Zurp's Computer Rankings

Zurp

I have misplaced my pants.
For those of you who care, I made an excel file to rank all the teams. Don't ask me for the formula, because it's long and complicated, and therefore not worth explaining (and probably very illogical). But it's pretty fancy and takes up much of my boredom. I also haven't double-checked it recently. I may have entered "Texas Tech 99, Crap-Pants State 0," when it should be the other way around. Let me know if you see a team's record is wrong, or something.

Here's what I got:

It's pretty funny - Northwestern above Notre Dame?
Oh well. Maybe it will look better by the end of the year.

I don't know what your formula is, but it obviously isn't bi-coastal. ND twenty what? New York and Boston are after your ass. (I, however, applaud your wisdom)

None the less, food for thought, thanks.

That's right in the middle of ND's computer rankings. They're 22, 23, 25, 25, NR, and NR in the 6 BCS computer polls this week.

It would be interesting to hear how the formula got some of the teams in front of us up there....such as TCU.

I'd have to look at the file to see who TCU played, and how those teams have done. And the excel file is so big and my computer sucks enough that I'd rather not load it right now.

I'm surprised that Ohio State is above Nebraska and Auburn, each 5-1. I guess that their losses (I forget who) hurt them more than Ohio State's losses to the #1 and #4 teams in the ranking.

I don't know who the other teams in the top 25 are playing, but I don't expect Ohio State to be helped much with a win over Indiana. If anything, they can be helped a bunch with wins by Ohio State's previous opponents. For instance (I loaded the stupid file), if Michigan State beats Northwestern, and no other games happen, Ohio State moves up to 12. But if Ohio State beats Indiana, and no other games happen, they move up to tie TCU for 16. A Penn State win over Illinois (no other games) moves Ohio State to 16 and TCU to 17.

Its not a great system. Last year I tried to use it to predict the outcomes of the bowl games. It was 14-14 - not good. But its something to do at work, so I do it.

Note: "Other" is any non-Div-IA team. I lumped them together to make one team, because the file was big enough, as it was, and I didn't want to add 50+ teams that only play 1 or 2 games against IA teams.

Again, the results are pretty funny (Alabama and Va Tech ahead of USC?), but they take up a couple of minutes a day for me.

WOW, Oklahoma just out of the Top 25, and Texas Tech fell hard, from 11 to 23, after losing to the #1 ranked team. It was a bad loss but I don't think they should have fallen 12 spots. Otherwise it looks like a good poll.

I don't see how you can have Temple ahead of UNLV.

I thought that was interesting, too. A winless team ahead of a 2-win team. But, again, its not like I change the results at all. At least, not on purpose. There may be some games where I have the wrong outcome. There may be gremlins living in my excel program, who change the rankings as they see fit. But I can't say for sure, since none of their sightings have ever been documented, and only the crazy locals claim to have ever seen them.

And I was surprised to see TTech drop so far, too. Ohio State lost to the same #1 Texas team AND to #4 Penn State, and are #13. Of course, TTech's game against a Div-IAA team hurts their score, since it's all based on averages. (A win over the #118 team doesn't add much value, and then the average will lower their score.)

The distance that texas tech fell is something that vindicates your poll. It would be difficult for any computer to have ranked them that low before the Texas game, but after it I have no problem with seeing them drop like a stone.

It is very difficult to quantify, and therefore teach to a computer, the types of things that are boringly obvious to good analysts like Kirk Herbstreit. Kirk knew that Texas Tech was not deserving of anything like their ranking, and said so. After Saturday's pantsing, he said "...Tech was exposed" with all the drama of a grocery list. He wasn't proud of himself. He was pointing out that he had pointed out the obvious.

This is exactly the type of thing that an analyst can see plainly that a computer cannot (at least not yet). A good(great?) offense and a suspect defense and an easy early schedule (but opponents records don't look bad because of their own crappy schedules).

Think you could program that into a computer? Then why hasn't anyone done it successfully/consistently?

As I stated last week, Zurp's algorithm works as well as anything I've seen.

Someone asked for tips on how to do something like this on his own. About the only way I can think of helping is just to try and explain the way I did it. It's simple in my mind (but who knows how my mind works?), but explaining it is difficult. Maybe this helps anyone who wants to do something like this, and maybe someone has an idea on how I can do this better.

Here goes:

First, I type in all the games of the week. (I do this in a separate excel file, because the rankings file tries to calculate the rankings after any value has changed, and it takes forever. So I enter them in a blank spreadsheet and then copy/paste them in my real spreadsheet.) So under one column, I have "Ohio State", "41" is the next column, "at", "Indiana", "10". I don't know why I added the deal with the scores this year. The scores do not affect the rankings. (3-0 win is the same as 99-0.) The file then figures out who won and who lost. Then it counts how many times each team won and lost, and can figure out a winning percentage. The file then ranks the teams based on win percentage. (Let's call this ranking "A" for now.)

Next, it goes through each game again. For each game a specific team won, they get the number of points equal to the number of wins the opposing team has. Penn State and Texas, for example, would get 5 points for their wins against Ohio State. For each game a team loses, they lose the number of points equal to the number of losses the opposing team has. Ohio State loses 0 for losing to Texas, and 1 for losing to Penn State. The average of these points is figured for each team, and the teams are ranked based on the highest average. (I don't have my file here, so I don't have any specific numbers for this.) (Let's call this ranking "B" for now.)

Somehow I have home/away factored in there. I can't remember how I did that, though.

Anyway, let's go on.. Next, it goes through each game AGAIN. Now, for every loss a team gets, they lose a number of points equal to the "B" ranking. (Losing to the #1 team won't hurt a team much, while losing to the #100 team will.) For every win a team gets, they get the number of points equal to 120-"B". (Beating the #5 team will help a lot, but beating the #115 team will not.) These numbers are then averaged for each team. (Let's call this ranking "C".)

Finally, go through each game AGAIN, much like it was done the step before, except using the "C" ranking. This new ranking is "D".

For each team average the four rankings, using "C" and "D" twice each. (A+B+C+C+D+D)/6. Ohio State's average rank was, I think, 13.67. Rank the teams based on the average ranks, and you get what I posted before.

Easy, huh?

I figure that this way, the timing of a game doesn't affect a team's rank. Losing the first game and winning the rest doesn't help/hurt a team any differently than losing the last game and winning the rest. Also, it doesn't hurt a team much to lose games that they were supposed to lose. It doesn't help a team much to win games they were supposed to win.

Texas Tech was ranked low for an undefeated team (#11), because they averaged in a couple of Div-IAA teams. Div-IAA teams, for my deal, count as teams with something like 0.3-6.7 records. So they average low numbers for their wins. I'm still surprised they dropped so far after a loss, since they shouldn't have lost many points for losing to #1.

Anyway, that's it. I'd like to hear suggestions on how to improve it. But I probably won't change much, since I'm pretty lazy.

i'm trying to follow, couple question though...

can you give a explanation of what each ranking is? example, A = win percent. what does B, C, D represent?

why do you use the C and the D twice in the final average?

seems like there is a level of redundancy. your B ranking is directly based off of the team's win-loss record but so is the win percentage. would your rankings change any if you deleted the win percentage from the equation?

why do you take the next iteration (for lack of a better word) of the B ranking, i don't follow that part.
