#1 DE Class

Top 100 player Doug Worthington(5*) and two 4* DE's Lawrence Wilson and Ryan Williams. IMO the staff did a bang up job landing two OOS studs and a former ND commit. This is definately something the staff can hang their hats on and it will pay dividends in the future.

My overall take on the Recruiting Season

1 - The coaches did one phenomenal job this season. Just a small list of the distractions these coaches dealt with...
-Overall ESPN saga
-Maurice Clarret saga
-New Recruiting Coordinator
-Loss of 3 coaches from last year
-The Troy Smith issues
-Retirement of Geiger
-The national press on how "poor" our offense was

2 - Not only did we recruit 18 wonderful athletes but each one has high character and handled this process with high character. How many other schools can be proud of the way that each one of their signees handled the process...NOT many.

3 - We have a great nucleus coming back in 05 and a pretty good one in 06 so this class needed to add to that and we did with great versatility. This has been spoke of throughout the process but take another look...

NAME Possible Positions

Andre Amos WR, CB, or Safety
Alex Boone A perfect OT
Jim Cordle OG, C, or OT
Todd Denlinger DT or DE
Brian Hartline WR, CB, or Safety
Malcolm Jenkins WR, CB, or Safety

James Laurinaitis All 3 LB Spots

Freddie Lenix LB, Safety, or RB
Jamario O'Neal Any position except QB, OL, or DL
Brian Robiskie WR but I think he will be an animinal on ST
Anderson Russel RB or Safety

Rob Schoenhoft QB
Austin Spitler All 3 LB Spots
Donald Washington WR, CB, or Safety

Maurice Wells RB all the way

Ryan Williams DE maybe TE in a pinch

Lawrence Wilson DE or TE
Doug Worthington DE OR DT

Tressel Excited About '05 Recruits

Pretty good article detailing JT's opinions on the class. Rea recounted JT's excitement as Lawrence Wilson's LOI came through the fax machine. JT discussed how the allegations of this past year were not too much of a problem as his staff's philosophy is to be upfront and truthful with the recruits at all times. He admits that some other staffs are not the same way, but he does not feel as if his approach puts tOSU at a disadvantage. He also discussed the lower number of visits this year (27) which landed 18 commitments. Basically, JT wants kids genuinely interested in tOSU to visit to ensure a higher rate of success. Also, he discussed the differences between Coach Peterson's recruiting philosophy and Coach Conley. JT discussed Conley's preference for a mass visit while he prefers a smaller crowd in order to ensure more one-on-one time to assess the kids' personalities. Also, JT took a small stab at Conley after the former Coach has been critical of the program and its efforts:

The head coach took a thinly veiled jab at former recruiting coordinator Bill Conley after one reporter phrased a question about academic standards varying from Big Ten school to Big Ten school as a quote from Conley: "Coach Conley?" Tressel said with a wry grin. "The academician that he is?" It was widely reported last recruiting season that two recruits Conley wanted for the Buckeyes' class of 2004 were dropped because of academic problems, and that indirectly led to Conley stepping down as recruiting coordinator. Neither Conley nor Tressel has ever admitted there was any rift.
I don't think either will NEED to admit a rift after that one....

This is the most frustrating time of the year for me because I get really excited about the new recruits and I just want to see how good they become. I don't want to have to wait a year, 2, sometimes 3 before I am able to see how they develope. I wish this was like a video game so all I had to do is set my roster and then see how good they become  .

It seems like we have a ton of great WR/DB athlete type players. M Wells looks great but he is probably not the bruiser type tailback OSU is used to. Does this signal a continued change in offensive philosophy like we had at the end of the season? Perhaps that is what excites me the most. We've struggled offensively compared to the some of the nations top O's for the last few years even when it seemed like we had the skill and speed players to make it happen. OSU has been a top team with a dominate D. With a dominate D and O, the sky is the limit. Kudos to JT, the rest of the staff, and most of all the recruits. I'm looking forward to 4-5 more memorable OSU football years.
