'13 JUCO LB Tommy Sanders (Texas A&M Verbal)

I'm not sure it is that simple. You might be right but while they would all be coming in at the same time, the staff may view Sanders as more ready to contribute right away given that he is older, has played at the JUCO level and will have less eligibility left while Mitchell and Johnson may need some time to get themselves familiar with college ball.

I tend to think this is the case, which is probably proven by this info:

Found from earlier this week

Says he's down to Mississippi State, Texas A&M and tOSU. OSU told him they want a JUCO LB to be the leader of all their young talented LB's. Wants a family atmosphere and announcing decision on December 12th.

He could just be referring to the ones on the roster already, but I took it to mean the ones in this class. Guess we'll find out come signing day!

Exactly. Like Marc Givler $aid, the last true freshman LB to make a SIGNIFICANT impact at OSU was Katzenmoyer. Even Ryan Shazier, who everyone believes is a future All-American, needed time to adjust. To think that Mitchell or Johnson are going to step in and start from Day 1 is just wishful thinking. The staff sees them as the future. The staff see Sanders as the present. With Sanders, OSU could possibly get a kid with the maturity, strength, conditioning and talent to help out as soon as he steps on campus. Keep in mind he has been at Butler CC...where they literally groom guys to move on to D1 programs...and they play nothing but other football factories like Fort Scott, Iowa Western, Coffeyville and Garden City. This level of competition is vastly superior to even the big time HS ball Johnson and Mitchell play.

Larry Grant filled in nicely at LB for a couple of NC runs in '06 and '07. I think it's the same idea here. Right now they got two they can trust in Shazier and Perry and are looking to add a third.

Was hoping Grant could be that third, but a guy like Sanders is a good plan 1b policy for next year.

Agreed. It would be fantastic if one of the two could come in a start from the get-go, but that's just not likely. I think it might speak more to the staff's confidence in Curtis Grant to step up and take control in the present, as well. Regardless of the true reasons behind the offer, let's hope that we can bring in all three and let them duke it out for a starting spot!

Sanders to make his decision this week

By Phil Kornblut
LB Tommy Sanders of Butler County JC, KS wrapped up his official visit to USC Sunday morning and headed to his home in Cordele, GA. USC was his last official visit and he plans to have a decision by Wednesday. "Everything was good," Sanders said. "I met with the players and the coaches. I hung out the most with Clowney. He's a great guy. He told me it's a great place with great support on and off the field. He said they have a strong team coming back and are shooting to win the SEC next year. They have five seniors (at linebacker) leaving so it's a great opportunity for me to come in and play. I'm going to go back home and narrow it down and see which one best fits me." Sanders also visited Ohio State, Texas A&M and Mississippi State and he's only considering the schools he visited. He said there is no leader at this point and he's not expecting any coaches to visit before the dead period begins Monday
