Your "WTF?" Stat of the Day

It's not a stat but it's damn funny.... Deadspin

This is a screen grab from Saturday's Utah-Wyoming game. And while a grown man flippin' the bird is usually funny enough on its own, the thing that truly makes this one special is the back-story.

Too much can be made of statistics, but sometimes they can tell an interesting story. Looking back on the 2007 season, and with an eye on what needs to be worked on for 2008, or a positive to build around, here are 30 of the most interesting stats from last season. Some shaped the season, and some are simply, well, fun and interesting.

30. Time of possession: Wisconsin 33:43 ? Opponents 26:16.
29. Penalties: Opponents 99 for 863 yards ? Alabama 59 for 453 yards.
28. Kent State Attendance vs. Buffalo: 2,687 ? Attendance for Kent State. at Ohio State 105,051.
27. Penalties: Opponents 83 for 711 yards ? Army 48 for 375 yards.
26. Punt return average: Kansas State 22.5 yards ? Opponents 6.9 yards.
25. Penalties: LSU 117 for 880 yards ? Opponents 67 for 566 yards.

[...]

10. Rushing yards per game: Opponents 232.2 ? Nebraska 144.4.
9. Sacks: Illinois 40 for 277 yards ? Opponents 16 for 106 yards.
8. Rushing touchdowns: West Virginia 49 ? Opponents 13.
7. First half scoring: Kansas 269 ? Opponents 93.
6. Georgia - Sacks: Georgia 42 for 294 yards ? Opponents 15 for 132 yards.
5. First quarter scoring: Missouri 125 ? Opponents 43.
4. Sacks: Tennessee 34 for 144 yards ? Opponents 4 for 44 yards.
3. Ohio State ? Rushing touchdowns: Ohio State 21 ? Opponents 3.
2. Sacks: Opponents 58 for 415 yards ? Notre Dame 19 for 132 yards.
1. Fourth down conversions: LSU 13 of 16 (81%) ? Opponents 6 of 21 (29%).

IMHO, the biggest "WTF" stat in OSU football is the record for longest play from scrimmage.

In 1942, Gene Fekete had an 89 yard run against Pittsburgh.

Ohio State has never had a play of 90 yards or more from scrimmage (To those who have "corrected" me on this stat in the past; "from scrimmage" means "not including kick/punt/fumble/int returns".)

Fekete did not score on the play.

Beanie came very close to breaking this record against MSU last year, but an MSU defensive back had an angle on him, barely bringing him down. So even if JT doesn't allow Beanie enough carries to break the single-season and single-game records this year; a healthier Beanie still has a good chance at the single-rush record. (Don't count him out for the others just yet, either)
