Okay, say someone DID tell Coach Tressel prior to OSU's public release of the story. What if Coach Tressel then had went to the OSU compliance department who initially found nothing.

Would there be anything wrong with this?

OR...

What if Tressel passed the info along and it was squashed/sat on by somebody else?

A lot of questions are left unanswered by this story.

I don't think so as long as there is a record of it.

Lets hope to God this is how it plays out.

One problem with that line of thinking... That would mean thein they would have asked Pryor if this is true and that would mean he lied to Tressel's face. Me thinks the NCAA would not like this AT ALL.

Basically it would deflect blame to the players again, and then the media would be all over them for letting them play in the Sugar Bowl, blah blah blah stuff all over again.

If they have proof, I agree with others. Not only is it an NCAA violation, but it also means that, through lying to GS, JT indirectly lied to Gee and the BoT. I can't imagine that he'll have much firepower in his corner. It's been awhile since I've been anyone's employee, but if I lied to my higher ups about anything much less a matter that would call into question the very integrity of my area of responsibility, well.....?

I really hope this is an unsubstantiated, throw it at the wall and see what sticks situation. Otherwise, a lot of avatars are going to need changing.

As others have said, if this was most any other news organization breaking this, I wouldn't be too worried The guys are Yahoo are not a bunch of hacks. Very concerning news. Really hope this is not the beginning of the end...
Whatever comes of this "investigation," it won't be "the beginning of the end." Let's not get apocalyptic, here.

I'm not suggesting this isn't somewhat serious, but isn't Bruce Pearl still coaching in Knoxville?

Well it depends on who the concerned source is. If the concerned source was just some guy off the street I wouldn't be surprised if Tressel was being kind and said we'll look into it and did a quick fly by with Smith and the guys and thought nothing of it. If it was someone with a little more clout this could get ugly.

I'm just guessing that it's true...I'm guessing that if he kne he probably attempted to talk to the players about it. But with the pressure here it's probably difficult to get information like this and turn yourself in.

Possible, but there aren't too many layers above JT. I don't see Gee's office or the board squelching it. That leaves just one layer in between.

Im assuming this is the best way it goes down for OSU:

Guy X goes to Coach Tressel and informs him of player wrong doing.

Coach Tressel then informs the compliance department. The department finds nothing, no need for any public news at this point.

Several months later more information comes out Pryor & Co., specifically. Compliance department researches this, finds the information to be true. Gives public release, gives relase to the NCAA.

That IMO is the best way it can go down IF true.

Like what was said before...this is not the SEC.....somebody's head is going to roll....at this point we don't know who....(if true)....

Except we already knew they lied.

same reporter that worked on the USC outing and is currently breaking the oregon stuff

Well to be fair neither of those stories were particularly groundbreaking, everyone knew there was some fishy stuff going on around USC and Oregon..and here they are breaking a story about something that was already unveiled months ago.

If you dug around Oregon and USC for any particular amount of time you were going to find something. The big difference between this case and the 2 aforementioned is the paper evidence and whether they'll be able to find it. Even if this was theoretically true the NCAA at the very least is going to have to get this "concerned party" to admit to going to Tressel with the information.

You have to ask yourself what "concerned party" has both legitimate access to Jim Tressel and would have knowledge of Pryor and Co selling their [Mark May]? Here's the scenarios as I see it:

Scenario #1: Someone on the team (at the time). Guy finds out from one of the Tat 5 about the deal (Anonymous Player: "Hey man, where'd you get the hook up on your Tat", Tat 5 participant: "I actually decided to sell a rare piece of memorabilia for about 1/3rd of it's actual worth in exchange for a body art that I could get just about anywhere..") Anonymous player notifies Tress (Tressel: "I'm concerned about this and will look into it). Now this person might have shot their mouth off a little bit, enough for a reporter to catch on to a rumor...but do you really think they are going to talk to the NCAA about it?

Scenario #2: Last April during a trip to visit/conspire with Justin Boren on possible ways to continue to undermine the regime of one Richard "Michigan Man" Rodriguez, Lloyd Carr stops by said Tattoo parlor (Needed to get some work done on the Bo Tattoo on his right butt cheek). Lloyd is instantly drawn in by the glow of Big Ten championship rings sitting on the mantle (It has been so long after all since he has acquired one). Carr sees the names on the side of the ring and instantly notifies Tressel. Tressel either A) Is still clueless on how to use text messaging and was unable to get Lloyd's message (A telegram would have sufficed Lloyd) or B) Dismisses the cheating accusation with the other 50 that come out of Ann Arbor every weekend.

Scenario #3: NCAA violations are uncovered and writer desperate for attention spends 2 months coming up with a semi convincing story to throw on top of them, because really this [Mark May] is just too easy to make up.

That's the point I know I at least am trying to make.

Winning be damned, there should NEVER be a Bruce Pearl at OSU and if Tressel lied about this at all he's no better than Pearl. I don't give a shit if every team in the SEC, Oregon and USC cheat until we simply cannot compete, I'd rather have my honor.

Because Pearl's in the SEC. I absolutely can't see Gee and BoT letting this slide, particularly as the capital campaign ramps up. Don't forget that Wexner isn't exactly the biggest athletic supporter out there. If true, this is going to be a hanging offense.
