I, too, have an old first gen that we took apart - wasn't nearly as bad as replacing my iPhone screen - but didn't have the heat gun - tons of resin all over the chipset, do those who have more experience here think a contact cleaner would do the trick or do I need to get the heat gun?

The heat gun isn't to clean anything, it is used to heat up and melt the solder under the chipsets and processors so that they reattach correctly. The probelm with the old units is that the solder starts to melt and shift after extended use. The original fan on those units do not pull enough heat away from the motherboard, so I bought an external USB fan for it after I fixed it so it would run cooler. So far so good.

As far as cleaning anything on the motherboard, I would only use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. If that doesn't work then I would leave it alone. Any strong cleaners may react negatively with the metals/plastics used and you could permenantly damage the unit.
