When have we lost THAT focus? I can't wait for this pre-season to get over with and start the real season on Nov. 22.

Have to disagree, we won't have much of a season if we trip up at one of the remaining away games. Let's take one game at a time and go from there. Then when M!ch1g@n week comes, then get pumped. But let's not overlook the two away games (One of which beat us on our own turf last year).

U-M football facing dire times ahead ? Team could set record for losses

By Dan Strawser
DAILY PRESS & ARGUS

October 28, 2008

ANN ARBOR ? Rich Rodriguez and the Michigan football team are headed for uncharted territory ? negative territory.
U-M fell to 2-6 following Saturday's loss to Michigan State and the Wolverines are one loss shy of the school record set in 1934, '36 and '62.
Michigan hasn't had a losing season since 1965 (4-6), but all signs point in that direction as the Wolverines head into their final four games.
U-M's best chance for a win comes this week at Purdue (2-6, 0-4 Big Ten), the only team without a conference victory.
Michigan follows that with a road trip to Minnesota (7-1, 3-1), a home game against Northwestern (6-2, 2-2) and the season finale at Ohio State (7-2, 4-1).
"After eight games we should have more consistency on the level of play, hopefully a high level, but we're not," Rodriguez said. "That's the thing that's probably most frustrating to our coaches."
Rodriguez has consistently mentioned that part of the struggle is due to having so many first-year and inexperienced players on the field.
Sixteen players (12 on offense, four on defense) made their first career start this season and U-M has played 18 freshmen so far.

Recruits enjoy their visits to Michigan despite loss to MSU

Michigan lost at home to in-state rival Michigan State for the first time since 1990 on Saturday, but not all the news coming out of Ann Arbor this weekend was negative.

“My favorite part was the game, the stadium and the fans,” said Pahokee, Fla., running back and verbal commit Vincent Smith who was one of the eight official visitors. “When I was walking down the tunnel and the team came out, that really rattled me. It was more than I expected.”

Wichita Falls, Texas quarterback Shavodrick Beaver, another verbal commit on an official visit, was also attending his first game at Michigan Stadium. He said he felt better about the future of this Michigan program after seeing the Wolverines in action on Saturday.

“The record doesn’t bother me because I know what the potential is for this team,” Beaver commented. “The future looks real bright right now.”
Lauderhill (Fla.) Plantation teammates Vladimir Emilien and Josh Robinson came for their official visits together. They were hosted by safety Brandon Smith and linebacker Kenny Demens and credited the freshman for showing them a good time in Ann Arbor.

“They were pretty cool because they were 18 and 19 years old, and it was just fun to be around them,” said Emilien, a 6-foot-1, 186-pound safety prospect.

“Brandon Smith, he's real cool. I had a blast with him. He's hilarious, so we got along real well," added the 6-0, 180-pound Robinson, a wide receiver recruit.
The only negative comments were with regards to the Michigan weather. Grand Prairie (Texas) wide receiver Dewayne Peace, who committed to Michigan over the summer, said he was unsure whether he’d be able to live in Ann Arbor for four years after experiencing this weekend’s cool temperatures. The 6-foot, 180-pound receiver plans to officially visit other schools before signing day, but his father is encouraging him to stick with his Michigan pledge.
Unless dad forces him to go to AA, I think Peace is heading elsewhere.

ESPN - Top LB Te'o faces tough decision - Football Recruiting

Nate in Massillion, Ohio: Will Michigan fall out of the top 15 with its most recent decommits?

Craig: Well Nate, I see you are from Ohio. Are you asking because you are an Ohio State fan who wants to see them fall, or are you possibly one of those rare Michigan fans in Buckeye land? Either way, Michigan at this time is heading in the wrong direction.

It has suffered several decommitments this year with athlete Kevin Newsome (Chesapeake, Va. / Hargrave Military), offensive tackle William Campbell (Detroit/ Cass Tech), wide receiver Bryce McNeal (Minneapolis/Breck School) and kicker Anthony Fera (Houston/Saint Pius X) all backing away from their verbals. Off the four, all but Fera decommitted before the latest rankings were released, which had Michigan at No. 11. So while we think Fera is a excellent kicker, his departure is probably not enough to make Michigan slide four spots out of the top 15. Also there is a good chance it can get Campbell back before it is all said and done.

In the big picture though, it needs to stop losing players as all four are good prospects who could have helped this team. Overall though, it is still a strong class filling needs. Tate Forcier (San Diego/Scripps Ranch) and Shavodrick Beaver (Wichita Falls, Texas/Rider) are much-needed quarterbacks, while ESPNU 150 defensive end Craig Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) provides new blood on defense.

It still needs to keep adding players though to prevent from getting passed. Those decommitments have weakened the class, and programs like North Carolina, Tennessee, Penn State, South Carolina and Florida are all within striking distance.

Michigan is still in the hunt for players like athletes Donavan Tate (Cartersville, Ga.) and Denard Robinson (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) and offensive tackles Taylor Lewan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) and Travis Bond (Windsor, N.C./Bertie). Adding some of those prospects would help Michigan get going in a positive direction and solidify its ranking.

Scout $ 8/14 UM DL verbal DeQuinta Jones admits that despite his commitment he has wandering eyes, looking at Oklahoma St, Bama, Ark & Cal.
TuscaloosaNews.com | The Tuscaloosa News | Tuscaloosa, AL
DeQuinta Jones, Scout.com three-star defensive tackle from Bastrop High School in La., is committed to Michigan, but plans to visit Alabama.
RR has nothing on Saban's snake oil:
For those who are regulars in the weekly TideSports.com recruiting chat sessions it's been no secret Alabama wants to sign a fast rush defensive end/linebacker. The top targets for the position are all committed to other schools.

Montez Robinson, Scout.com four-star defensive end from Avon High School in Ind., decided to take an official visit to Alabama. The Auburn commitment visited Tuscaloosa for the Ole Miss game, but for now remains a solid verbal pledge to the Tigers.

Olivier Vernon, Scout.com four-star defensive end from American High School in Miami, Fla., is committed to Miami. He plans to take official visits to Alabama and Florida State. He plans to visit Tallahassee on Nov. 8, and Alabama on Dec 5.

Fletcher Cox, Scout.com three-star defensive end from Yazoo City High School in Miss., is a Mississippi State commitment. He remains solid with the Bulldogs, but considering other official visits including one to Alabama.

S&M board discussion about Barwis, asked by KoA (is he a member here?).

I read some of that the other day. They are missing the point. What Barwis conditioning was purported to do was make UM better late in the game because they were to be in better shape than their opponents. Same should apply late in the season as well.

Here is what has happened the past four games:

Illinois lead by 3 at the half and outscored UM 28-6 in the second.

Lowly Toledo outscored UM 6-0 in the second after trailing at the half.

PSU trailed at the half before routing UM 32-0.

And MSU came off a tie at the half to outscore UM 21-7.

There is simply no evidence that Barwis has done anything noteworthy for this team. Now their argument is that it takes two years for his program to kick in. That is not what they were saying this summer.

I can't help but wonder if Barwis has since adopted McGuffie's own personal conditioning program, and applied it to the whole team?
