting Jonah Jackson as a transfer would alleviate the loss if it comes to fruition, we still really need Nester in this class. Fingers crossed. Little weird on the VT crystal ball though, I thought they were a distant 3rd behind OSU and PSU. Visit must have changed that.

Seems like he is looking for every reason not to go to Ohio State. I don’t get it, either. He’d have the opportunity to play early. This one stings because, if I remember correctly, Nester was the reason Darnell Wright backed off of Ohio State. Apparently those two didn’t like each other. Ohio State chose Nester and now it seems he’s going elsewhere. If so, best of luck. Do what’s best for you, young man.
