Zbikowski and Boxing (Merged)

I think it is $25,000.

That's a pretty fair sum. Methomps point about the irony of how his football fame allows him to earn this money, while a true World Champion like Bloom couldn't get endorsement money for his accomplishments is very well taken.

A promoter could stage a lot of ND-related contests. 42 leprechauns against a lion comes to mind.

  • He was raised to go to Notre Dame. He was raised to be a Catholic. He was raised to do a good thing.

The convergence arrives Saturday night, at not only the mecca of boxing, but also the mecca of sports.
New York. Madison Square Garden.

(AP) </TD><TD width=15> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>A Notre Dame safety boxing there as ... a lark? No. It's much more than that. So much more that you can make the case for this being the boxing story of the year. No, college football story of the year.
No, dare we say, sports story of the year.
Sorry Barry, Jason. We're talking convergence ...

The new Tillman

Tom Zbikowski is the perfect storm that perhaps only a boxing promoter could capitalize on. It's got race. It's got pathos. It's got crossover appeal. A tough white kid from the Chicago suburbs with a -ski at the end of his name.
It's old Notre Dame. It's new HBO. It could be worth a mint to all parties even if Tommy Z never throws another punch after Saturday.
If he's good at boxing, he has a real pro future. Watch out.
The kid started fighting at age 9, has had 90 amateur bouts and can't quite decide which blood sport he likes more -- football or boxing.
"It's hard to say right now," he said.
So what kind of NFL prospect is Tommy Z? He is a third-team All-American safety who might be better as a punt returner. But for all his talents, Zbikowski did play in a secondary that was part of the 14th-worst pass defense in the nation, ranked below winless New Mexico State.

Notre Dame has a football player who is a boxer.... Hmm interesting and ironic

Someone should tell Brett Musburger so he can mention it during a game a sometime....

Anyway Tommy Z should knock out this chump of a guy in the first 3 rounds... Proof in the pudding Notre Dame is better then Ohio State :)

The irony of this whole thing is unbelievable (although I'm not yet sure if it is the real irony or the Alanis Morissette kind).

Jeremy Bloom was a world-class skier. He competed in the Olympics. He needed endorsements to ski because that is the way skiing is setup. However, those endorsements were going to be based almost exclusively on his skiing prowess. If it weren't for the NCAA challenge, very few people would've even known he was a football player and skier.

I'm sure Zbikowski is a good boxer. However, I have my doubts that his boxing prowess alone is enough to warrant him getting this kind of draw and fighting in MSG. It's obvious that the draw for this fight is his status as a Notre Dame football player. His opponent is even wearing a Buckeye uniform to the ring.

So on one hand, Bloom's money and draw would be coming from his skiing prospects with no regard to his status as a NCAA S-A. On the other hand, Zbikowski's money and draw is based just as much (and arguably more) on his status as a NCAA S-A than his boxing prospects. Yet, by technicality, Zbikowski is free to take money and Bloom is not.

It's like raaiiinn...

Perfectly stated.......

As usual, Dodd's article is a laughable piece of shit. Besides the gratuitous ripping on Bloom, who did NOTHING wrong or jerky at all, it's just a giant ND-Weis cock-slobber with no analysis whatseover of the issues that methomps has so succinctly pointed out.

BTW, who besides me suspects that the Bell guy isn't even an OSU fan, but is getting paid an extra few grand to wear OSU gear just for hype purposes?

EDIT: Nothing against Tommy Z. at all. He's a good hard-nosed player and seems like a good kid, but did Dodd really compare him to Pat Tillman. As Johnny Mac would say: "You cannot be serious!"

Tommy Z says his next opponent is from Ohio.

The opponent promised to wear his Ohio State jersey.

Here's to hoping that the Golden Gloves Boxer (betcha didn't know Zbikowski was a Golden Gloves Boxer) gets the snot knocked out of him by an Ohioan.
