Youngstown State Penguins (Official Thread)

Does anybody know what Tressel's tendencies were at YSU, in terms of hiring/firing/moving around members of his staff? Did he ever fire an OC or DC to save face after a 3-8-type season? Or did he stay "loyal" and give them chances to improve their performance?

He doesn't do anything to "save face"...he does what he thinks is best for the team, regardless of what others think. His record speaks for itself. If you're looking for a parallel of the 1995 Penguins and the 2004 Buckeyes, or an indicator of what he might do later, or after, this season based on what may have happened nine years ago, you're barking up the wrong tree. Oh yeah, last time I checked, we're not 3-8 yet...

YSU Website said:
He [Tressel] came to Youngstown in 1986 and within two seasons the Penguins were in the NCAA Division I-AA Playoffs. The playoffs, once a dream, became common place for YSU. In his tenure, Youngstown State appeared in the playoffs 10 times and won four national championships.
The first national title came in 1991 and began a run of four straight title-game appearances. The march to the crown in 1991 was magical as the Penguins won eight straight to end the season after a 4-3 start.

He was the Athletics Director at YSU as well as coach.

Are you asking, does he know how to make the changes necessary to turn things around? I would have to say Yes.

Ex-Youngstown St. coach, 93, dies

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Dom Rosselli, the winningest basketball and baseball coach at Youngstown State, has died. He was 93.
The university says Rosselli died Tuesday morning.
Rosselli totaled 1,000 career wins in the two sports over 38 years. He also served as an assistant football coach for 21 years.
Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel said Rosselli will be missed because he affected so many lives. Tressel coached Youngstown State for 15 years before moving to the Buckeyes.
Rosselli is survived by his wife, Connie, four children and several grandchildren.

Cincinnati RBs coach Doug Phillips named as Bo Pelini’s replacement at Youngstown State

Bo Pelini has officially been replaced.

Late last month, Bo Pelini stepped down as the head coach at Youngstown State after five seasons to become the defensive coordinator at LSU. Two weeks later, the FCS program confirmed that Doug Phillips has been named as the replacement for Bo Pelini.

The hiring of Phillips is a homecoming of sorts as he was a graduate assistant at YSU in 1991-92. The Penguins head coach at the time? Jim Tressel, the former Ohio State head coach who is now YSU’s president.

The Penguins have scored 7 points in 8 quarters of football. Their defense hangs in for about 3 quarters but they run out of gas late.

Last week they trailed 15-7 after 3 quarters before losing 25-7. Today they were down 6-0 after 3 quarters before losing 21-0. It's probably going to get worse, too.

The team who beat the Pens last week - mighty North Dakota State - just got their asses kicked by Southern Illinois. Take a guess who the Penguins play next week.

YSU takes their first lead of the season with an opening drive TD vs Southern Illinois, 6-0 (XP blocked). Three plays later they pick off a pass and the offense scores again.

Two TDs in the first quarter after only 1 in the first two games. Did Tressel join the coaches room this week?

Ahh, but the STPC comes up short and it's 12-0.

Youngstown State football sanctioned after agreeing rules were violated under former coach Bo Pelini

Youngstown State football on Tuesday was placed on probation for two years and hit with recruiting sanctions by the NCAA after the school and the association agreed several rules violations were committed under former coach Bo Pelini.

Using the NCAA's negotiated resolution process, the school agreed it failed to monitor its football program when it permitted three staff members to recruit off campus without completing the coaches' certification test for the 2019-20 academic year.

An assistant coach was also found to have recruited a player at a Division II school without knowing he was not in the transfer portal and without notifying the player's school.

The report does not specifically mention Pelini, who was head coach at Youngstown from 2015 to '19, but it does refer to the former head coach who left to become a defensive coordinator at another school. The former Nebraska head coach was the defensive coordinator at LSU until last December.

Youngstown State found that Pelini and two assistants had not taken the certification test required for off-campus recruiting. That resulted in impermissible contacts with 16 prospects and impermissible evaluations of two more.

In addition to probation, Youngstown State was stripped of three official visits during the 2021-22 academic year, given a two-week ban on unofficial visits and all recruiting communication, and had its evaluation days reduced by three.
