2011 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I think we do have a decent shot at Story, as FSU keeps on slow playing him. I think OSU and BAMA are neck and neck for DePriest. He has a faimly full of Buckeyes, so that should help. B. Miller I think could be a factor here for the good guys :sneaky:....

I think a sleeper for this class could be Gorman. He is pretty tight with Hayes, and is visiting for the spring game I think. UM does have the inside track though....

I just saw some info up on Pat Martin from SC, and he's being touted as more of a plan B guy. But does our staff have him ranked higher on their list than Eiler Hardy or Ken Mullen?

It depends on if they want 2 CB and 3 S, or 3 CB and 2 S.

IMO, this is how it is shaking out right now:

Plan A (have offers)
Cornerbacks
Doran Grant
DerJuan Gambrell
Damian Swann
Jabriel Washington
Safties
Jeremy Cash
Ronald Tanner
Wayne Lyons
Jabari Gorman
Michael Caputo
Hasean Clinton-Dix

Plan B (do not have offers)
Cornerbacks
Jonathan Aiken
Kenny Mullen
Roger Williamson
Andrew Johnson
Safties
Eilar Hardy
Gerrod Holliman
Patrick Martin
Nick Stoner

These "Plan B" guys are the guys really that I can think of having heard there's mutual interest, but no offers yet (am I missing anybodyfrom either list?). I truly hate using the term "Plan B" by the way.

Predicting the class:

I'm mainly doing this for fun and hopefully to get some of the posters with more knowledge than me to do the same

1 QB - Miller
2 RB -
3 WR - Spencer
4 WR - Wynn
5 TE - ?(looks like Vannett and Koyack are both taking there time)
6 OL - Walker
7 OL - Carter
8 OL - Bobek
9 OL/DL - Underwood
10 OL/DL - Brown
11 DL/OL - Farris
12 DL/OL - Bennett
13 DL - Hale
14 DL - Miller
15 DL - Hayes
16 LB - DePriest
17 LB - ?
18 DB - Tanner
19 DB - Cash
20 DB - Grant
21 DB - Gambrell
22 ?
23 ?

OK So mine is not even complete, but just hoping to ferret out the best guesses from RB7, Wad, 21, and anyone else who want to take a stab at guessing our class come feb.

Major questions I have?

- would Jones receive an offer and still be interested in committing after Miller commits Commit-yes. Receive an offer-I'm leaning towards no, absent a disaster on the Miller front.

- who is the most likely OOS LB to pull the trigger for the bucks: Shazier, Caputo, or Crowell Crowell wou be the most likely,IMO, but I wouldn't put many eggs in any of those baskets.

- understanding that we do not yet know about early departures and transfers, what is the most likely number that we take in this class
19-21 I'd say.
- who is more likely to commit between Koyack and Vanett? Vannett is from Westerville, Koyack is from Pennsylvania. Therefore, I go w/ Vannett
..

I really would like to see the Buckeyes offer Hardy. I have seen him get better every year. His size and speed are legit and just has a knack for making plays. Trust me, I have seen quite a few live the past few seasons. Hopefully things work out and he gets an offer! There is alot of talent coming through Pickerington now and in the next few years and would love to keep the mini pipeline going.

I like Hardy a lot too. Really hope he camps and forces a tough decision for the staff.

I second that, Hardy looks like a real tough kid. I think we're gonna miss on CLinton-Dix, then hopfully we can go after Hardy.

And I'm still wondering why no love Donovan Clark? Maybe grades, or just the staff doesn't think he'll fit our scheme. But it doesn't seem like we'd get him(I know its still real early) with the class of Bigs we already have coming in. I think we only have 2 spots reserved for the linemen and that's being reserved for Bennett and Walker. Clark would be a nice addition too

I think that
A-Underwood will at least get a cameo at DT

B-Mangiro is still wanted by the staff

C-Walker might need to hurry his timetable up if he wants to become a Buckeye-he might not be allowed to play the usual "Glenville game" and wait until late January or so to commit. See Jonathon Newsome for reference.

D-as far as the DL goes, keep recruiting Bennett and McReynolds full bore, and, assuming one of those two commit, go after a pure, fast LEO type to round out the class, IF the staff decides they want another DL. Hayes could end up at DE or DT, Farris, the same, although he probably plays DT, and Miller is a weakside/LEO end.

same way I see it too.

I truly believe the staff was 5 OL, 5 DL... with an outside shot we take an extra OL or DL if the right guys comes knocking.

For Sure OL commits: Chris Carter, Brian Bobek
--I should put Aundrey Walker here too. He's got a spot open and will be a part of this class. We do have some versatility though with Brown and Underwood as possible DT candidates, but Tommy Brown is our only real Off Tackle candidate so I believe he stays OL. Farris also could play LT, but Norwell/Longo look to be our future here and there are also PLENTY of LT-types in the 2012 class that are already expressing interest and are most defeinitely attainable. We could probably squeeze another OL along with Walker though becuase of the versatility of some of our Bigs. Angelo Mangiro would be most likely candidate here (I believe he is visiting this weekend, and possibly for the Spring Game as well), but after him I can't see the staff persuing any more OL at the moment. Maybe later on in the process, but there don't seem to be any targets right now.

