URBAN MEYER SAYS HE KNEW ABOUT 2009 INCIDENT INVOLVING ZACH SMITH, BUT WAS UNAWARE OF 2015 ALLEGATION

When Ohio State made the decision to fire wide receivers coach Zach Smith on Monday after several allegations of past domestic violence came to the surface, one of the biggest unanswered questions was whether Urban Meyer knew about those allegations.

Meyer answered Tuesday that he knew about some, but not all, of those allegations.

During his press conference at Big Ten Media Days on Tuesday in Chicago, Meyer said he was aware of the incident involving Smith when both were at Florida in 2009. According to a police report obtained by Eleven Warriors, Smith was arrested for battery on a pregnant victim after an altercation with his then-wife, Courtney Smith, who was three months pregnant at the time.

Courtney, however, declined to file charges at the scene, and Meyer decided to stand by Zach, who was a graduate assistant for the Gators at the time.

"In 2009, Zach was an intern," Meyer said. "As I do any time, and I imagine most coaches or people in leadership positions, when you receive a phone call, first thing you do is tell your boss. Let the experts do their jobs. We’re certainly not going to investigate. It came back to me that what was reported wasn’t what actually happened. So Shelley and I actually both got involved with the relationship with that family, and provided counseling, and wanted to help them moving forward."

Meyer said he was unaware, however, of an allegation made against Zach in 2015. According to a police report obtained by Eleven Warriors, Powell Police were dispatched to Zach and Courtney’s home after Courtney reported "that a domestic incident happened last night at her home and that she has been a victim of sustained physical abuse by the suspect." Meyer, however, said he was unable to find any information about that incident after receiving a text message about it on Monday evening.

"I got a text last night that something happened in 2015, and there was nothing," Meyer said.

Both of those allegations surfaced publicly on Monday, three days after Courtney filed a domestic violence protection order against Zach with Delaware Police. That came two days after he appeared in Delaware Municipal Court on a charge of criminal trespassing, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Since his arrival at Ohio State, Meyer has repeatedly said that violence against women is unacceptable for anyone associated with his program. A sign inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center lists three of Meyer’s core values below the word "Decisions": "Honesty," "Treat Women With Respect," and "No Drugs, Stealing, Weapons."

Asked specifically why he fired Smith, Meyer declined to delve into specifics, describing the situation as a "very personal matter."

"It was in the best interest of our team," Meyer said. "It wasn't just my decision, it was a group effort with some of the people that I rely on."

Meyer did say, though, that his core values were related to his decisio

Urban definitely knew. Jason at 11W said they’ve known about the 2015 and 2009 incidents for a while but didn’t run with them because no charges. If they knew, Urban knew. I don’t think it rises to the level of a fireable offense. It forever impacts my opinion of Urban as a person. But then again, I never thought he was good person. I did think that of Jim Tressel - and still do.
So is Urban doubling down on his lies, or is Jason mistaken?

WIDE RECEIVER PARRIS CAMPBELL SPEAKS ON HIS POSITION COACH ZACH SMITH'S TERMINATION

Campbell answered those questions, when asked to NBC4's Jerod Smalley, saying he understands the decision and now the receivers must lean on each other to get through the season.

“Nothing against Coach Smith, he’s been a great coach for me, a great mentor," Campbell told Smalley. "But at the end of the day, my coaches felt there was a decision that needed to be made."

So let me ask you something, when an insider posts a banana about an impending commitment on the recruiting forum do you ever whine like a little girl about them not having the “cojones” to just post what they know? Of course you don’t b/c you’re a big boy who can put 2 & 2 together & appreciate the positive news that’s coming our way. Similar situation here. cdiddy & I were both posting whatever the opposite of a banana is but b/c the implication was negative you chose not to do the math. You could probably handle the truth just chose not to.

