Tigers' junior quarterback Derek Roback led a furious charge over the game's final 3:48 to rally Waverly from a 15-point deficit to upend Piketon in a 54-53 win Friday night.

After Keiffer Reed broke free for a 57-yard touchdown run to put Piketon ahead 53-38 with 3:53 remaining, Roback took control.

The Tigers' quarterback completed three passes (41, 9 and 7 yards) and used three keepers (6, 2 and 1 yard) to find the endzone to close the gap to 53-46.

Then when Waverly finally made a stop against the Redstreaks on defense, Roback returned a punt almost 90 yards for a touchdown with 47 seconds on the clock.

Rather than go for a tie - the Tigers were 0-for-2 kicking PATs - Waverly went for the win.

Roback fired a pass that a diving Kevin Malone hauled in for a two-point conversion and a victory.

"It was the only thing we could do. We knew we were going to go for two," Wright said. "We had it. We scored. We're going to go for it."

The odds of completing a pass were definitely in Waverly's favor.

On the night - in his first start under center - Roback completed 28 of 48 passes for 417 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions.

I absolutely love Derek's mentality... especially willing to go block for his RB ALL THE WAY down the field (much like when Sanchez did it to us... guys want to play for QBs like that). He's got speed and look to have a very nice touch on the ball. I would be surprised if he is not highly recruited once the recruiting season gets a little more underway for 2010. Only thing I would question is his competition, as I have no idea what type of football class he plays in.