Possible OL or DT commits: Tommy Brown, Antonio Underwood, Chase Farris
--Like I said be before, any one of these guys could play on the OL and DL. They're versatile and that has been the staff's MO from the time they got here. All 3 of these are the epitome of the "Power" category the staff recruits, and Farris may even be athletic enough to be part of the "Big Speed" group. The recent Scout 300 came out and Farris is their #89 player in the country and a Top 10 DT recruit. I have always liked him as a SSDE or as the other DE/DT in our 3-4 allignment. I think he's defense all the way. Brown and Underwood both could get looks as a NT on the DL, but it would depend IMO on who else we bring in, and right now we've got offers out to more NT/DT-types than we do OL. I think they both come in for the OL.

For Sure DL commits: Kenny Hayes, Steve Miller
--Well, we've got out future bookends on the DL for the next 4-5 years. These guys are both Top 10 DEs in the country (New Scout 300 has Miller as a 5 star, #35 player overall, while Hayes is at #75 and the #11 DE). Hayes will need to gain some weight to play SSDE, but he will, and we'll have him, Wells and possibly Fellows there (unless he moves to the Weakside), for years to come. Miller is a WSDE and could challenge Fellows here for starting job after Nathan Williams and Solly Thomas graduate/go pro. So, then we've also got Farris in the mold of Doug Worthington and/or Robert Rose to play the DT/DE, or at SSDE. Targets out there for the interior DL: Michael Bennett (#6 DT according to Scout), Kevin McReynolds and Joel Hale. I most definitely believe Bennett is a Buckeye, and I think Hale is more of a possibility than McReynolds at the moment (we'll see where we stand with McReynolds after his Spring Game visit). Hale is 6'5" 290. He is big, strong, and agile. I love his potential. We also have offers to some other DLs out there, but they're all long shots: DE Ray Drew (stays south), DE Jeoffrey Pagan (stays south), DE Aaron Lynch (Notre Dame), DE Ishaq Williams (I don't know anything about him, but TE maybe?).

Anyway, my predictions for the Bigs in the 2011 class:

OG: Chris Carter
OC: Brian Bobek
OG: Antonio Underwood
OG/OT: Tommy Brown
OG/OT: Aundrey Walker
DE: Kenny Hayes
DE: Steve Miller
DE/DT: Chase Farris
DT: Joel Hale
DT: Michael Bennett

Possible 11th: OL Angelo Mangiro or DT Kevin McReynolds. I think we'd make room for either of them.

If almost what would you change?

I think Brown stays on offense for sure (like BGriff said I think he is the only true tackle candidate at this point...maybe Walker)...and I think Farris stays on defense.

I do agree 100% with this breakdown, which is probably the most important part of BGriff's post:

OG: Chris Carter
OC: Brian Bobek
OG: Antonio Underwood
OG/OT: Tommy Brown
OG/OT: Aundrey Walker
DE: Kenny Hayes
DE: Steve Miller
DE/DT: Chase Farris
DT: Joel Hale
DT: Michael Bennett

With all the DE/DT offers out there (and the odds being slim of OSU landing anyone additional outside of the aforementioned Bennett and Hale...I think McReynolds ends up at UNC), it would not shock me to see another offer go out to a POWER recruit at camp.

Would you see that next POWER recruit offer possibly going to Donovan Clark?

I really want to say yes but there are some other guys I really like as well:

Justin Murray from Sycamore (might be a tweener)
Jack Miller from St. John's
Joel Heath from Mount Healthy
Brian Mihalik from Avon Lake
Chase Hounshell from Lake Catholic
Chris Rock from DeSales
Jesse Hayes from Moeller
Andre Sturdivant from Glenville (might be more of a BIG SPEED)

Ryan Kelly would be on the list but I think the staff has definitely passed at this point. I especially like the versatility of guys like Miller and Hounshell...need to see a lot more of several of these guys before I would ever want to venture a guess as to who has the best shot at an OSU offer.

tOSU has approximately, what 22 scholarships available for the 2011 class, if you include the likelihood of a few early departures?

Well that's how many I'll use for my projections then. I am by no means an expert, but heres what I would say is an "optimistic prediction".

QB - Braxton Miller
WR - Shane Wynn
WR - Evan Spencer
WR - One of Phil Dorsett/JaJuan Story/Darius Jennings
TE - Vannett most likely, but maybe Koyack
OL - Brian Bobek
OL - Tommy Brown
OL - Chris Carter
OL - Aundrey Walker
OL/DL - Chase Farris
OL/DL - Antonio Underwood
DL - Steve Miller
DL - Kenny Hayes
DL - Michael Bennet
DL - Joel Hale
LB - Trey Depreist
LB - James Vaughters or Connor Crowell
CB - DerJuan Grambell
CB - Doran Grant
S - Ron Tanner
S - Jeremy Cash
CB/S - one of Jabari Gorman/Wayne Lyons. If not them, then Jamal Aiken.
