2008 Preseason and Regular season Polls

Mr. Zarzour needs his polling privelages revoked. Obviously he doesn't follow CFB at all.

Cal #6, VaTech #7? State Penn and Wiscy above tOSU? Boise State #11? NOTRE DAME ranked? :slappy:

Wow, just wow.

I beg to differ. He has 3 SEC teams in the top 5 and USC #1. He follows college football very well, as long as you consider listening to every national talking head and taking it as gospel without actually viewing a game following football.

Or maybe he is a historian and remembers tOSU's preseason ranking in 2002 and wants some sort of synergy between the years. Who knows?!?

For as much as people bitch and moan about the computers, at least they're not wildly irrational and biased like the voters. But of course, if we just left it to the computers we'd have no rankings until at least week 6 (which is fine by me). ESPN needs something to blather on about for July and August until the season starts.

Then again, wasn't Ohio State ranked 13th in the 2002 preseason poll? (I checked and they were). Maybe Mr Zarzour is a believer in Karma (or something like that) and an Ohio State fan that is trying to get a little bit of that 2002 magic into this season.

Or maybe he's just a fucking SEC asshole with an ax to grind and no idea what is going on in the College Football world.

Either way, less than two weeks until kickoff!

He's obviously just looking for a reaction and everyone who clicks on a link and or leaves any type of feedback about him is encouraging the behavior.

That 'ole Buckeye lover named Dennis Dodd has a new preseason #1. Along with a #1 ranking comes a indictment of the Big Ten as being soft, and the obligatory re-hash of the SEC team "ready to rip out its chunk of scarlet-and-gray flesh."

You have to like Dennis Dodd's thinking about Ohio State:

25 things: The season is knocking on the door -- loudly
Aug. 15, 2008

2. Who is No. 1?

. Ohio State

11. Ohio State-USC

Buckeyes vs. Trojans on Sept. 13 is largely considered the game of the year. The game of September, maybe (see below).
Both teams can afford a loss in this game at the Coliseum because the loser can run the table in its conference and still get to the BCS championship game.

13. Upsets of the year

Utah over Michigan (Aug. 30): This one is too good to pass up. Utah comes to Ann Arbor with a veteran team (16 returning starters), a bulked up offensive line (averging 311 pounds), a physical tailback (Darrell Mack) and an Orange Bowl berth on the line. Last season, the Utes won at Louisville and TCU and put to rest Karl Dorrell's UCLA career.

Ohio State over USC (Sept. 13): One of the nation's most stout defenses goes up against an offense that is still finding itself. The USC quarterback situation is up in the air until Sanchez returns and Pete Carroll is still looking for a go-to receiver. Watch for Beanie Wells to pound it out and Terrelle Pryor to give the Trojans fits.

14. The Heisman Thing

2. Chris Wells, Ohio State: It will be impossible for the new Eddie George not to run wild this season.

15. Defensive Player of the Year

James Laurinaitis, LB, Sr., Ohio State: He should be playing -- no, starting -- in the NFL but this hard-working senior came back to chase a title. You're probably sick of hearing his name considering Laurinaitis has won enough hardware in his first three seasons to start a treasury. Don't count him out for a trip to New York this season. Seriously.

17. BCS bowls

BCS Championship: Ohio State vs. Oklahoma

19. Will Notre Dame be back?

Uh, no. A 7-5 might be doable but that's not "back" as far as Irish honks are concerned.

21. The freshman impact

Terrelle Pryor, QB, Ohio State: Jim Tressel is being coy about his playing time but expect a Tim Tebow-like secret-weapon type season.

25. In and Out

In: Terrelle Pryor at Ohio State
Out: Quarterback depth at Michigan

In: Beanie (Wells)
Out: Charlie (Weis)

Can someone please explain to me why LSU is ranked 6/7 in the polls? They lost everyone from last year, and don't have a QB who's taken a college snap. They'll have a hard time making it through their creampuff OOC games, let alone the SEC sched.

Not true. Their RB's, WR's, TE's, OL, and DL are stocked. Their secondary and QB's are clear weaknesses heading into the year but if you have great line play on both sides of the ball, you have a chance to be really good.

I take umbrage with some of the other choices more than where he has us ranked. Cal at #6? Are you fucking kidding me? Boise State #11? Seriously? PSU that high? WTF? N_tre _ame ranked? Um, okay.

I realize that LSU is one of the programs that has an influx of new talent every year, but I think they lost too much to really be considered a top 7 team this year. Dorsey, Hester, Hightower, Steltz, and Flynn were the leaders on th3 07 team. They also have to replace both starting CBs, Doucet, and Perriloux. The QB situation is the big red flag for me. It's not that I think they will be terrible, but ranking them that high suggests that they would be in a BCS bowl at the end. I'm expecting them to finish 3/4 in the SEC, and that's assuming that they can find a QB that will play above expectations. I can see them ranked in the 12-15 range, but top 10 seems high to me.

Agreed. I think they're getting the defending National Champion pass in the preseason polls. They'll be strong along the lines and have a good ground game, but suspect play at QB and in the secondary could be good for 3-4 losses, especially in the SEC (I know, I know). I see them as a 10-3 or 9-4 team with a ranking somewhere around #15-18. Their schedule...

Appalachian St.
Troy
North Texas
at Auburn
Miss. St.
at Florida
at S. Carolina
Georgia
Tulane
Alabama
Ole Miss
at Arkansas

The first three are practically gimmies. I know Appy State is tough, but this isn't scUM in the big house (and damn, troy has to play both us and LSU?!?!?!?). Auburn is the 1st landmine. A lot will depend on how they are adapting to their new offensive scheme, but this will be the young QB's first road test. Miss. State is improved, but that's in Death Valley. At Florida can probably be chalked up as a Loss. At S. Carolina will be a tough one, Spurrier is always good for an upset or two a year. They get Georgia at home, but good chance they drop that one. Tulane is a gimmie. Bama will be better this year. Ole Miss sucks, but they'll be up for that game. At Arky will be a dogfight.

I can easily see 3-4 losses amongst Auburn, Florida, the other USC, Georgia, Bama and Arky.

Makes perfect sense about Penn State and Wisconsin. We return only 20 of 24 starters (w/kickers), while both PSU and Wiscy lose their starting QBs, and we only beat them 37-17 and 38-17, respectively, in consecutive weeks...so of course they should be ranked above us.

Eh, it's preseason. Georgia won't be #1 when they're 8-4. I'm kind of surprised, however, that the AP voted 21 times for OSU. I figured they'd be a lot more bitter about the past few seasons. Maybe there's hope for humanity yet.

Someone agrees with you.
