'10 OH RB Erick Howard (Ohio U Walk-On)

Without revealing too much from the Scout board it sounds like things may be looking up for Howard. Especially now that he's making strides towards improving his grades.
Sounds like he has two very concrete things to do. One is done and he's working hard on the other. If he gets it done, sounds like he'll be a Buckeye. I'm rooting for him.

I will always root for those who want to be Buckeyes. But, I will ESPECIALLY root for those who are willing to go that extra mile to BE a Buckeye.

If Howard can pull this off, he will be my favorite recruit in this class. Go, Howard!

Ohio.com - Explosive back defuses rebel side to focus on game, studies

By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sports columnist

POSTED: 01:04 p.m. EDT, Aug 26, 2009

LIANCE: Don Hertler sat in the end-zone bleachers at Mount Union College on a late July morning.

His North Canton team had just concluded a morning workout at a football camp.

Hertler took a few seconds and pondered the status and the future for Erick Howard, his all-everything tailback.

''This is not a movie with a happy ending,'' Hertler said. ''It's a long process.''

Growing up is a long process, isn't it? For anyone?

And might it not provide unique challenges to a young man who moved from Cleveland to North Canton when he was just a kid? A young man who changed his approach when it was (by his own admission) dangerously close to spiraling out of control and who spent last season living in his coach's basement while his mother resided in Seattle.

It's really hard not to pull for a kid like this. We should all be thankful that there are people in the world like his coach who are willing to go the extra mile to help a kid out.

Hope that he makes the grade this year.

For all those supporting EH in the day to day... :oh: My hat is off to all of you.

:io: And I really hope to see this kid make it!

Just back from the game and Louisville had Hoover and Howard's number all night, final was 34-13.
Eric rushed for -1 yards on 11 carries in the first half.
After the contest was decided he had some nice runs, but not a lot of rushing yardage.
Still have to believe if he is not being hit in the backfield every carry, he is scary good--Exceptional balance, speed, determination and elite level strength for a high school athlete. He reminds me of Javon Ringer in high school.
If he can pass the admissions, he will make some D 1 school very, very happy.

yeah gracelhink. i was there too. louisville's defensive line dominated the game. thats the first time ive seen howard in person and it was hard to judge him with the very little blocking that was going on. he had some tough runs though. tough to bring down.

Louisville makes it three in a row over Hoover, 34-13

LOUISVILLENever expect Paul Farrah to call any win perfect. The Louisville High School football coach is too much of a perfectionist.
But he couldn?t hide his satisfied smile Thursday night after another Louisville's convincing win over its old rival.
The reloading Leopards shut down Mr. Football and the Hoover offense while unloading on the Vikings with their own high-powered offense in a 34-13 victory.
. . .

For the third straight year, Louisville gave Howard no room to run and often met him with a defender or three behind the line of scrimmage. He has 4,139 yards in his career but gained 45 yards on 19 carries Thursday, giving him 124 yards on 46 career attempts against Louisville.

Howard became just the second junior ever to win the coveted Mr. Football award last fall, joining Euclid's Robert Smith (1988-1989). The 5-foot-10, 210-pound senior rushed for 2,387 yards and 31 touchdowns.

"He was Mr. Football for a reason. He's a special player," Lex coach B.J. Payne said. "I've known about him since he was in the seventh grade.

"He's probably the best power back to come out of Ohio since Beanie Wells."

In addition to his offensive responsibilities, Howard plays linebacker on defense. He had 98 tackles, three sacks and eight tackles for loss last year.

"He is an underrated linebacker," Payne said. "He's an outstanding football player."

Louisville did a number on Howard last week, limiting him to zero yards on 11 first-half carries.

"We're going to try to regroup from last week," Hoover coach Don Hertler said. "That was a big rivalry game and they handed it to us pretty good.

"Erick is going to be good for us. We have got to get better around him."
