Youngstown State Garners Fourth-Seed; Hosts James Madison on ESPN2
Youngstown ? The Youngstown State football team, the 2006 Gateway Football Conference Regular-Season Champions, earned the No. 4 seed and will host James Madison in the first round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship, Saturday, Nov. 25, at Stambaugh Stadium, the NCAA announced Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
The Penguins (9-2) earned the Gateway's automatic bid by going 6-1 in league play and are making their 11th appearance in the playoffs and first since 2000.
James Madison (9-2) earned one of eight at-large bids and ranked seventh in the latest SportsNetwork Top 25 poll.
This will be the fourth meeting between Youngstown State and James Madison but the first in the postseason. YSU owns 2-1 advantage in the all-time series. The last time these two schools met was during a the 1992 season when JMU came away with a 52-49 victory at Stambaugh Stadium. YSU defeated the Dukes, 28-21, in 1991 at Stambaugh, and 31-15, in Harrisonburg, Va., in 1990
Youngstown State has won four national titles (1991, 1993, 1994, 1997) and two national runners-up (1992, 1999) and owns a Division I Football Championship playoff record of 23-6.

I was there last time JMU came to Y-town, and I'll be there when the Penguins seek their revenge this Saturday!

An interesting scenario that could play out:
Ohio State wins the national championship (1 game away)
Youngstown State wins the 1-aa national championship (4 games away)

The two teams play each other in the first game of the 2007 season in the horseshoe.

I don't know how likely YSU is to win it all, but I'd love to see both my teams win it all in the same year!

Go Bucks, Go Penguins

I teach at Appalachian State. We've got the #1 seed, so we would play Youngstown State in the Semi-Finals (assuming we both win out). The game will be on our field, so if anyone is coming down, let me know.

I've been hoping that both my teams (IA and IAA) would win National Championships. But your scenario, IA and IAA champs meeting in the following season opener, would also be very cool.

hiney, appalachian state should not be playing youngstown state but ohio state instead, at least according to harley (scum poster):

Thoughts for reasonable Ohio State Fans
:scum: I can totally agree with you guys when you say you beat Michigan which I bleed Maze and Blue. Congrats on your win. You beat us fair and square. However the reason I want a rematch is this. You won the Big Ten Title but you havent won the National Title yet. It shouldnt matter what division you come from to be eligiable to play in the National Championship.

I've got a dog in this fight. Don't overlook them, they can play a little too. Ask Furman, or JMU for that matter.

Yes, we open with you guys. Both of us have beaten both Furman and JMU in the regular season. Don't know that much about you, except that you're dangerous. Should be a good game. Are you coming up? Let me know and we'll arrange to meet somewhere in the stadium.

I've been going to YSU games with my dad since I was 7 years old! Now I'm finishing up my education here, really excited about the game. Got my tickets on the 50 yard line in the east stands, 16 rows from the field :)

I actually live in boardman.. Coach Tressel spoke at my highschool graduation.

Glad to see YSU back in the 1-AA tourney. IIRC, they were screwed out of getting in last year. I grew up in the Youngstown area back when Tressel was there winning championships (and I had the chance to meet him a few times back then), and YSU and Tressel were absolutely HUGE in the area back then (of course, Tressel still is). Everyone in Youngstown knew that Tressel would make the magic happen at OSU too when OSU hired him. Here's to hoping that YSU makes some noise in the tournament this year.

I'm not going up, but I'll be watching on TV. Should be fun, maybe you guys won't blow us out like last year. I'll add some stats later...

4th in passing off. 279.8 YPG
4th in scoring off. 34.8 PPG
QB is 2nd nationally in total offense 325.3YPG
