Gainesville coach supports recruiting approach of UGA?s Mark Richt

By Michael Carvell | Tuesday, February 24, 2009, 11:44 PM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Gainesville has two juniors, wide receiver Tai-Ler Jones and quarterback Blake Sims, with around 40 scholarship offers between them.
However, neither player has been offered by Georgia, which has some local Bulldog fans confused. But Gainesville coach Bruce Miller said he and his prospects are just fine with how UGA is handling the recruiting process.
?This is just my impression; [Mark Richt] is such a good person, and he doesn?t want to throw any offers out there and have to take them back, like some other schools do,? Miller said. ?He?s such a man of character, and he doesn?t want to do anything like that.?
At least four Georgia assistants have called Gainesville in recent days. Neither Jones nor Sims have been offered by the Bulldogs, but both were invited to Athens on March 21. ?After they go over there in March, I wouldn?t be surprised if both players came home with an offer. We?ll see what happens, though.?
Jones is one the nation?s leaders in early offers with nearly 30, including Georgia Tech. He may also be state?s leader in offers without one from UGA.
If Georgia does eventually offer Jones, will it hurt the Bulldogs chances against other schools that offered earlier? ?I don?t think so,? Miller said. ?If Tai-Ler goes over there in March and Georgia really knocks his socks off, then I think all that other stuff will be forgotten by everybody.?
NCAA rules prevent Richt from commenting on prospective student-athletes. However, Richt did say earlier this month that ?at times, we probably offer a little bit slower, in some cases, than other schools? because once Georgia offers a prospect and that particular player commits, then the Bulldogs will stand by it.

Father of Gainesville?s Tai-Ler Jones OK with Georgia?s recruiting philosophy

By Scott Bernarde | Thursday, February 26, 2009, 10:03 PM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Georgia?s perceived slow interest in Gainesville High?s Tai-Ler Jones, one of the state?s top wide receiver prospects for 2010, had his father a little perplexed, but Andre Jones said he?s fine with the program?s stance on recruiting.
The elder Jones, a member of Notre Dame?s 1988 national championship team, said that even though his son hadn?t heard from Georgia coaches until the past week, he won?t second-guess their actions. Tai-Ler Jones has nearly 30 offers, including several from top-flight programs.
Although restricted by NCAA rules to speak on specific prospects, Georgia coach Mark Richt recently said his program sometimes makes offers a little slower than other schools to make sure it will be a solid offer.
?I definitely understand their position,? the elder Jones said.
Andre Jones said the Bulldogs have reached out to Tai-Ler [pronounced TY-ler] indirectly through his coaches and have invited the receiver to a Junior Day on March 21. ?It sounds like it will be a promising day,? he said, although he?s not sure it will result in an offer.
Recently, Tai-Ler Jones said he wasn?t bothered that Georgia hadn?t contacted him, but admitted he wasn?t sure why not.
Jones, a 6-foot, 178-pound junior with 4.45 speed, has offers from Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio State, Tennessee, Clemson, UCLA, Miami, Cal, Vandy and South Carolina, among others.
Andre Jones said it will be his son?s decision, but he wouldn?t mind him selecting Notre Dame. ?Notre Dame is at the top of my board, but there are four or five others I?m impressed with,? said Andre Jones, adding he knows Tai-Ler also will consider the value of a college degree in his final decision.

I think Jones might be one of the top 5 WRs in the nation...and as has been pointed out on this site many times, OSU seems to do well in these types of situations (no, not kids from SEC country...I mean kids with father's who played professional sports [which his father has done...and his father has also worked as a sports agent]).

Perhaps I underestimated his upside. Forgive the question, it was merely born of curiosity.

No reason to apologize...it is certainly a valid question. Jones is better than anyone in the state of Ohio right now and it isn't even close.

I am cautiously optimistic about this for 2 reason
A-the kid is from Gainesville HS-we snagged Keith Wells out of there, and almost landed Nick Claytor(GT-stud) the year before. tOSU has some juice in that particular community-they seem to look at the football world a bit more broadly at that school than at your typical SEC locale.

B-as wadc mentioned, the kids dad is a former professional athlete, who attended ND-he has been around, seen how the big time works-those types of parents are usually impressed by Tressel-moreso than Randy Shannon or Rick Neuheisel,IMO. I get the impression that Tressel doesn't suffer fools gladly in recruiting, and isn't willing to suffer them to land a recruit-sometimes a problem. Parents who are educated and succesful (and their sons)tend to mesh better w/ Tressel than those who are neither.

Agreed completely. I really think OSU is sitting well here and even if we don't get him, I really don't see a WR in Ohio near his talent level. Maybe Tyrone Williams but he is a completely different type of player. In any event, we need 2 WR's and Jones is one of the best in the country. I am also holding my breath on this one...simply seems like a JT type of recruit to me, for the reasons STX mentioned. It would also be nice to pick up an early commit from Montana, as that would certainly help our chances. QB's can really help build a class around them.
