No, Ohio State isn’t going to recruit Zach Evans

Sometimes in recruiting, it feels like there’s this unseen force trying to bring things together.

Never has that felt more real than the belief that Ohio State and 5-star 2020 running back Zach Evans ought to be a match made in recruiting heaven. The Houston standout, one of the country’s most talented young football players, has been linked to the program at multiple times throughout his recruitment despite never visiting Ohio State. A former Georgia signee, Evans is currently a free agent and is still evaluating his options for next season — though many believe he’s ultimately going to wind up at Florida.

The Buckeyes have already had questions at running back that did not receive an adequate answer during the 2020 cycle. Then on Tuesday, news broke that Master Teague will miss significant time following a leg injury he suffered on Day One of spring practice.

And the head-scratching and bewilderment began anew.

“Will the Buckeyes reach back out to Zach Evans? Why not bring in Zach Evans?”

Those questions are fair considering the needs on the Ohio State roster. But let me be clear for readers and fans who are waiting for something to happen here between the troubled running back and the Buckeyes: It’s not going to happen.

Move on. Ohio State is not going to recruit Zach Evans. He will not be the answer to the Buckeyes running back woes. Is the transfer portal a possibility? Sure, maybe. If it comes down to needing it, the Ohio State staff would be looking for a one-year, plug-and-play-type and not a player who couldn’t stay eligible to play for his high school for numerous reasons over multiple seasons.

Evans would enhance the talent level on the roster and could even start at tailback for Ohio State right away if Ryan Day’s program were willing to take the risk on his off-field maturity issues.

But to be clear: They are not and will not.

Not sure why we wouldn't see about him unless he's a trainwreck. If he doesn't fall in line you could always kick him off the team?

Unfortunately with the issues of Amir Riep and JaShen Wint, character risk kids are a “no go” right now.

OSU has had an outstanding track record the last 5-6 years in terms of off-field behavior (not withstanding an assistant coach in Zach Smith). But due to the incident several weeks ago, there’s zero appetite for risk. None.

Evans situation is still a little murky but it sounds like he was sensitive of giving his cell phone over to the school district based on questionable material that was likely on it.

Imagine being that kid or his family, knowing the depth chart prior to the news on Master, then Master gets hurt, and despite the lofty rankings for Evans tOSU still takes a “hard pass” stance.

Imagine reading the article and knowing countless others have read it too.

OUCH.

Yeah that makes sense... only thing is we said no thanks months before the rape allegation though. Like you said though we just thought there was just too much risk there.

I agree with the overall sentiment, but I think you’re misremembering the part about him giving up his phone. It wasn’t due to questionable stuff, he just didn’t want to follow that team rule.

Can’t put that type of stuff out there without facts. That’s dangerous.

No, there’s a rumor about a reason he didn’t want to hand phone over.

If all this was just about a team rule he broke, he’d be signed right now (not necessarily by OSU). There’s fear the situation could follow him wherever he ends up.....as in, he gets on campus, and at some point is in middle of a legal situation.

uh uh uhhh.. I wanna know the rumor... somebody PM me

It’s just twitter rumors. Not anything to put much stock in.

It’s been widely reported that he refused to give up his phone during a routine curfew check and fought with the coaches because of it. It was the second time he was suspended during the season.

Anything else is unsubstantiated rumors started on twitter.
