'06 OH ATH Derrell Johnson (Iowa Signee)

Troy Smith was recruited as an Atlete and that has worked out pretty good for us thus far. His arm isn't as strong as Troy's is but he is quite accurate, especially on the move. His speed might be even better than Troy's and he definitely has the ability to make people miss and find the endzone. Would love to add him to the team.

Derrell is probably option #3 as far as QBs go in this class. Henton is #1 and Grant Schwartz is #2. Johnson is being looked at because of how dangerous he is once the ball is in his hands in the open field. I think his future, if at OSU, is as a WR.

With the depth at QB Ohio State has he would be hard pressed to do play that position. I'm sure the staff has made it abundently clear where they are recruiting him...would LOVE to see him at WR.

It is clear they are recruiting him as a WR.

I agree with bn44820 on his anaylysis of the film. He does have very good feet and he can make people miss.

I really like the guys that go from QB to WR. They understand the coverage sometimes better and they realize where they need to be so the QB can get them the ball.

I believe the year the ships count towards is determine by when they enroll. If he goes on scholarship in August (or anytime up until next August I believe) he is part of this years class.

Just to follow up, and recalling how this all works, the 25 limit is based on the number of athletes who go on scholarship during the calendar year - with the calendar year beginning with the fall term.

So kids like Homan and Coleman who are coming in early actually count towards last year's 25.

The 85 limit is the total number of athletes who can be on schollie at any given time.

OSU rarely approaches these limits so it has not been an issue. But this is how schools can have classes of 29 or 30. Since limits don't kick in when LOIs are signed - only when they enroll - they either enroll early, grayshirt for an entire year, or end up DQd and never enroll at all.

Maybe they are focusing on the last few recruits and some of the big time '07 folks for now. I he qualifies down the road they could evaluate where they are at and what they need. I am sure they have made it clear to him what he needs to do to get here. By the sounds of it he wouldn't be able to qualify until he graduates.