I think the writing has been on the wall about coaching for awhile. He recruits well, but those guys haven't performed. Thomas was the only guy he could hang his hat on... but that's all Thomas. It's not as bad as it was when Urban took over, but it's also the weakest link on the offense - probably team.
The tweeting is whatever afaic. People will take a new spin on it in light of the DV stuff.

In any case, I'm still not siding with cdiddy. Either spill beans or don't spill beans. Don't hint at shit for years... or pull nonsense like "you can't handle the truth" :roll1: This isn't PSU, nobody is going to rally around a shitbag... and plenty criticism of Urban inbound too.

Multiple issues going back 10 years screams "for cause" to me.
But the twitter stuff could get saucy... not sure what good telling him to interview elsewhere does either; he's unemployable at this point.
Maybe he can go to Italy with Art Briles.

Yeap. This seemed most obvious with the Ray Rice situation to me.

It's worse than raping children for decades... so... =/

Legally hadn't done anything wrong? Or legally hadn't been held accountable?
Not to try him before the judge and jury... but there's a big difference between those two. And it starts to sound a bit PSU excuse making.

That's fairly common, actually. This discussion was had about Jameis issue and FSU deliberations. In terms of standards for evidence: Criminal > Civil > Work/University/Association/etc.
It has a specific legal term that I can never remember =/

We're talking about years before now... ie he shouldn't have been hired in the first place, or he should have been fired in 2015... nobody is disputing his being fired for cause presently.

That's a fair point. And I guess I beat this dead horse in the PSU thread but it says everything to me that he walked into that room knowing JoePa was going to cut him loose as a Grad assistant. Paterno and McQueary both testified to that fact. And he walks out of that office with a permanent job as a position coach... they bought his silence for 10 years.
Nor was McQ the first incident. Paterno knew exactly what was going on, actively covered it up, and enabled it to continue... for decades... giving Sandusky unfettered access to facilities long after he stopped being a coach.

Not Kuji, but there is a pretty big difference between predicting a likely recruit commitment and railing on a coach for YEARS without providing any semblance of proof or evidence or specifics.

Sparcboxbuck posted this a while back and it's advice Smith could have used many years ago. I removed various items to highlight some points that seem more relevant to this situation.

We should keep in mind that #15 is as likely a possibility in this situation as anything else. Before we go casting judgement on Urban Meyer, he most likely was very aware of the incidents (admittedly from Zach's side) and perhaps felt there was enough doubt to the allegations to side with him. I don't believe for a minute he would have put either the FL or OSU programs at risk just to appease Earle Bruce, nor would Earle have condoned it if there was belief that Zach was a wife beater.

Strong work... digging that one out. I just reread what I wrote and I think it's time to send it to the 16 year old. I imagine that it may mean more now than when I originally wrote it.

You’re right, cdiddy’s ambiguous criticism about Smith over the past couple years seems over the top to the outside eye but when he drops the ‘09 Florida reference & I drop the ‘15 Powell reference it’s probably time to sit down & do the math. Recruiting bananas might be simple addition, 2+2= 4. What we dropped may be multiplication, 7x7= 49. A little more difficult but unless you’re a closeted scUM fan or had that PSU dirtbag that lives down the street craft you a pair of S&G blinders, still not that difficult to figure out.

I posted about 2015 (event prior to ND v. OSU Fiesta Bowl) on Weds. cdiddy posted about 2009 on Thurs. It wasn’t until Mon that the media started reporting about these 2 events. Both cdiddy & I we’re questioned about our posts. Which I get, I don’t post often & cdiddy has a well established fan club. It’s just now the things we posted have been verified & some people (Kuji) are still busting chops when they probably should be laying low.

I won’t post anymore on the subject. I love the site but rarely post b/c I don’t want to clog up threads w/ random opinions & pettiness. Just felt like I needed a little justification in this instance.

Ok, if you only started posting about it less than a week earlier I doubt you are the one people were talking about. Making mention of knowing something when something related happens seems reasonable. Cdiddy on the other hand has been posting for years and the only two things I know about him are he likes high end happy hours and he hates zack smith.
